    What are some really great castle guard minis I can print for this thing? Need some really good archers to go with the Asgard Rising soldiers!
    Also, if you like these videos and the value they bring show us some support over on Patreon where you can join the exclusive discord server! www.patreon.com/realterrainhobbies

      Reaper's Anhurians look like they'd work well for you. The designs of your printed guards look like they'd match the Anhurians pretty well and you can go with either bows or crossbows or a mix of them. I've been using the metal ones for an army (With their bones black cavalry rather than the metal). A slow process, but it's a fun one to do with the designs.
      I'm also kind of surprised that Shad hasn't shown up to scream about Crenelations...

      Fireforge Games sell a line of Russian Infantry that would fit the time period of your castle well. Good Eastern European/Slavic minis are hard to find so I'm excited to see what people suggest.
      The Baron's War models from Footsore Miniatures would look right at home too!

    In the future, you can go to a flooring store and get some empty cardboard rolls (for the castle towers) that the carpet or linoleum come on. Home Depot is another choice, but flooring stores have them more often. This is what I used for my castles. The cardboard is super thick and strong and just about perfectly round. You can also glue and brad nail wood inside of it.

    • @MyklCarlton
      @MyklCarlton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As long as those rolls are exactly the right diameter for re-creating the building. They're certainly useful for scratch building.

    • @wishcloudstudios
      @wishcloudstudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@MyklCarlton You could also visit wood shops for smaller diameter rolls. They use them to transport very thin decorative trim and wood veneer.

    • @MyklCarlton
      @MyklCarlton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wishcloudstudios Indeed! However, consider how many places you may need to visit before you (might) find the exact diameter roll for this one build, compared to how long it takes to simply cut one to size as Neil has done.
      Again - discarded materials are excellent, but sometimes it's far more sensible and efficient to make one yourself. This is one of those cases.

    • @wishcloudstudios
      @wishcloudstudios 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@MyklCarlton A simple phone call might work to find them. And the thick cardboard (it's almost MDF) is much more durable than a piece of bent cardboard box. I'm just throwing ideas out there.
      I hate having builds that fall apart on me, and I hate things that aren't symmetrical (which usually happens when I try to bend cardboard) I am very rough with my creations, and they need to last. I am happy to run around a little if the end result is going to be better.

    There was a couple of these Wenceslauses of Bohemia so not sure if this is the one, but one of them died a spectacular death. Castles back then had 'hanging' toilets extruded from the outer walls and the poo would just fall down the wall. So he went to the 'throne' one day and got stabbed through the arse by a killer that climbed the wall and waited under the toilet. True story. History is wonderful 😂

    • @RealTerrainHobbies

    • @MyklCarlton
      @MyklCarlton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The KCD Wencelaus was Wenceslaus iv. You're talking about King Wenceslaus iii. The place of his assassination within the castle at Olomouc in 1306 is debated, and the manner of his death is generally agreed to have been three sword blows to the chest, either while he was walking in the gardens or on his bed. The toilet story, though entertaining, is a later modification of the story. You'll probably find some interesting material if you search for 'garderobe' instead of 'toilet'. Wikipedia credits the garderobe story to Charles Edmund Maurice, The Story of Bohemia from the Earliest Times to the Fall of National Independence in 1620 (1896), p.117

      @@alexthompson3447 Indeed! There are some leaders who died 'on the throne', but sadly not so spectacularly. It does sound like something that a clever assassin would do if given the chance, but I suspect most bare bottoms look alike.

    I love that you work big projects and do not just bow down to the TH-cam gods and force yourself to do weekly tiny build videos. In fact, I prefer the gradual release of these types of videos - having weekly videos gets me feeling overwhelmed and makes me feel bad about my own projects, just gives me this "so much to watch, so much to build, I can't do it, I give up" feeling. So please keep up these big builds. You will be the envy of the crafters who have succumbed to the weekly video grind - I know because many of them say in their own videos how they regret not having time to do the bigger stuff. So rock on! I love this.

