    Very valuable tips. Unfortunately, many people rate Dirt Rally 2.0 very severely, which can be seen in the forums under the reviews. The most common complaints are the degree of difficulty of driving, which in my opinion is the biggest advantage of this game. In fact, all you need is a little patience, intuition, observation and conclusions to discover what's going on and then derive great satisfaction from the next perfectly defeated turns and victories. regards

      General rule of thumb is, if you can see the extent of the corner and the road following, keep on the accelerator. If you can see the road up to a corner but can't see the rest, lift and trail brake, get the front pointed towards the inside of the corner. If you can't see shit and there's a hairpin somewhere from 50 to 300 m, just pray. :v
      Also, don't be afraid to stay in the same gear through a series of turns! Keeping your RPMs in the best range (known as powerband) will be better than gearing up and gearing down again (in the hairier places in New England, Argentina, etc)

    I'd say put the co driver calls back as far as you can manage, then look and think further ahead. The pros are always mentally a few turns ahead. Try it and it's amazing the difference it makes to the flow of your driving.
    Also try and think 'steer more, brake less'. Especially with a FWD car just hustling the wheel makes a big difference. Watch the pros again - huge steering input, sliding the car to slow down. Not the easiest with a normal wheel or if you're used to the kind of careful steering of circuit racing.
    Lastly; watch the replay. Not only does it add a break but answers the question 'How am I a minute slower?' Amazing how many corners I got wrong, how slow I looked there.
    Actual last thing. Go back to a circuit sim after Rallying. Seems easy doesn't it?

    • @j0rd4n86
      @j0rd4n86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's interesting, I prefer late calls because I'm just reacting to the one that's coming up giving me more focus on each corner individually.

    • @berni2905
      @berni2905 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say put them early enough so that you can process them and react properly. Putting them too early makes me really distracted because managing too much info while racing just confuses me and I get lost in those calls. But maybe that's just me and my low-RAM brain. You rarely need to know more than 2 corners ahead.

    1:20 I think Dirt Rally 1 starting with slow cars from 60s is a good thing for that. You learn the mechanics of the driving easier with slow cars. Modern cars have better handling but they are too fast for beginners.

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Another important trick to learn for any proper sim (and this applies to real cars, too) is to control the weight transfer of the car. If you expect fast corner to be slippery / understeer, tap the brakes a bit just before turning the wheel. This compresses the front suspension and moves the weight of the car more over the front wheels. When you turn *after* that, the front tires will have much more traction compared to rear and you get temporary oversteer behavior which may help a lot to get the car turning.
    However, make sure to not rotate the wheel too much while applying the brakes or the front wheels will lock and understeer when you turn the wheels too much (again, this happens with real cars on slippery surface, too). If that happens, you have to rapidly turn the front wheels (near) straight and then start to turn the wheels again when you feel traction. The controller implementation in Dirt Rally 2.0 really doesn't support this because the wheel rotates way too slowly with the controller (no matter the config, I've tried and tried) so to fully execute this, you need a proper wheel. Something like G25, G27 or G29 should be good enough. A proper direct drive (DD) wheel will feel much nicer and give better (more realistic) feedback but that's not required to actually control the car accurately.

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@oxygengraphafonadelaverberator Avoid sliding. Basically you want to use similar cornering as in karting but you can slide a bit if you drive car with enough power. In practice, the braking must be on the spot, fully release the brake and then turn into the corner without doing so aggressive move that the car would slide too much.
      Basically try to run like Ogier in this video: th-cam.com/video/zFNqHaqnvHw/w-d-xo.html

    • @oxygengraphafonadelaverberator
      @oxygengraphafonadelaverberator 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MikkoRantalainen Yes I see. Ogier makes the hairpin with almost zero slide. That's fascinating how two top drivers approach the same hairpin in completely different ways. Ogier is ever so slightly ahead coming out of the turn.

