  • So if you watched the previous video in this series you will have seen that the Vevor Chinese 7x14 lathe I had purchased in January had a defective footplate on the Tailstock. The V notch that guides it was not cut to the right depth. I worked with Vevor to try and fix this problem. Since I do not have a mill I was unable to cut the notch deeper myself properly. Vevor offered me this:

So the first option, given the costs for materials and setup would have run about $700 at a good shop. Out of the question.
The second option is what I was trying to get them to do, but the company in China that actually makes these machines was just ignoring Vevor.
In the end, I went with door #3 and took the 35% refund.
So then, I give Vevor a good rating for addressing my problem, not quite the way I wanted, but still they did what they could. The problem is, the Chinese maker of that lathe is still sending out junk.
The new tailstock comes from the company Little Machine Shop. Again they are selling reasonably good stuff. Having said that, I do wish that they would sit on their vendor for this tailstock to improve finish paint quality. Aside from that, the tailstock should be a good investment.

Everyone else says, "the tailstock is not ever really centered" when the problem is obvious. Thanks for noticing, and giving me the idea of contacting Vevor. My lathe arrived last nigh, exact model. I'll attempt shims, but if that doesn't work I'll contact Little Machine. Thanks for the video.

I wish you all the best. That they did not machine that plate correctly was irksome to me.

Got my lathe a month ago. They've upgraded the tailstock and it cuts a good center. Still rate the tailstock

Were it me, I would be chasing down that tick before you get out of the warranty period. There should be no ticks, clicks or any other noises. This could be a bad bearing. In the end, you will most likely be doing what I plan to do, which is to replace the headstock bearings with angular contact ball bearings. This allows a bit more accuracy in the bearings.

Have the same tailstock misalignment problem with a mini lathe I got on clearance at Tractor Supply. Can't complain too much as I got it for only $250. I remachined some parts and got it fixed.

I'm glad that you could solve it yourself. I was in a mood to be a cranky old man and demand that the vendor actually fix the problem.

Treat yourself to a Harbor Freight mini milling machine. I did and I like it. Has come in handy for a number of projects. Complement that with a spin index and a rotary table and you will be set. Used the rotary table on the milling machine last week to create perfect sized holes in flanges I made for the exhaust system pipes of a 91 Mazda 626 I am restoring.

I had the same problem with my vivor minnie late.but I did manage to make it right. Thank the lord. Mine is kind of noisy. Other than that I can live with that. Thanks for the heads up though. 👍❤..

Glad that you were able to get your lathe right. These are fun little machines, it's a pity that the maker does not bother to cut that part properly.
So as to your noise problem, is it in the bearings in the headstock or in the gear train for the lead screw or where. These should run reasonably quietly.

MINE SHOWED UP A WEEK AGO. MY TAIL STOCK IS FINE BUT TRYING TO ADJUST THE CROSS SLIDE HAS BEEN IMPOSSIBLE. AFTER DISASSEMBLING AND REASSEMBLING MULTIPLE TIMES I FINALLY NOTICED THE GIB IS BENT. I'M GOING TO CONTACT VEVOR AND SEE IF THEY WILL SHIP ME A REPLACEMENT.

    • @oldfarthacks

I wish you the best of luck. I tried to get them to replace the foot plate for the tail stock and in the end all they did was throw lots of money at me, a massive discount. But making a gib should me a reasonable project. I haven't yet had to take my cross slide apart so I don't know how that gib is set up.

when placed without any adjustments its off to the left probably because the headstock of this lathe has the same problem, it doenst make full contact with the bed and its slightly tilted, i have the same model

There are any number of errors possible here. In my case, the V cut into the base is too shallow. One of these days I will recut that to the right size. But part of what is going on in this series is seeing if I can get the supplier to actually fix the problem.

lol, i thought the box was really small when he first pulled the knife out to open it then he grabbed the knife with his other hand an i could actually see how big it was. that was pretty funny, still wanted a bigger one. im looking at trying to find a tail stock for my vevor 7x14 lathe, ive been using shimes to get it centered but its a fight everytime to make sure i get it perfectly centered an i just want to buy a new one so i can avoid that head ache. but i cant find anything that say they fit my lathe so ive been afraid to buy one out of fear of getting it an not being able to use . i just ordered a oxa tool post for it cause the first one i got ended up have a aluminum block for the tool post so it works but has trouble when i go to cut a part off, even with brass it flexes when parting so i have to go stupid slow but hopefully this will help deal with this. id like to upgrade anything that is going to give me trouble to start with so i dont have to worry about if its me or the machine thats having issues. im still learning to use the lathe, an i got a mill not long after the lathe so i looked at trying to fix the tailstock but i still have alot to learn on it an removing material wouldnt fix the problem anyway cause im having to use shims to get it centered with the chuck so its they removed to much to begin with or something im not sure, ive not seen a good tail stock yet so im not sure really what the difference is, i just know it takes me shimming the right side of the tail stock an adjusting it side to side to get it to center with the work piece.

      Hi James
I am glad that you got the joke with the knife, that is my biggest folding one. It was a gift from a friend a long time ago. When I include an unboxing I try to throw in a little fun stuff.
As to getting a tailstock that will fit your lathe, the one from the Little Machine Shop, their part number 2502 is what I bought. It is designed for lathes with a swing of 7 inches. That one lined up quite nicely for me. It's $86.16 as I type this, plus shipping, so it comes up to about $100 to your door. In talking with the nice folks there, and they really were nice to me, they said that they need to update their listing to include Vevor and a couple of other companies.
The point is that for our machines, which are 7 inch swings, the center of the bore is supposed to be 7 inches above the ways. That means that anything like a tailstock or stead rest should also have it's center 7 inches above the ways.
Now as to the tool post, did you watch my video series on buying an OXA tool post. I ended up buying one from Shars. They did have to replace the 250-002 holder because it had a bad screw hole, but they did that with no muss or fuss.
Anyway, congratulations on getting into metal working, it can be fun and perhaps even profitable. Let me know how the new tool post and tailstock work out.

@@oldfarthacks shars is the one i ended up picking up on amazon, an i hadnt seen ur other video, i just stumbled onto this one while looking for videos of others with the same lathe an what they ended up using to replace the tail stock, really appreciate the info, i will be pick up one of the tail stocks cause that has been the biggest head ache ive had with messing with these machines so far, but i'll be watching ur other videos as i get some spare times, thanks again.

It's another brand much like Harbor Freight. They resell a wide range of products, a somewhat wider range than Harbor Freight. But I will say that they do try and keep their customers happy. And yes, I did add a letter into the name, that is my right as an old fart.

  • @Reaper54

On some real u could have fixed it yourself w a hacksaw

    • @oldfarthacks
      @oldfarthacks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I could have, but where would the fun and for that matter profit be in that.
The one problem with doing such work with a hand tool is keeping the groove at a pure right angle to the guide on the top of the plate that aligns the actual tail stock. With just a hack saw, it would be quite easy to put in an angle that could ruin the plate.
I took the alternate route, trying to get the company that makes and or sells this to improve their product. So many other people have talked about buying these lathes and having to make this repair.
As I say in the description for this video, $200 bucks let me buy an new proper tail stock and now all is good. Still had money left over, which is nice.
      Anyway, thanks for the comment.

As everyone knows who buys these cheapos self included their not perfect, I have to manually eyeball center the TS till it aligns with the center of the part in the HS, other than that only gripe I have is the motor is garbage and stalls during a cut which of course can be modified with a better motor....but for for $500 shipped I can't complain too much...
