I love my back to Eden garden here in Indiana. I planted 6 cucumber plants this year and harvested over 1000 cucumbers. We have so many pickles I'm set for a long time. What's even more fun is giving food away with neighbors and family. We also have bushels and bushels of tomatoes, green beans, cantaloupes, squash, green beans and more. Its a great method.

If you peel your tomato before canning, save the peel and dehydrate them, crush in a grinder and use as tomato powder to flavor and thicken stuff! Very flavorful and nutritious.

The flowering tips of the Basel can be cut off about six inches long and used in canned tomatoes, just poke the six inch long stem into the jar of quartered tomatoes along with onion, bell peppers etc.

Nice trellis system. I would recommend moving your tomato plants closer together to about a foot apart. Run a single leader up the panel. This gives you less fruit per plant but allows more plants per sq foot which ultimately gives you more fruit. It also gives you a cleaner look by pruning most of your leaves off the vine which helps with mildew and keeps the plants healthier.

Produce looks great. I did laugh as you mentioned cucumbers are nearly done, I picked my first one yesterday! In the Uk we had such a wet spring, early summer the slugs ate all my zinnias twice & devoured veg seedlings as they popped up, it's going to be a lean winter on homegrown goodies such as beetroot & carrots. Sigh...

Great looking stuff. We pluck the sucker leaves and grow a single stem up a stake or string for both cucumbers and tomatoes.
Less green sucking energy from the plant = more fruit. It also allows to have plants closer together. Check out I am NJ Organic, he has a load of info on BTE garden and the science of it. Cheers!!

Beautiful garden and great video. You said you wanted to pull the mulch back and add more compost next year? I try not to do that in my garden because it disturbs the fungal and bacterial activity in the soil. I just add my layers on top, like when I add compost, then cover with a thin layer of wood chips. Just a suggestion, not that you need any, your gardens are healthy, productive and beautiful. Grea job!

My husband and I have put up six of them so far this year in conjunction with the wood chips and my own compost things are just 'exploding' haha, I just adore BTE method and you are right that it is work, however, nothing compared to the work involved with traditional gardening !! I am a new subscriber and enjoyed your video today, btw, what is the name of the sunflower you are growing at the end of the video? I love the smaller sunflowers like that, but, not sure of the variety, I want to plan on growing them for next year. Thank you and happy gardening !!!!!

Patara, do you trim to keep your tomatoes from getting tall? I don't and mine have got to be at least 10 ft tall. Wonder if Old Fred or Ms Homestead Lady have any suggestions. I've seen pictures of mawmaw's and pawpaw's standing on ladders picking and always wondered what they used to keep them up right. Cedar poles?!? Do you know? Could you ask and see if they know? Thanks for sharing your journey