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@oxygengraphafonadelaverberator I agree. The point is that for some situations the Latvala style is actually better. I think if the road surface is soft enough for car to dig into it, Latvala style is better. If the road surface is slippery and you cannot get better traction by digging wheels deep into the ground, Ogier's style is better.
      The really hard case is any corner where the road surface changes at the corner. And in real world the road surface detoriates so if you're the first car to go, the best style may be different than for the last car.

    I’ve always found the hood view to be more realistic, reality lies somewhere in between cockpit and hood view, the cockpit view is just too much like driving with blinders on unless you have a triple monitor setup and in real racing you have a much larger FOV than in most cockpit cameras in video games but that’s just my personal opinion

    One important trick is to learn "left foot braking" which basically means that you apply some brake at the same time with full throttle. It's a game changer on gravel. How the car behavior changes on left foot braking depends on a car and I feel it's most effective for 4WD cars.
    If you drive with a wheel and 3 pedals that means that your feet will be dancing a lot because you have to brake with right foot if you need to change gears with H-shifter while braking and you have to brake with left foot while applying partial brakes during full acceleration.

    • @MikkoRantalainen
      @MikkoRantalainen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VelociRapT0M That's true. However, it helps with modern cars, too, because if (or when) your brake balance is not 50%/50% you can modify the balance between the rear and front by applying partial braking while the engine is still running at full power.
      If you have foot brake balance to the front (as is usual), you can apply partial foot brake to balance torque more towards the back and you can apply partial hand brake to torque balance towards the front.
      Rally1 regulations for 2022 no longer allow the high-tech center diff that was used in 2021 so left foot braking might give extra performance for cornering during the next season, too.

In most corners you want to hit the apex just like in track racing but for rally cars that may require doing it sideways so you must have accurate control.

    A mental thing I always have in mind when racing on Dirt rally is always try to stay in the middle I remember I was going super fast down a hill with lots of trees everywhere but I stuck to going fast, also another thing about when losing control and not pressing gas and breaks is when you're car is back to facing onto the road just flat out to fight the the car to gain control, and don't break if you lose control or you'll just end up sliding off the road it's best just to get the car back into control by facing toward the road and then stepping on the gas, I only break if I have to do sharp turns and I know the road is more open if it's narrow I shift down instead.

    Tip 3 is really important. Use your eyes for the road, use your ears for the co-driver calls. If you ask me, this game doesn't ask for concentration -- it demands it.

    Very good tips but i think tip 9 isn't because your car becomes "loose" if you're not on brake or gas which makes gaining control back harder, so i would say depending on a situation you should either pump gas or pump brakes.

    I think a very good tip would be to learn left foot braking and lift off oversteer. They are very useful (especially in AWD cars) because you can induce slight oversteer or even enough to get you through a hairpin without losing to much speed like a Handbrake would. Other than that this was a very good video and very informative.

  • @jasonclark3057
    @jasonclark3057 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another really worthwhile tip is 'Set-Up'.
    Setting the car up properly is invaluable.
    Everything from being on the right tyres. To ride hight and suspension bump, rebound, spring rates and anti roll bar stiffness will all make differences to the handling of the car. Also your gearbox ratio settings can really help your stage times. There's no point is having really long gearing that makes car capable of 150 mph, when the stage is really tight and twisty and makes it virtually impossible to reach any higher speed than about 90-100 mph.
    By lowing the ratios, the acceleration of the cat will improve.
    Having said that, sometimes it can help if you slightly lengthen first gear. This will help to get off the start line by decreasing wheelspin.
    Try different settings over and over again until you have 'tweaked' the car to make it more suited to your own preference and driving style.

    A tip: Get familiar with the track through repetitions!
    I'm not a pro in racing games, but in rally games, specifically, I personally think knowing the track by heart is key to conquer any track smoothly. There's no one, not even a pro, who get their personal best (PB) in one go the first time. Most of them, if not all, would keep getting their new PB after repeating the track for like hundreds of times. Co-driver can help you so far, but to conquer a track, you need to retry, and retry, and retry.

    The best advice for this game is to just learn tracks, just to know when, where and how much to break and to steer makes game so much easier. Still if you change cars constantly that probably doesn't help much.

