  • In 2011, we produced and directed Back to Eden Film, a documentary feature about master gardener Paul Gautschi's incredible regenerative organic food growing system. The film went viral gaining millions of views globally and igniting a food-growing movement known as Back to Eden Gardening. We invite you to watch the raw footage from behind the scenes of making the Back to Eden Film. Stored safely for over a decade these videos have never been shared until now. During the making of the Back to Eden Film, we documented Paul daily in his gardens and orchards for a year. Paul became a close friend and mentor to us. He patiently shared his unique knowledge of growing food and his gifted ability to witness the details of God's design in creation. Paul's deep faith, generous character, and contagious enthusiasm continue to impact our lives and the lives of millions of people worldwide who witness his story. Please enjoy watching behind-the-scenes clips from the making of the documentary. We hope you get inspired to grow the best-tasting food on earth and join the Back to Eden Gardening movement!
    Sincerely,
    Dana Richardson & Sarah Zentz

    I'm grateful to Paul for his gardening wisdom. But more so, his demonstration of how practical scripture and creation really are in every area of life. Blessings, Paul. Thank you for pointing us back to the Lord for all of the answers.

    You share God's truth. God told me to garden when i was afraid of what God would do to me and the world with world wide COVID hoopla. I didn't want to garden, but it seemed that God wanted me to garden. I was pretty confused, but I started watching videos and God sent me your documentary. He opened my ears wide when you said that you were at a loss. You were convicted that you came up short in knowledge and power and were sure to fail if you did what you knew to do.
    Paul, God made my humbled ears to hear your testimony of walking with Him and when in need... seek, ask, knock... and your faith that all who seek find, and knock find, and ask are given...
    I was likewise convicted that I and the world were coming up quite short. He said just get up early and get to it and I did what you did I trusted God to guide me. I also got woodchips and seeds, etc. I have had problem after problem in the garden, but God has seen me through everything and blessed me with soooo much more faith. 2 years God has instructed me in the garden. I listen to scripture while I work. At this time know of no fear of sickness or constraints I am presently healthy with fresh air and abundant fresh food, I appreciate this time, but I don't fear the loss of any of it. God gives and God takes away according to His good pleasure and He causes His very goid seed to grow in me. That seed contains everything and needs nothing and it grows! Because His seed (Jesus) is in me and He provides cover for me as I abide in Him I grow in trust that He will see me through every firery trial. He knows all that are His.
    God gave us His word and we do well to walk in it, as it says. Jesus made the earth and it is good. Trying with all of your heart to imitate your maker is being His deciple.
    I loved how you have been instructed about our labors in the garden. Adam and Eve turned away from God's way to follow thier own hearts and did what was right in their eyes. They had the Most High as their king and all flesh is in rebellion to this day.They are the mother and father of flesh. The garden is the world and all flesh wants to follow after our own ideas and according to that curse, we labor/suffer. When we have labored enough in the heat we know that He is like water in the desert, He is what is needed. His way leads to blessings and rest.
    I had heard/read all of those things, but in the garden I am instructed and blessed with blessing better then gold.
    Forgive my many words I have wanted to say thank you for a long time now. Also, I thank the film makers for capturing it all and giving freely. So, many know God so that blessings of Him pour forth from hearts always.

    I just want to add that one of the many amazing things that Paul has said is to make friends with the tree trimming guy that has a chipper machine. That chipper waste is the stuff you want! So when I heard the chipper machine in our neighborhood I asked the guy to dump it on my driveway and I gave him a nice tip :-) I put up to 8 in in some areas, after the fall rains now six months later I'd say I have almost an inch a good soil now in those areas. It's really about community, make friends with that guy:-) thank you thank you to all of you!

    I am so grateful for Paul's teachings about God and the garden. I felt so motivated after watching Back to Eden, not only to get wood chips, but also spiritually. I appreciate how Paul has allowed God to speak to him personally and through the scriptures, and that Paul is sharing what God has shown him.. What kind of wood chips are best for the garden - cedar, cypress, pine, oak? Thank you for helping point us in the right direction about this.

