A long time ago, I read an article about some city slickers turned rural farmers who were overwhelmed with all the manure their animals were pumping out. A suburban friend came to visit them in her Mercedes, and saw the large piles and asked if she could take some for her town garden. When farm girl gladly said, "Take all you want!" her friend proceeded to greedily shovel the poo into the trunk of her Mercedes cackling, "It's like gold, gold I tell you!" Lol, I love that story!

Excellent video and love love the garden!! I am always so thrilled to see people GET this BTE method and then reap the benefits....The wonderful and exciting bonus for you is..in 5, 6, plus years your garden will still be producing and creating a rich organic sustainable soil that will provide strong healthy plants...year after year after year!
I was just filming YEt another update because I Swear within a week the garden grew another 4 feet!! And while I was walking and talking reminded people who are new..USe the compost..TAKE the manure...it is all good and it all aides in adding to that soil!!
We have people every now and then believe all they need to do is throw out some wood chips...and poof! so good call with explaining that....I also love it that your down south..a completely different climate then up here where technically WE have a shorter growing season and lots of weather extremes from the mountains!. so to compare our gardens w ith the same method is really COOL!!!
Great job and the garden is looking lovely.!!!!!:)) Oh and Mr H loves the finger snapping!!! snap snap..pretty soon I can see him doing that...hahaha...

Oh, you're gonna be canning like mad very soon! Thank you for all you do and the great input! xo
P.S. You tell Mr. H I'd pay cash to see him do the "snap snap" with his fingers. Haha! xoxoxo

Dogwood Hollow Homestead I'm not either of them but I can attest that outside of the initial watering you'll want to give seedlings and transplants, we didn't water one time and East TN where I'm from had a harsh drought. Didn't bother my garden one bit!

While it's great to think and plan ahead sometimes, how can you ever really enjoy this moment if you're off in some distant future all the time? Just keep it simple guys. Throw out wood chips, build compost piles, and let nature do it's thing so you have very nice soil to plant into when the time comes. If you have to, buy it in the beginning and build off that each year as you make more of your own. Yes, it takes time but remember to enjoy this moment and don't stress out over next year's garden plans. Plants don't do that, they simply exist, and they grow just fine. You too should be like a plant. Patient, and you will grow with what you are given. :)

I am still doing baby steps. Although I told my teen son that maybe next year we will get some rabbits. Depends on how we do with the chickens. I know I have to do things kind of slow or I will overwhelm myself and everything will totally fail. This year is my chickens and a smallish garden. And today I got my first produce from it, one hot Hungarian pepper and two super chili peppers. I was so happy.

I know I am late with my response, but here it goes! Love the video and especially love your lifestyle. Starry is great and to be honest, I watch both of your videos. I get wonderful ideas from you and Starry. I live in the suburbs and am starting where I can....my back yard. I am learning so much and have you to thank. We just tilled up our 20 x 20 spot ( not more than I can chew) and cannot wait until spring. I have canned my whole adult life and before my divorce I had a huge garden. I was broken hearted that I could not can this year. Farmers market prices in my area were higher than the grocery store. I have been finishing up on my prior canned goods and will be starting fresh next spring. Please keep the videos coming and I will be sure to watch!

Thank you for keeping it real. I love, love, love Starry! She is the one that got me interested in homesteading. I was just looking for a better way to garden when I stumbled across her channel. Then from her, I learned about your channel. I have learned so much from both of you. Thanks to both of you, I now have a BTE garden and chickens (in the city) and am now looking for 10+ acres in the country so I can really start to homestead. My husband has helped me a lot with all of my homesteading projects. However, he said he is going to block homesteading channels from my TH-cam, because I keep getting too many ideas, which means more work for him.....hehehehehe :)

I'm a new subscriber, I'm watch all your videos. You are a realist and so fun to watch. (Bare with me this a bit long) we've talk to a few friends about what we want to do, a small farm, I already do a lot of things from scratch (in the city and eat clean). One friend is a great Gardner he's going to help us built our garden, another friend is the construction business and he's going building a coop for us. So you said learn a skill while in city and my goal is to learn how to sew and canning while we live in the city. So for canning I went and bough all the stuff for canning, should I use a pressure canned cooker or a regular canning pot. My husband will not quit his job, but I'm a stay at home mom, all I want is chicken to have eggs for us, a garden for our food, And learn how to hem for us. I can Bake some pretty awesome cakes already and make greeting cards I sell from time to time. I've been doing hydroponic indoor gardening and I've produce basil for pesto and use cilantro a lot. We want to buy a small farm in Kentucky but not too far from the city because I don't want to overwhelm myself, farms I've look are about 20-30 miles away from the city. Any tips for me? Oh yeah I'm slowly buying and preparing for our Farm, buying books, looking at lot of TH-cam video and even bought some stuff for soap making(this will happen way down the road once I can master canning and sewing)

I wasn't sure how long it would take. I was under the impression that I was just going to have to get some woodchips and leave it for about a month.
Thank you for enlightening me. I don't actually has garden space here in the UK. I was going to hire an allotment space and start the garden there.

