Can I Smoke Marijuana?

  • If you’re wondering if you can smoke marijuana, Pope Francis offers some advice:
    “Let me state this in the clearest possible terms: the problem of drug use is not solved with drugs. Attempts to legalize so-called recreational drugs are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired affects. Here I would affirm what I stated on another occasion: no to every type of drug use. It’s as simple as that.”
    But if the answer is no, then why? If it’s not an issue from a legal standpoint, what’s the problem with smoking marijuana?
    Here we are talking about recreational use and not medicinal use. Anyone who uses marijuana for recreational use is looking to cope with something deeper. They’re encountering difficulty of some kind in their heart, and turn to marijuana to numb the pain for a while. The problem is, once the drug dies off, the heart is still troubled and the emptiness is deeper.
    Marijuana alters your perception of reality. This is a problem not only because it impairs your judgment in the moment. It also leaves a lingering belief that the drug is helping you cope or escape from the troubles of your heart. When the mind finally catches up and sees marijuana actually isn’t helping, it often tries a harder drug.
    I should not be asking whether using recreational marijuana is morally wrong, but whether it is helping me grow in my relationship with Christ. If I know I am free in Christ, why do I need marijuana to be free or to be who I really am? God is reality, and marijuana makes you escape from reality. Pope Benedict XVI said:
    “The patient and humble venture of asceticism, which in small steps of ascent comes closer to the descending God, this adventure is replaced by magical power, the magical key of drugs. The ethical and religious path is replaced by the technology of drugs. Drugs are the pseudo-mysticism of a world that does not believe yet cannot get rid of the soul’s yearning for paradise.”
    “Paradise is waiting for you in reality, not in a cloud of smoke” Fr. Malachy says. Don’t let your hearts settle. Turn to God, and experience the real version of everything you’re looking for.

What helped me was my brother he knew i had a problem and he got me out of the situation i was in without judging me and i think that was the best feeling ever was not being judged for using drugs. @Joseph Bananas he wasn't referring to the priest as a stoner he was referring to him self not being a stoner.
      Perhaps the one questioning doesn't know that stoner means Marijuana smoker in the United states.
      Or perhaps he takes offense to God being compared to a drug .
      It is ok that this little saying is beneficial from some and stumbling block for others. That is my brothers and sisters we must me cautious in are speech and actions so as to not stumble one another on the way. As God refines are Christian consciousness we will improve.

The noise in my head was finally gone, and I could focus on my spiritual life which eventually lead me home.

      I agree with your comment. I believe that marjuana is an escape from a deeper issue which some people do not want to acknowledge. The times when I have smoked, it has a temporary escape, but when looking at the big picture it creates a separation from God. MJ interferes with our ability to build a relationship with God and that is our primary purpose in life. Life is about living with honesty and truth which we all aspire to live eternally with God.

    I used to smoke weed for the longest time.
    *Journaling my worries* with my pen and *sharing my burdens* with christ
    was what I needed.
    Reflecting on my worries and sharing them with Christ gave me the mindfullness that weed gave me in the past.
    Whenever I've *fasted* from carbs or water fasted I've felt less anxious and my compulsive ticks have always gone away.
    Whenever I've taken a *cold shower* I've felt very refreshed and brave.
    Whenever I've been *chast* for 10-14 days I start feeling another level of confidence and people notice that gleam in my eye.
    Amphetamines and weed have given me curage to try new things, mindfullness, confidence, calm.
    These days I feel I'm able chase those metaphysical things without weed or amphetamines.

      Man will not rest until he rests in God. Glad to know you found God.
      One of the reasons man try out many things and continue doing many things, trying out many sexual orientations, taking drugs and other things, is because he is in search of peace.
      And peace is not in those things, instead they will make him more restless until he rests in God.
      Jesus gives peace which the world cannot give. Just have a quiet time, an alone time with JESUS and pour all out to Him, cry out like Peter, "Lord save me" and He will stretch out his hands and save you. God bless you brother

We know all things are possible through God and HE is working with you to eliminate weed and nicotine in your life. Say a Prayer of Petition asking God specifically for what you desire. HE already knows our needs, but likes for us to ask HIM. You don't have to do this alone. Ask Him for help and He will answer you. I believe you can do this! Keep being strong especially in your FAITH.

    That Pope Benedict quote at the end is so incredibly moving, wow. And he is definitely right. The issue with drug use comes with people using it to cope with the world instead of using Christ. However, there are multiple parts to this. The issue with drugs, particularly marijuana, is the same as the issue with everything else in this world, and it hinges upon intent.
    If you have a hard day and come home to your house to smoke weed and forget about your stresses, I believe it is safe to safe that that is a sin, and is not leading you closer to Christ. However, flip the script and come home and get drunk instead of smoke weed, and it is the exact same problem. Now, imagine you are with your friends and you have a few drinks, as was done in the Bible. Using it socially and in moderation can give us recreation that is not for the sake of coping, and can act as that social lubricant that draws us closer to our friends. I believe that the same can be true with marijuana. Socially and in moderation. The issue is not with marijuana itself necessarily, and rather how we use it, and that broadly applies to so many other things in our world.
    I have seen friends destroy their lives and brains with extreme usage of marijuana, but I have also seen people use it socially and in moderation, and nothing ill happens to them. In fact, even something is gained a lot of the time. However, this is just my perspective. God bless you guys for this video.

