  • EDIT: Speyburn 15 DOES STATE that it's non-chill filtered and natural colour. I can't read.
I've got two single malt scotch whiskies from the Speyburn distillery today. I've got the 15 and the 18. I'll taste them both and tell you which one I recommend. Cheers!

Stop with the: “Speyburn 15 is a good bottle.” It’s been my secret weapon for around 8 years now! I need the brand to be obscure so I can buy it cheaply! 😂

Tried 15, and I love its clean, crispy, zest along with the sherry influence over the palate.

Glad you discussed how time spent going back to the bottle can show the change in the whiskey, for better or for worse, if there is any. Because it's a fact that some whiskeys do get worse over time with oxidation and some get better.

I am happy the 15 year is favored. It is the only one available in my area currently. Also, yes, I blame Roy and his only fans account for the 15 year being so sought after.

I knew you'd have a preference for the 15. Not to say your flavor preferences will be anchored there forever.
I have mixed feelings about the 15. the most current session for it was scored a 3.5/5 which is like an 84/100. For a craft presented bottle, I feel like it lacks the oomph and presence to match the abv.

I visited Speyburn not long ago and had both in the tasting, preferring slightly the 18 on account of the more evident spice and herb characters I could pick up.
But I really like the point you make about spending prolonged time with a bottle as opposed to simply having tasted something; it makes for a much more true personal judgement, and this consideration is something that I will endeavour to keep in mind.

    Hey Geoff
I think I prefer the 18 for what the brand offers in general. It's on average 30 euro more where I am but still I feel like it's worth the up pay. Glad you are enjoying the Speyburn 18 so much 😎
Have a great weekend my friend!
    Cheers 🥃🥃

Yeah I definitely think it's well priced and worth it for the 18 year old. Even though I prefer the 15 and its value, I'm sure to replace the 18 year old eventually too. Both are excellent! 🥃

Great comparison. Spot on. I had both of these back to back last week while watching football. Had the 18 first, loved it, and thought I'd try the 15 to compare, thinking it wouldn't measure up. But it did, in its own way. I intend to keep both on hand, but be more sparing with the 18. At $65 vs $140, the 15 is the better value, but life is too short, gimme both. Cheers!

Roy is to blame for my purchase of the 15. 😄I now have both the 15 & 18 and agree that there is a difference. I find the 15 is a little more spirit forward whereas the 18 is rounder and fruitier. Both are really good though. Cheers!

I totally impulse bought a bottle of 15 year old Speyburn a few weeks ago because of Roy and Co. And the price was great too - Diageo sells their NAS whiskies for more sometimes. It states non-chill filtration and no coloring added on the back of the box. I’m with you, weird that they didn’t put it front and center on the label. It’s also strange to me that the Speyburn 10 y.o. so bleak and uneventful compare to its older siblings.

Hey, be careful about bashing the 10yo. 😄 Speyburn has a 10 year old TRAVEL RETAIL offering that is bottled at 46% (the regular stuff is 40) and it is stated as non-chill filtered. And it's cheap. And it comes in a liter bottle. Way better than the regular 10.

I haven’t tried these yet, but the 15 is definitely on my shopping list. A craft presented whisky with an age statement and a decent price tag is such a rarity nowadays. Speaking of age statements, have you noticed that Glenmorangie has released a 16 yo version of the Nectar d’or. This one’s called just Nectar and it’s bottled at 46% ABV. In Europe you can get a bottle under 80€. It’s propably chill filtered, but still I think it ticks suprisingly many boxes. For Glenmorangie that is ;)

That brand is sold as "Nantou" here, from the TTL distillery. I've actually looked at it before on the channel and I enjoyed it. Although the bottle is different, it's my understanding that it's in fact the same release. 🥃

Great review, Geoff. Ive replaced the 15 already. Can't beat the price for the age where I am. I have a sample of the 18 that I've been saving for my own side by side Speyface...burn...off to justify buying a bottle to my wife. Spoiler alert, I'm going to like it and my purchace will be completely logical. Come to think of it, I might keep hyping it up to give her the idea to buy it for me for Valentine's Day. It's got a red label after all. Good talk, Geoff. You convinced me that my wife will hopefully buy this bottle for me for Valentine's Day, you cupid in disguise. 💘 Woof. Between the two I favor the 18 because the 15 (at least the bottle I got) drinks fairly hot. Also I’d take the Edradour 12 or the Signatory Edradour 10 over either of these every time…..Edradour is kinda my jam when it comes to Sherry matured scotch.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2