    Fun part is that the castle this model is build on, is a mid sized castle at best, there were build a lot of bigger castle complexes between the 900 and 1700. Some are fortified and others are not, but some of the biggest are fortified.
    Where I live we have a fort and in a town a few miles away there is even a much bigger fort that could contain a small city.
    When playing computer games and having fun with roleplaying most get the size of such castle very wrong. Unless they were a small fortified castle, such things used to be huge and contain several functions sometimes inside the outer walls and at other times outside the castle walls there would be supporting buildings like a stable, a blacksmith and several others. And usually the games get it all wrong and make the castle it's self way to small.
    A castle would have a main hall. This is were they would eat and meat. Also this is were your men sleep if the castle or fort is of the smaller type. Going up in size there would be storage rooms, a kitchen, bedrooms (the lords, his servants and for guests at least). With more money and power the castle would be bigger and then there would be a small chapel or church, more bedrooms, a library (that came later) and a lot more.
    The fort where I live is from before 1600 and has been upgraded a few times, outside the walls there is the old part of the city that's fortified and we are rather proud of that fact even if most don't know way it was that way. Inside the fort you had the lord or captains home, the proviant storage, the wellhouse, underground rooms to act as barracks enough to hold around 200 people, a well protected gate and it was built to handle cannon fire. This was a small provincial fort built to protect a city.
    The fort closer to the border that was built around the same time is way bigger and I just wish game designers could get the sizes of such places in their games right, they were usually huge and covered an easy to defend place with good coverage.
    It's cool to see you basing your model on an actual castle or fort that has excised and sizes it to fit miniatures, hopefully that will lett people understand how big such place really were. And how small some forts could actually be, because some of them were just a fortified building at a place with a view with two rooms, the main hall and the masters bedroom.
    in games, roleplaying and books they often get stuff like that very wrong and it's annoying to someone like me how lives in a place that has buildings still standing that's older than dirt and was build between 1620 to 1690 or there about. That's 400 years ago... And they used hand tools to build stuff that big, oh dang.
    Then there the even older buildings in this country that's still standing looking just like they did a frigging 1000 years ago, it's insane. And how they figured out how to make to wood last that long is nearly unbelievable, they prepped the trees over years to flood them with sap, and when that started to dry it made the wood resistant to rot like you wouldn't believe.

  • @petermarton3743
    @petermarton3743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey pal! If you mean to make a historically accurate castle, I recommend you to cover it with plaster. Our ancestors covered their castles plaster to hide the underlaying stucture. Even the smaller ones. With that the lord could hide weaker wooden walls. This fact (plaster covered castles) survived in many-many castle names. (Székesfehérvár- The governing white fort, Salgóvár - Bright fort. Gyulafehérvár- The white castle of Gyula ). I hope this helps to drop on more beatiful detail ! :)

    This is going to be amazing. I'm very interested in how you extracted the model data from the game.
    Also, you might find Guedelon Castle interesting. A brand new castle in France built using 13th century tools and tech. Started in 1997 and still under construction now. The YT channel Absolute History has a 5 part series on it called Secrets of the Castle. For someone as detail oriented as yourself, I think you'd find it fascinating.

    Happy new year bud, looking forward to everything you have in store for us. This project is looking insane and I can't wait for the finish.
    The fact that you've made the template available is also really cool and my fingers are itching to have a go at this, but even just the front half may be a bit of a stretch for my skills, so, we'll see. I have a long-term project to sort out a proper painting and modelling area at home that, hopefully, will become a reality this year, and this looks like a great project to inaugurate it!

    Hello Neill, all the best for 2022. You've mentioned that you wanted some archers to go with your castle, maybe it is an idea to ask MWSculpts to sculpt some for you? This is a TH-cam channel which let you see how one can sculpt Fantasy/DnD style characters. I like his channel and I certainly think it could use more views, in my opinion (just for the record, it is not my channel, but I am a Patron of that channel)