      Be honest though, no one drinks wine or other drinks for the “nutritional value”, they do it to socialize or “take the edge off” after work. Studies have also found that ethanol might actually be a carcinogen, so any benefits from it are easily mitigated by the negative.
      Weed has its benefits, as a medicine, but smoking anything can cause damage to the lungs. At the end of the day it really is about what’s more culturally accepted. I think we need to stop separating“drugs and alcohol” and just say “drugs” so that we can have a more helpful conversation about the appropriate uses for each of them.

    Does "No drugs" mean no coffee, tobacco, sugar?

    • @kidwithcards2390
      @kidwithcards2390 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think for tobacco: yes, because it is addicting and harmful. If you are addicted you are not free. And as for the tumors it causes, well: "by their fruits you shall know them" (paraphrasing)
      As far as sugar is concerned: no. It is a carbohydrate a type of chemical our bodies consider their primary source of energy. Its not addicting chemicaly and its harmful like just about everything else- in unhealthy amounts ( water is good, too much water can kill you). And if youre thinking of a sugar "high" thats simply a sudden rush of energy that your body metabolised from the sugar, though it goes away rather quickly its not an altered state of mind.
      As far as coffe? Im not sure.
      Hope this helped at least a bit.

It took me a couple days to be humble enough to pray. This was deeply troubling. I couldn’t quit-awful. I struggled many years on and off alcohol for seven years. I understand the concept of how using weed as a way of “putting ourselves on a higher plane” is wrong because the best way to come in contact with god is to be in touch with reality. But I don’t understand! If you only drink when having fun with your friends and you don’t become an alcoholic it isn’t a sin, but why can’t you just smoke weed when you’re having fun with your friends? Not trying to say it’s totally fine to just be addicted to pot but it’s also not okay to be addicted to alcohol. So as long as you’re not becoming addicted to the use of pot or depending on it for your happiness, what’s so bad about it?

    • @HumorousJerson2

      because drugs affects more different than alcohol. A study shows that a lot of people are using drugs and get addicted by it while alcohol, (not in abusive use) is only a part where you drink in a party and probably wont do it again until next occasion..ofcouse alcohol addictions is still bad, because thats where all bad things can start. but alcohol is easier to get rid off than drugs.

    These arguments aren't completely watertight to me. Jesus' first miracle was creating wine out of water at a wedding celebration...we can assume people were freely imbibing and probably drunk. The Catholic church also encourages fasting and we have accounts of Christ and Saints doing prolonged fasts that can also be viewed as altering their mental states, as these often lead to hallucination. People's mental states also alter from day to day depending on their diet, sleep, hormone levels, exercise, external events that influence mood. What even is a clear state of mind?

    • @Lucy-dd7mx
      @Lucy-dd7mx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the basis of this argument is not letting something else become God to us or alter who we are...then we need to eliminate everything that *might* have negative consequences- what about sugar, alcohol, processed food, exercise, caffeine, youtube?! I just think this is highly personal. Most people with otherwise healthy lives rarely indulge and have not developed a dependency.

      Agreed. However, smoking it is counterproductive because you can’t control dosing and are inhaling cancerous chemicals when you smoke it. Better way is to decarb and infuse in oil for sublingual or ingested use. There are ways to do this where you can actually dose the amount of THC you are using.

    • @Benderdidit
      @Benderdidit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Just to see where this goes but weed can't kill you, so dosage is regulated by the quality and strain. Similar to beer, wine and liquor. Also weed is used for helping to cure cancer so carcinogen like wise is moot.

      What I can share is the parable of the Prodigal Son. Might be because of his confusion in his identity that changes him and doesn’t want to talk. But be always there for him. When I was a “lost” son, my parents were still there and welcomed me. Sometimes I think that I don’t deserve my parents because they still take care of me after everything I’ve done. This kind of love is the one anchoring from God’s unconditional love for us. Don’t stop reaching out for your son. Be someone who pours out God’s love, so he can turn back to righteousness and to you.

      Imo that just sounds like he’s hurt by the fact that you didn’t accept his decision. Its a difficult situation but one that you and your family must stand firm on with love in your hearts - like the prodigal son he was the one who has abandoned you and your family, not the other way around, and unfortunately it’s a path that many people take in today’s world. Just pray and have hope and Gods will be done he will come back onto the right path. God bless 🙏

    I’m not sure I’m completely convinced. Everything said about cannabis can be said about alcohol. I find a closer connection to other people while high. I think its biggest danger is when it’s used to escape the problems of this world. I think, like alcohol, it should be a case by case basis. What is sin for one may not be for another.

    • @thepunkrockcatholic
      @thepunkrockcatholic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nomore4x4s You’re right, some people become psychologically dependent on cannabis if they use it irresponsibly. (ie use it to cope with their problems or to avoid responsibility) I completely agree! I also think a lot of the “weed culture” is sinful. But alcohol can be psychologically and physically addictive, and has an extremely sinful culture associated with it (ie college frat parties)

    AMEN to this. God's love and Truth is found in REALITY. With that, if you're going to use medically, Moderation is KEY. Including dosing and frequency of use. This video is awesome because the most important question: "is it bringing me closer to Christ?" ... Medicine is sometimes needed outside of prayer for certain issues, and if we have the resources we should use them. But BE AWARE. Using weed medicinally or recreationally is mentally addictive. "WE WERE MADE FROM FREEDOM" Be vigilant, be careful, and be connected to God. If weed is keeping you from being cognitive at Mass, when praying, when reading scripture, and building yourself up with goals and desires, then it is keeping you from God.
