    The Volkswagen Golf GTI is viewed by many as the original and benchmark hot hatch. But is the new Mk 8 2022 Golf GTI still the best hot hatch you can buy? How does it compare to the i30 N and Focus ST? Is the new GTI seriously worth it given the price increases? How much does the GTI cost anyway? And are the GTI options necessary?
    Should you consider the 2022 Golf GTI for your next sporty hatch? Or is it worth waiting for the Golf R Mk 8?

    The price of the new VW Golf GTI ~ from about 45K - 65K in 4 years ~ makes me wonder if VW are raising ICE prices to narrow the sticker shock to their EVs.
    Because they will need to be selling EVs in bulk quicker than they will be able to cost-down. When the ID.4 arrives, it will seem sensibly priced. EDIT: Its also now competing with a Tesla Model 3. 5.6 seconds to 100. Better depreciation and 1/3 the running costs.

    VW South Africa was planning on media launch last month but they have issues with chip shortages and stuff so now the darling of the moment is 128ti. Please also do 128ti because I know Australia and South Africa are short changed here as we are getting detuned GTI & 128ti with 180kw compared to European with full fat 195kw/400nm

    I bought my base model manual Mk7 GTI in 2015 for $43k AUD drive away. Those days are gone. I can’t justify the price of the Mk8 GTI.
    When I get my next car, I might take a look at something like a i30 N-line premium hatch. Manual with 150kw, DAB radio and heated / cooled seats. It’s all I really need as a daily drive at a much lower price than the new GTI.

At a time where there is stiffer competition from competitors, VW decided to cheap out on the overall package and raise prices. The pricing of this doesn't justify that aspiration. It's still sedate enough for regular driving but it seems specced up for people who want to take it on a track on the weekend. I'd prefer a car priced in the mid 40K AUD that goes back to its roots. Perhaps that's where the Polo GTI makes more sense to me.

    Put in my reservation fee for the car today. I was struggling if I wanted Mazda 6 GT SP or the Golf GTI. I still have this struggle. Partially because I know Mazda will be able to give me 5K off the original price, while the Golf GTI only offer a 1K bargaining, half-price servicing, and 1-year rego is fairly standard. I know these 2 cars are different, but what would you reckon? I still think the Mazda6 wagon has better potential in modifying and better exterior design. If anyone sees this comment, please comment and help me out. It's not too late to pull the pin yet.
    P.S. I don't have a family, but to me, Mazda 6 is appealing solely because it may be good for some road trips/ long journeys/ less likely to be stolen/and has a more luxurious interior but looks subtle ane low-key.
    However, love how GTI sounds and handles. I have never had the chance to test drive Mazda 6 because the local dealer doesn't have this car (across the state!)

      @@chasingcars I just bought a base spec one for $52k with my corporate pricing and existing relationship with dealer. A GTI isn’t supposed to have leather and a sunroof. I feel the car is worth just about what I paid for it and certainly feels sharper than the 7.5. The 7.5 is starting to look old and tired inside as you would expect from a design that is almost ten years old. I am on my seventh GTI spanning the last twenty years so it would have been rude not buy a MK8. The biggest issue facing buyers is not price but rather supply constraints. Not many coming here this year.
      The new R is an animal and will be $70k plus ($65k ish with corporate pricing I suspect). Not many cars at that price that will live with it on the performance front.

    So I pose this question. Is the mark 8 GTi a big leap forward from the mark 7.5 and if not why would someone buy it given the additional price tag?

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a marginal step forward, but I suppose my key point is that the package was already very good - the GTI didn’t need to be reinvented. As for the price: the market will pay what it will pay. You can no longer buy a brand new Mk 7.5 GTI in Australia. They’re all gone. So if you want a new Golf GTI, it’s Mk 8 or nothing, isn’t it.

      (1) False; you can move the armrest backward to access both cup holders. The front cup holder is always accessible no matter what. (2) Please provide justification. (3) These were as-tested figures, so your comment is beside the point.

Bought brand new for $30,000 LESS than a Mk8 drive away. That includes the extra $$$ for a 5 year warranty as it was 3 years standard at that time. I'm keeping the Original until I go electric.
