After your Review 410 - Speyburn 10 YO, I bought the only 5 available in the entire market. Nobody in my circle of malt friends had even heard of it. All in dusty tin tubes and at a discounted price of GBP 30 then (GBP 20 today). Gifted two and guess what? The cork on three of those five bottles crumbled! It was delightfully light but loaded with flavour. I have a diminishing one-and-a-half 18 YOs now, 700 ml @ 46% and enjoy them on a summer evening, sitting under a fan.

Nice review. I've always enjoyed Speyburn and I keep a bottle or two in my bar. I like their Companion Cask series. A nice dram at 46%, non-chill filtered and no coloring. It is very enjoyable and a very good value at its price point. Along with Loch Lomond 12, one of my go-to drams when I'm enjoying a quiet evening at home. Keep the top-shelf around for special occasions and the basic stuff for friends that aren't too familiar with Scotch. Cheers.

I do love Speyburn. I haven't been able to find the 15 year old near me in the US. However, I recently purchased a 12 year old cask strength single cask from SMWS called "Big, Complex, and Impressive" (88.28). It's lovely!

That would mean producing more "dirty" stuff - which counteracts their current signature.
The question is where the money is: How much growth is there in Single Malt? - not much in my personal bank account, I'm afraid. Or is it still possible to chug along without much rishk by simply selling to blending brands ...

    • @MrLachlanmackenzie
      @MrLachlanmackenzie ปีที่แล้ว

@@pfalzgraf7527 - It's possible that minor changes might be enough like not clarifying - but it requires a review by a professional and some sense that it's needed because they want to aim higher. My impression is that blends (and those providing filler) are always going to take a hit when things get tough especially when the product you have has nothing distinctive to bring to the table when it goes into the mix. Will the single malt market be a better bet? Arguably the enthusiasts market is always going to be more robust than others, but yes it might only go so far.

@@MrLachlanmackenzie i find speyburn 10 to be the best whisky in the sub 30€ category. By far.
If the price and quality were to increase, it would be in competition with the arrans 10 and deanstons 12 and many others and would be invisible.

Maybe 8-10 years ago I bought the 10 and it was not a malt light on flavor at all. It was back when they were still using metal tins. It was the most puckering sour and bitter citrus forward malt I have ever had. Such a strong flavor profile, I was shocked. Bitter Orange, Sour Lemon and a kick of lime at the end that lingers a long time. A very interesting malt but the kind that you have 1 dram and leave it for over 1 month. It took me a long time to finish that bottle.
In 2022 I did buy the 15 mainly because of Roy and yes it is much like Ralfy says it is. I do find it interesting how crazy citrus forward the 10 was that I had all these years ago. It was not just me, I let a friend try it as well. That bottle was a citrus bomb. I am guessing the 10 is no longer like that.

Diagio just bought one of my favorite Texas Distilleries,, Balcones. A friend did a recent tour and asked if there were going to be any changes and they guide said it was just for distribution. But also they were changing the Texas Rye mashbill which is one of our personal favorites and moving from blue to yellow corn which is most of the rest of their mashbills. I'm stocking up on some of my favorites from them after hearing that.

    • @welshtoro3256

Thanks for the heads up my friend. I'm one of the teeny amount of folk that's been buying Balcones since the Chip Tate days. Blue corn is a signature of that distillery. I just opened a 2017 Blue Corn Bourbon cask strength that I was sitting on. Baby Blue and Brimstone are Blue corn too. I think they will stick to it. Interesting about the rye. I have to confess to not being a fan of that (we're all different) and maybe the yellow will work or maybe the results will be the same but cheaper. I have a lot of faith in Jarred and I don't think he will let Diageo run down the company. WT

Funny, opened this one a few days ago and would score it higher. I usually don't like very sweet drams but this one I like. I did get the impression on the neck pour that it's rather easy drinking, not something you'll dissect over the course of hours, but probably a good starting dram or a dram when you want a dessert whisky. The gingeryness and spicyness absolutely save this whisky because otherwise it would be really too simple and too sweet.

Ralfy said that he’s awarding lower malt marks from this year onwards I think because he’s anticipating a general rise in standards from integrity malts… so a Laga 16 that might’ve been a 90 needs to drop down to 80-85 so that Port Charlotte can blow it out of the water.
      I think.

Old bottle is worse in general according to most online reviews but you can always try the new bottling and see if you like it better or not comparing to the ones with old label. Usually have significant difference whenever they change the label.

I wonder Speyburn 10 (not 15) could be considered a good entry-level SM like GF12, GL12 or GM10. The price certainly is much better than those three.
Good to hear about birch. I also home-age some NGS myself, so at least I know birch is usable. Ralfy, if you haven't already I suggest you consider trying out red oak for your project. When toasted, it smells like cat pee (something I'm sure you know about) but the flavor is pretty good. Just can't make a cask out of it because it's too porous to hold liquor. Specifically I think what I have is Quercus rubra, but I suppose it could instead be Quercus falcata. Bought an unfinished piece at my local home improvement center, I can't find which one it really is. Considering where I live, it could go either way.

Not a criticism (necessarily) but this is the most significant disparity between a largely favorable review and an underwhelming malt mark that I can remember. Is this the lowest mark ever for an "integrity bottling" at 46 proof, no color, no chill filter? For the record, this is $65 US in Virginia USA.

  • @miserablerhurensohn

I took a chance on this 15 a few years ago knowing nothing about it except what was on the label - 15 years, 46% ABV, non chill filtered, no color added and at a price that seemed really cheap, $47. I went back the next day for a few more.
