    I have a lot of my family worried about me homeschooling, and my kids not getting social interactions. I feel because they are home and in a safe place they will be able to be themselves and not be afraid to ask questions and in public schools they get made fun of or bullied that may interfere with their overall behavior and could withdrawal from being the person they want to be.

    • @gigglezillakids7379

      @ashlisoverbay socialization, or lack there of, seems to be the number one worry when it comes to homeschooling. As you probably saw in this video, there are A TON of ways that homeschoolers can interact with others and socialize. Co-ops, other homeschool kids, parks, church, family members, siblings and the list goes on. And your observation about them feeling empowered to ask questions in a safe environment is spot on! Keep it up!

    After learning the different ways one learns Audio, visual, tactile. I approached studies for myself like this. Watch read or have someone instruct me about a certain subject. Then attempt to do it by hand and repeat it myself. Once I've revisited both until I am good at that I then instruct or teach someone else how. Something about the trial and error helps retain that subject matter. At least for me that practice has helped me become a great learner. I think that approach can benefit anyone as it encompasses all the different ways someone can absorb knowledge in any subject.

    • @straydeviare
      @straydeviare 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found that dissecting and troubleshooting a lesson is what learning is all about. Not just memorizing. In that way you have absorbed the criteria in full rather just repeating something out of a text book. I think in the long run that information is stored and easily accessible. Where some studies from school that I just repeated over and over to memorize has been lost over time.

    • @gigglezillakids7379

      Hi! It really does depend on a few factors. How much time you have to homeschool, your child's learning style, will you supplement with online learning or co-ops, do you want it to be faith-based, Classical, Montessori...and so on. I would start with "why" you want to homeschool and read about the top five types. If your goals don't align with one, research another. Good luck!

    • @gigglezillakids7379
      @gigglezillakids7379  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Lara C Hi Lara! Such a good question. There’s a few ways to determine your child’s learning style.
      1. Observing what the kids like or the types of activities they enjoy.
      2. Ask their teacher for feedback (if they aren’t being homeschooled.)
      3. Or, yes, have them take a test to help you determine their style.
      There’s a really good article on a website called “Hip Homeschool Moms.” They describe each learning style in reference to determining the best homeschool curriculum and even have a short quiz at the end of the article. hiphomeschoolmoms.com/what-is-my-childs-learning-style/
      I’ll add this article to the description as well! Thanks for such an insightful question. 💕

    • @melaniematheson3607
      @melaniematheson3607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @Lara C! For my kids, it just came from observing them in their play and interests. My oldest LOVES listening to books and likes being read to, and can tell you what he’s learned from what he’s heard. So auditory learning is obviously his strong suit. My middle, however, has a harder time paying attention and is more drawn in when doing things with his hands, though can repeat things back that he’s heard pretty well. He’s more hands on then, though I can use some oral teaching as well.
      I hope this helped a bit! It can be tricky but if you feel like something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to switch it up!!

    • @larafiji

      @@melaniematheson3607 Thank you. I can see that my older one has a bit of auditory, hands on and visual. My 2nd one is more hands on and very arty crafty. Do you choose the delivery of the curruculum to suit their learning style? If so are there sites out there we could check out to see if how deliver a certain topic/subject? Like how do I teach maths to my arty hands on child? Or how do i teach her to read? These are some of the things I am thinking of as I prepare for our homeschool journey .

    • @gigglezillakids7379
      @gigglezillakids7379  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The sooner you introduce learning, the better. It's important to build a solid foundation for future learning/homeschooling so at 2 1/2 I would start with the basics. Letters, numbers, colors, and shapes. I posted a video about how to introduce learning and even have a free lesson plan. th-cam.com/video/dazrhQ7zqJU/w-d-xo.html
      I was a nanny for a family who had a 2 year old and she didn't talk very much at first but after teaching her letters, number, shapes, animals, and talking to her all day, her vocab really improved. Good luck, mama! Keep me updated.

  • @larafiji

    I have a question regarding teaching spelling. My 10 year old is a great reader but bad speller. He is spelling according to how he has been taught phonectically which doesn't always come out right in spelling. e.g. he cannot understand why the word 'island' is not pronounced is- land. etc etc. He thinks English is confusing.

    • @melaniematheson3607
      @melaniematheson3607 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my word, he’s right! English is so confusing. Truthfully I haven’t used a spelling curriculum, but I have heard good things about all about spelling from friends. I use a more Charlotte Mason approach using a language arts curriculum called Spelling Wisdom (so I guess that is a curriculum haha). It’s only done once/twice per week, the kid reads a short saying, poem or passage, then copies it down. By carefully reading it, they will pick up the spelling of the words used. You ask them to spell as many words as they can, then ask them one particular harder word as well. But don’t let them guess, you don’t want them to get confused by how they think it’s spelled. If they don’t know, let them look at the word again. The curriculum is from Simply Charlotte Mason. I like it, it’s a very slow and gentle approach.
      I hope this helps, Lara!