I live in Phoenix and am from Tennessee/Mississippi. I've been farming/gardening all my life, but Arizona farming/gardening is a whole nother thing! I am almost 1 year into the Back to Eden Gardening. We ( my husband Dr. B and I) have two 1/3 acres ( one is where the house is). Thus far, the Back to Eden technique is working well. I don't have a lot of muscle so its been a while for me to get the woodchips spread, but I am so happy I switched. PS I love Starry Hildre too! Ya'll my girls!

Yeah I always put the straw or pine shavings from my chicken coop cleanup into the area I will be using for my garden the following year. Does great. Any leftover material goes into the compost pile. Also, a great way to start a garden area for next year... get a tarp and stake it to the ground for three days. Kills all the grass. Then cover it with card board or newspaper when you remove the tarp. Next throw the chicken coop cleanout material on top. By next year you will have a great start to a new garden bed.

Hey Patara! This is an awesome video, thanks so much! I have a couple of questions, 1) You said you built the ground 2ft, would you put would panels around the entire garden area or dig two feet in and refill it? 2) So after the 9 month period would you jump strait into planting? 3) Is it ok if I let my chickens into the garden while it's the 9 month period and when the plants are in? 4) How much space do you give to your garden?
Thanks so much for your help Patara! Your videos are the best, and I love that you include God and you include basic truths. Keep up the good work and I wish you the best of luck this winter!

For non believers of the Back to Eden method you have to see for yourself. I put newspaper/cardboard with leaves/grass clippings and manure on my garden for years. Last year I let the one garden go fallow and for the first time I have worms!! The garden has done great this year. I am looking forward to the leave falling again! Try a small section at a time if the "whole" garden seems to overwhelming. Give it a try!

Of course there are people who simply don't care about the land, resources or the beauty in gardening so they will do everything to rush it and get poor results. If you want high quality food, HEALTHY food, put some real time and love into it. It shows in your plants health and the health benefits that you reap from it.

I am in NC also! I started a garden this year but we are planning to do a BTE plot for next year. Any advice? Can we use all these pine needles we have? Either in place of the wood chips or in addition to? Any sites or channels that would be of particular help for a newbie?

    • @Iloveorganicgardening
      @Iloveorganicgardening 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, pine needles break down pretty quick.I have seen a lot of people start their plots by putting down layers of organic matter and then put the wood chips on top. That way there is organic matter breaking down faster than the wood chips will....so you can plant right away. Have you seen this? They call it the lasagna method.

Please tell me how you put the breaks on crabgrass! Last year I tried a small area in my garden, about 20 x 20, putting down cardboard then layers of organic matter, compost and wood chips. It didn't take the crabgrass more than two weeks to have the entire area tied in knots with runners. There has to be an organic, natural way to put an end to this nightmare!

Greetingz from Michigan! Love your videoz, i need all the advice and extra ideaz i can get; and then some in these timez that seem to be just like what is written in the good book, the "end" chapter...love your accent; you are so cute and i like the way you think. Never change! Your perfect just the way you are. Been doing lotsa prepping and when you mentioned the 8mm clear plastic, i digress to say i just bought a lot of it but i got the 10mm and got the gorilla clear duct tape so if thingz get bad i will out the plastic over all the windows and doors in case Putin does the unthinkable...the "n" word...i dont even want to say that word but this is the reason i got the clear plastic to keep radiation outside if by the Grace of God we survive it, plus got that flex steel stuff to fill in any place toxic air could get in that might have fallout in it. Stocking up on as much fire wood too just in case, for the next winter because if something happens and we couldnt use the furnace we can use the old wood stove we have down in the basement so we wont freeze; it gets so dang brutally cold here in the late fall and the whole winter and sometimes even in the spring time in BrRrRrRr City Michigan. Well take care and keep kicking out the new videos. May God walk with you during these difficult times and keep you and your family safe under His protective wings.

Hi Patara! I’m looking back at this video as I’m planning to use my cattle panel arch for beans this year as well as my cukes...I was hoping you had an idea of how far apart you spaced your bean plants? Thanks!

I live in C. FL. and found a boarding place for horses. They use wood shavings for mulch and ground cover and in the stalls. I ask if I could have manure/wood shavings from the stalls ..FREE... and I also found out where they order in wood chips by the truck load which I haven't the ability to get it by the truck load yet, but found at a local feed store I can buy huge big plastic bags of wood chicks, sawdust, or wood shavings for about $6. a bag. Not as cheap as the truck load, but still better than little bags. I just mention this as possible resources that some people may not think about.

ohh thank God--I found a local tree trim co for county parked and a filling station and asked those guys to dump what they had in my field--and wow--they took my address and I got a huge big pile of nice smelling pine mulch FREE!!!--so call your electric comp and ask them to sign you up.

Good call on Starry - she is so authentic :-) Patara, after the 9 months of baking the hay/straw/manure/wood chips, and you pulled back the black plastic, what did you have, soil (more or less) ready to plant?
