Living Room Makeover: Trashing the ‘70’s

  • Some people want to make a room feel fresh and modern. A few, a very lucky few, prefer a room to have a feeling of dignity, honor, and antiquity. I am one of those few.
Using "reclaimed" materials, a 1970's living room is taken back in time to the early 19th Century. Tearing down an historic structure and using the parts for modern decor is, to me, akin to murdering a random person to harvest his organs.
I have preserved, hopefully for centuries to come, irreplaceable family artifacts that are the direct product of their labor. Anyone who has hewn a timber knows exactly how much sweat is represented by each blow of the axe.
The floors are new but done in an old style. The walls are plastered over wood lath. All in all, the room is quickly becoming my favorite despite having no direct connection to my family. That connection has been made and now I may sit by my wood stove surrounded by six generations of my family. There is no better feeling in the world.

Great video man I wish your videos could reach more people. I have learnt so much from only a couple of videos watched so far.

The hand hewn lumber was very cool to see. Great video man. Thank you for sharing as always.

It’s my pleasure. Hewn timbers add a lot of individual character to a room. Knowing who hewed them and when, though, makes a room feel almost like a museum.
