  • We had a 2011 VW jetta tdi in the shop today for struts, shocks, and an oil change. The car was dropped off for a suspension and turning noise which was caused by the left front spring breaking.

There’s a special socket spreader bit that opens that strut pinch collar without removing the whole knuckle.

Another great video even if I will probably never own a VW it shows how planning a repair is just as important as the repair itself!

Those era of Volkswagens are known for breaking front springs. It happens here in Europe too

Very nice walk through. 1999-2006 is very similar and very much a pain as well.

They really weren't that bad once i got out of the mindset that they were going to suck. It's a lot to take apart but really wasn't that bad.

Same thing happened on the left front of our 06 Town & Country. Ended up cutting the coil with the torch to get it out.

I used to forget the blocker I'd put in my TDI in the winter, the cooling fan would run, reminding me. Without blocker the fan never ran unless the AC was turned on.

Those CV bolts are single-use only. As are some of the brake caliper bolts.

Typically don't need to drop the entire knuckle, you don't have room to get a chisel on the strut cup, there are special VAG strut spreaders that you put in the slot and turn 90 deg with ratchet or bar to open up the gap - I made one from a cheap 10mm allen bit I just grinded down the sides evenly to look like a flatblade screwdriver. With removal of tie-rod ball joint you need alignment, but always best to get alignment because of the control arm out of knuckle and probably just replace the sway bar links , those are relatively inexpensive. Good video, wow I can't believe how frequent those strut springs are snapping on these VWs??? Bad steel or something?

Good job. I’ve never seen a strut break like that. Plenty of leaking shocks though

      Not all that uncommon.

It is very common on mk5
I have seen Mk5 golf snap front springs under hard braking at only 50,000....
And that was when it was only 6 years old. ...

Did you ask what they hit/run over to break the spring like that?

Supposedly we do not like loud Diesel engines.. I am not sure who they surveyed to find that out.. but it wasn’t me.. I have a straight pipe on my Detroit, and love the sound..

Were any of those fasteners one time use only?

2011 Jetta in the United States was a pile of junk. That was the first year that they decided to make it cheaper. The same year Golf was much better built. Although they still fall apart like all Volkswagens

Not really. This engine isn't the only one. VW took it on the chin. Still, swipe your finger on the inside of the tailpipe. Have a look. Do it again on the outside. Yes, the inside is cleaner. There you go.

Talk about terrible engineering and a bad design!! Having to remove the lower control arm to drop the spring out just to get access to the bottom bolt to change shocks!! There a wear item and designed to be replaced!! Why make it that hard??

    • @fastinradfordable
      @fastinradfordable 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s really not that hard on this model.
There is a tool to open the steering knuckle.
There is ZERO need to pull the control arm and axle.
This is what happens when you try to specialize in everything...
      You can’t.
So you get people who get the job done often without knowing what the correct way to do it was.
You should NOT chisel the spindle open.
