- Some general rules for this challenge: I flip immediately at the start of the fight. In fights where this isn't possible I don't do damage until I'm able to go into 3D. I don't flip back into 2D unless it is necessary. I try not to use items if possible
O' Chunks 0:00 This version of chunks doesn't go into 3D on his own. If you pick him up and then flip he will stay in 3D for the rest of the fight. I will use this strategy to get many other 2D bosses into 3D as well
Fracktail 0:56 is easy enough, Picking up the frackles and jumping back on him is a little annoying but is not too bad once you get used to it
Mimi 3:30 This fight is a little annoying because when Merlee speaks she pulls you into 2D. I accidently placed a bomb while I was in 2D from mashing 1, but I flipped back before it exploded s I'm counting it
Bowser 4:47 Since Bowser is a spiky enemy you can't pick him up and thus can't bring him to 3D. Boomer can't hit him if he blows up in 3D, So the only way to hit him is to use a shell shock or other attack item
Blooper 5:12 it should be possible to ground pound the tentacles in 3D, However their hitbox is so small and i never hit it successfully, So I decided to use 3 attacking items instead
Dimentio 7:36 Luckily Dimentio goes 3D on his own so this was fairly straightforward, just standard thudley strats, although I performed horribly
Francis 9:06 without items is annoying like he usually is. He got KOed by his own meowbomb in this footage which I found pretty funny
Mr L 12:34 also has to be pulled into 3D, he stays in 3D for the rest of the fight
Brobot 13:40 Originally when I did this I was underleveled. since you can't move up or down in space (unless he sucks you in) getting the power ups was rng based. I tried using boomer, which worked but required a ton of healing. So I leveled up to do enough damage without power ups
O'Chunks 2 16:35 Both this and the next version of chunks have an attack that hits you in 3D. You can also Jump on him in this state for easy damage
O'Cabbage 17:13 Since you have cudge for this fight you can spam him and chunks will keep running into it because that's the only attack he can do. I found it pretty funny
King Croacus 17:55 This is probably the hardest boss to do in 3D. Catching him is incredibly awkward, I tried using Barry and Jumping on the other flowers but both were inconsistent and rng dependent
Mimi 2 20:39 also goes into 3D on her own, She rarely goes down low enough to use boomer or cudge and she's protected by her rubees so Thoreau isn't useful. Barry is the best option here
Brobot L-type 22:00 standing between his legs makes it so that all of his attacks miss you, If you find this boss hard you could actually do this, it's probably easier
Bonechill 23:45 Barry does 2 damage to him, you can only reach him when he's breathing ice onto the floor. Throwing an icicle does 4 damage to him, originally I tried only using Thoreau but catching the icicles he shoots out of his barrel thing is pretty hard, so I ended up using Barry for the most part and switching to Thoreau when the ceiling icicles fell as they're easier to grab and hit him with
Bleck 27:05 I really wish there was a better solution for Bleck, he only ever goes 3D if you hit him while in 2D, and if you drag him in with Thoreau he instantly goes back to 2D before you can hit him. the only way to actually land hits on him in 3D is by freezing him. I don't know why out of everyone the pre final boss is one of the few that doesn't work in 3D. I really wish that he was more like Ch. 6 Mimi and Dimentio and flipped back and forth on his own
Super Dimentio 32:15 I'm pretty inconsistent at this one, I usually win maybe 1 out of 3 times when I get lucky and hit him multiple times. I tried using many strats but thudley seems to work best
Shadoo 33:35 Dark Luigi and Bowser have the same AI as Mr L and 7-2 bowser so they're not too different. In hindsight I should have brought a shell shock to the pit with me so I could beat Dark bowser without going back to 2D, but I've already shown that off so I'm not too bothered. Dark Peach and Mario are interesting because they're both hard to jump on as if you try peach can use her umbrella and Mario can hammer. I decided running away and getting then to run into boomer as the best option. Also apparently their vision is pretty short, Mario never went into 3D on my previous attempts which is why you see me trying to pick him up in this attempt
the strats I used for 7-2 bowser and wracktail are exactly the same as their counterparts, I feel that showing them would be redundant - เกม
I swear the meter running out is the most anxiety inducing thing.
That's the thing that makes this challenge awesome. You're essentially on a timer to beat the boss

Yes, but this timer would become most detrimental if Mario takes too much hits and reaches low HP because suddenly it starts counting down your last digits of HP, especially combined with a no items challenge (because, honestly the game is just a little too easy).
Also, don't forget you can only flip as Mario, who defeats bosses significantly slower than Bowser and even Luigi.

With some fine tuning, this game could have benefitted from being fully 3D and more of an action RPG than a platformer tbh

If Paper Mario have boss replays like any other Mario game, you have to restart the whole thing again.

About that. When I originally tried brobot my level wasn't high enough to do damage without the red candy. I would end up dying to 3D damage since it's impossible to move up or down in 3D and it was highly unlikely to spawn at the right elevation.
I leveled up to the minimum amount I could do damage without the candy, so that's why it was so close (also because I suck and got hit a lot)

@@finnanima2413 it's impossible. The D pad on the Wii remote only has 4 directions. Up, down, left right. When you're in 3D up and down move you forward and backward, there are no other buttons for going up

Watching this makes me wish that nintendo spent more time fine tuning the 3d mechanic for the boss fights or even some more of the level areas. They kind of limited themselves with having only mario being able to flip and it can also feel quite awkward to control in 3d on a wii remote dpad.
I enjoy SPM but i think if they spent more time working on the 3d, it could have been a much better game.

35:29 mildly uncanny you brought shadoos from the 2nd to the 3rd dimension to fight them. And they fight even stronger in 3d than they do in 2d.
This game is soooooo easy man, the 3d meter has zero fear and anxiety. The punish for the depletion is... 1hp, and it refills everytime mario changes their hp, with regen or damage.
Is it me or are some of the bosses creepy in 3D?

No 7-2 Bowser fight :( I mean I know it's the same fight basically but still. I would have loved to see Bowser swing his arms in a different perspective
Bowser does more things in the second fight, like dashing and more jumping

This game is good, but people who think this is better than pm and ttyd need to get their heads checked
Super Paper Mario is the only Paper Mario with unique mechanics that make the game worth playing. Later games only have minor combat gimmicks, and still follow the same grindy combat loop. Super Paper Mario is better than the rest in almost every other aspect as well: story, music, characters, locations, and optional content. People just tend to ignore flaws in older games while pointing them out in games like this.

@@imoldgregg8 The action RPG style gameplay along with a perspective mechanic definitely makes this game stand out. Flipping can be used for dodging enemies, exploring the areas, and solving puzzles.
There’s nothing original about the first two Paper Mario games aside from the RNG stage gimmick in Thousand Year Door, which is underutilized and only affects battles. You people think the combat is good because you have never played an RPG before.

I never really got why being in 3D in this game runs on a meter.
Most of the puzzles involve flipping into 3D and most enemies are only in 2D. These presumably are the two main reasons to not make you be in 3D all the time

Kind of agree with this. When playing it years ago I always thought that at least peach and luigi should be able to flip. They could have made some interesting areas by doing that. Unfortunately, they made it so that flip was Mario's unique talent so giving it to everyone else would have made him useless.
Looking back though I don't think nintendo did enough with the 3D mechanic. Maybe if the game came out a few years later it would have been more refined.

technically you voluntarily unflipped during the Count Bleck battle. Also u voluntarily unflipped when fighting shadow Bowser and shadow Peach and shadow Mario. So its all boss battles in SPM except 2.
It's unbelievable the human ability to point out the slightest flaws even though the rest is done perfectly...