    • @BacktoEdenGardening
      @BacktoEdenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind words. I agree Back to Eden Gardening is more than just growing food, it's a lifestyle. Growing food and connecting to God and creation is so healing on so many levels.
      In answer to what kind of wood chips to use: Finely chipped branches with leaves is the best. The variety of tree is less important.
      Paul uses all sorts of mixtures of everything from soft wood evergreens, cedar to hardwood and brush from his local tree trimming services. Using a mixture of tree species combined can actually be really beneficial in terms of nutrients and decomposition rates. Whatever is going to compost and break down easily is good. The only thing to stay away from for sure is Black Walnut. My favorite is hardwood trees which is any tree with broad leaves instead of needles. But it all works amazingly!

    Even desert can be made furtile. The Israelis did it, and the Chinese turned desert into a forest. In Israel they grew rows of trees that normally grow in the desert, and under the canopy of those trees they grew plants that would normally not grow in the desert.

    I am wondering how to reasonably plant garlic and other row-type crops in deep wood chips (beets, carrots, radishes, etc.) especially in large quantities. Opening up a spot to plant one tomato plant, then digging even more to get it into dirt (without mixing the dirt and wood chips), and getting the wood chips to stay up away isn’t easy. Doing that for a whole row - or multiple rows - of deep wood chips seems nearly impossible. I have been using wood chips for years now, but I still have some practical issues I haven’t worked out.

    • @BacktoEdenGardening
      @BacktoEdenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a wonderful question. I have also been experimenting and researching the best solutions to no-till row planting in Back to Eden wood chip gardens and farms. For larger scale no-till wood chip growing systems advances in tractors and machines are being made to effectively scrap the row clean and deposit the crop seed in the soil. For no-tillers, "the planter" is the most crucial piece of equipment on their farm. It does the job of opening a slit in the soil, dropping in seed and closing the seed trench, all while managing residue efficiently in the field. However, on the scale of a garden, Mark McOmber developed a neat DIY trick for prow planting. He generously rakes back the wood chips from a row and then places a half cut PBC pipe on the row, plants the seeds in the soil and then places the pipe over his row to protect the mulch from falling in. He then can dump the mulch back on and it creates a clean row, falling off the pipe. I think more research and experimentation is needed here. I'll keep in touch.

    In following your advice to use arbor mulch, I asked our tree trimmer to chop up the large limbs he cleaned up from my sycamore tree. The mulch was very very thick in large pieces, however and I spread it on one cleared out lawn about 5 inches deep. I worry it will never break down, as one year later it looks the same. Any thoughts on what I can do to promote the process? Is it hopeless?

    • @BacktoEdenGardening
      @BacktoEdenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Watering is good advice. Water helps a lot. But it also needs nitrogen. After it eats up all the leaf matter. Add organic manure on top. Add fresh green chipped leaves. Or rake the massive chips off, make a pile for them to compost and add a finer chip!

    Can I use corn husks for layering..will they break down in a year?

    • @BacktoEdenGardening
      @BacktoEdenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use any organic matter as a covering. Any organic mulch will almost all provide certain benefits including improved moisture retention, weed suppression, improved soil microbe activity, softer top soil. However, the unique thing about arborist wood chips is the nutrient composition containing nitrogen in the leaves, carbon in the branches. This is what helps create an ideal composting ratio that really causes soil fertility to improve and especially positively impacts vegetable growth and seedlings.

    • @BacktoEdenGardening
      @BacktoEdenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      PS So my advice is to shred or chip or compost the corn husks and add a nitrogen source like green leaves or organic manure.

    I would love to get Paul’s thoughts on the below passage of scripture. I have several young apple and pear trees (completely surrounded by wood chips of course!) and feel like I should follow this teaching. I am wondering if the fruit should be left on the tree for future fertilization or is this just a exercise in trusting God and obeying God’s word for future blessing? This is something I’ve been wrestling with.
    ““When you enter the land and plant fruit trees, leave the fruit unharvested for the first three years and consider it forbidden. Do not eat it. In the fourth year the entire crop must be consecrated to the Lord as a celebration of praise. Finally, in the fifth year you may eat the fruit. If you follow this pattern, your harvest will increase. I am the Lord your God.”
    ‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭19:23-25‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    • @BacktoEdenGardening
      @BacktoEdenGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this scripture is open to your own personal interpretation. However, I can tell you that on a practical level that many fruit trees need at least 3 years to bear fruit even and it might be beneficial for the tree to wait to harvest too much early on. Paul does leave the fruit on his mature fruit trees even until it is naturally falling on the ground and then harvests whats fallen. This keeps the tree happy and provides optimal nutrition and flavor in the fruit. Hope this helps a little!
