I think most of us have had thoughts about public school in the trying seasons. I have used k5 videos here and there also, and it has REALLY helped. We follow a traditional academic year because I feel we really need that summer break. We just go at our own pace if it takes a year and a half to finish, that's ok. Abeka is advanced, 1/2 to a full year, in my opinion. They also review quite a bit in each grade level. I'm seriously considering buying the arithmetic 1 videos and only teach the phonics and reading portions. I'm trying my best to streamline our homeschool and just stick to the basics. Hopefully, that helps 🙏
I feel like we are thinking very similarly!! While public school isn’t off the table completely, we are still doing everything we can to make homeschooling work. Interestingly, it’s going unbelievably well with my younger child and I thought it would be him I would have problems with if I were to have any at all. But that’s not the case lol. So anyway, adding in videos is definitely the best option for us too! Especially for subjects you don’t want to teach! Haha and also, yes. The beauty of homeschooling is that you really can go at a different pace. I love that. Thank you for your feedback and encouragement!! I don’t blame you for taking summers off!!
Abeka science and history for first grade is good to teach basic information, but it’s more so “checking off the box” to say you taught science or history. If you need to just read a lesson it’s great, but keep in mind, you can always come back next year and teach science or history (or even Spanish 😉) little kids like yours won’t miss much if you don’t teach them all the things right now. Being honest, I can’t remember what science or history I was taught when I was 5 or 6, so I don’t stress if we don’t get to history today. Everything will be okay, next year your kids will be a year older and things will be a little less crazy! I am also a mom of 3 under the age of 5, so I get it.
That’s exactly what I’ve come to realize!! We have definitely put the additional subjects on hold. It’s what we all need 😅 and you’re right, they’re so little. It’s not going to make a huge difference to start so early… I’d rather wait until they can appreciate the information anyway!! Thank you for that!!
Hii! So Coming from your other videos and coming to this one I think you’re just overwhelmed and you’re just comparing your home to public school. You need to get your mind out of the public school system and start to put homeschool in your mind. Ask yourself Why do you wanna homeschool, what are the reasons why you want a Homeschool and then take those reasons and put it into your Homeschool. you can’t compare your Homeschool with public, I say this to everybody but in a very nice manner!! Lot of times we just focus so much that we make ourselves second guess and question things and then our homeschool will become very tense and overwhelming. so with that being said coming from your past videos you’re adding a lot of subjects, and a lot of curriculum into your daily tasks for kindergarten, And it may seem like to you because you have little ones and their attention spans don’t sit there for a very long time. Now of course if your laws allows it just focus on the main things. For example I’m just focused on ( La which is reading and writing and good citizenship and grammar. ) That is what we are focusing on for kinder level now when we get to first, second and so forth yes I’m gonna start adding more subjects, but at that time, my child will be more mature, and to be able to sit and concentrate and focus more than what she could at a five-year-old. I honestly just think you had way too much going on. You had a lot of subjects which is great no bashing you with that at all. Sometimes states u need all those which then yes you have to set back and make a schedule plan, and try to break it up to make your day not so filled with a lot of work. You’re trying to be the best that you can do and you kind of sound like me where you wanna put everything pitch perfect and you don’t want to fail or have any gaps that’s exactly how I felt but at the end of the day we are homeschooling And we all have our reasons so if that said try not to make it so difficult cut back on some of the curriculum that you’re adding and focus on the main ones and I think your school year will be a lot lighter and not so heavy and not so much pressure And I don’t think you would want to consider public school. You’re considering public school. Now once they older and first grade comes you will see they changed and so did you! They will have a lot more attention span and their focus will be way better then what it’s at now so that will make and help your teaching go more smoothly. I wish you nothing but the best, and hey if you do choose public that is fine as well I know some mamas who have one child on public bc that is just works for the child and then they have two at home and that system works great for them so no matter what just know you are doing the best and it be ok 👍🏻!! You got this and you will not fail ! Good luck and wish you guys the best school year
Thank you so much for this comment! Yes, there is a huge adjustment season of learning how to homeschool without comparing it to public school! I love a structured day, but my kids need and want more of the freedom that homeschool provides, so it actually helps me so much to keep these things in mind. I don’t have to do EVERYTHING. You’re so right!! I really do appreciate this. We have changed a lot in our homeschool since posting this and I’ll be making updated videos very soon 🥰
I had 2 kindergarteners (in public school) so far and I think it's just something about the age that is hard, so maybe someone else being an authority for education would be good. We have only homeschooled for 1 year (1st grade 2 years ago). We did abeka and I LOVED the structure and how thourough it was but I think I should have relaxed a little and let some things go becaue I think it was a little too much for my son. I didn't know any better and if I ever get a chance to homeschool again, I think it would go so much better than that year. As for social aspect of it, I am also not sure. All homeschoolers say they get plenty of socialization but we did it during covid year so we didn't get it. I am also a work at home / stay at home mom and there isn't that much free time for going out... If I were to homeschool again, I might have outsourced some of the schooling to the nanny while I could do some work maybe.
A lot of similarities here! I think you’re right, the age is hard… especially when you have to transform what was just “home” into now a place of learning. I really love the structure of Abeka, but have definitely learned to be flexible when necessary. As far as socialization, I have one child that seems to only care about that and other that doesn’t care at all. So I’m trying to figure out how best to balance it. And like you said, not much time for getting out when you’re working at home and having to also juggle all of the household tasks! It’s a lot. Having a nanny to help out while working would be so beneficial for sure! Thank you for sharing your experience with me and your thoughts!! 🤍🙏🏼
Best wishes for you and your family. May God grant you wisdom to make the best decisions concerning your little ond! 💗🙏
Thank you so much, friend!! 🙏🏼