    As for consoles and framerate - both Dirt Rally games are running in 60 fps on consoles (even the old generation), so this isn't bad at all.

    Dirt Rally 2.0 on the PS5 finally has a fairly high and (more importantly) rock steady frame rate with a good resolution. Makes the game easier to learn. Less guessing and less of the brain squeeze of trying to think ahead of the screen. Worth revisiting for PS4 players. Expect some stage records to be broken.

Speaking of my experience (I use a thrustmaster t80) the first time I played with the wheel I couldn’t steer well a 60 car because of the strong feedback so I toned it down got practice and then increased it, it was much easier like that

    I use a dualshock joystick, with only buttons, so that means that my steer, brake, and accelerator are just max and min. The best way I found to help this is use driving assist, and also a good tune for the car to the stage, that helps a lot when you do not have a triggered joystick.

    I usually drive the subies now(2001 mostly) and I prefer 2nd gear on tighter turns on them including most other cars. It really depends on the type of turn though and your car. Some cars have 4 gears so 1st is ideal (1st is better for hairpins though).That’s what I love about the game though is that it really gives you the realism of having to get to know your car more.

    One tip I'd add, even as a newbie myself, is LEARN HOW TO TUNE YOUR CAR! Especially RWD cars. Cars like the Ford Escort Mk.II are completely undrivable and unforgiving with their stock tune. Just a couple changes to the wheel geometry, suspension, and differential, and the car feels like a drift king and even has solid straight-line stability for those fast stages like Finland.

    IMHO grab a good 27" IPS 144hz+ 1440p monitor and a good graphic card (rare nowadays but still managable to find) then a wheel set. The high quality video with high framerate don't need effort from you to make the road easier to read and match the instant you start an action and when it's displayed.

    I have gave these tips to my cousin 'cause he's a newbie for rally games and sim racing as well:
    1. Stay on the track: You don't have to be the fastest driver on the world - with calm driving you avoid more crashes
    2. Use brakes: My cousin goes fast but he's not braking. Over using brake maybe slows you a little bit, but it helps you with tip 1. It also helps alot with turns, specially if you are new for rally games.
    3. If you are unsure what's gonna happen at next, slow down. This also helps with tip number 1.
    4. Free Roam: I have tested a lot of cars in Free Roam -mode. It's the best way to know your car. Sometimes when I'm thinkin: "Hmmm... Do I have skills to drive Group B cars? Am I ready to 4WD cars? How RWD cars feels? Should I buy this car now or not? Free Roam is the answer.
    5. This tip is more for players, who has steering wheel, handbrake and also swifter: Know your gear: I got my devices in this order: Steering wheel -> handbrake -> swifter. Everytime I got new devices, I started to practice in Free Roam to know how to use them. After I felt comfortable, I tested in Time Trial. The result could be: a) I'm ready for real action, or b) Need more practice in Free Roam.

    Some randoms:
    "If in doubt, flat out" is actually the best advice for driving at least Codemasters rally games. The only sure thing that can save your turn is the throttle.
    Also, when you feel like loosing control, the throttle will save you more than doing nothing.
    The weight balancing is crucial, more than anything else.
    When weight balance is mastered, rally feels like dancing and it becomes the most enjoyable driving game.
    For non-tarmac roads, pay attention to suspension feedback, because that's where the grip comes from in those places.
    Never hold tight to the wheel, instead try feeling where the front wheels want to go and just apply the needed corrections. When the FFB feels strong, the grip is good and that is the best moment to apply corrections.
    Use the right FOV for your setup. Avoid FFB clipping.
    Use manual gear changing. It's better than brake in most cases and you need horsepower when you flat out to save the turn.

    • @NoName-kb3xe
      @NoName-kb3xe ปีที่แล้ว

      “If in doubt, flat out” only really applies to 4WD/AWD cars. Mashing the throttle in a RWD/FWD car isn’t going to save you if you overcook a turn.

      Yeah... no. He ended up in a ditch rather often and just kept on driving afterwards, sometimes pretty much rolling his car multiple times without zero regard.
      His fearlessness killed him and other passengers in the heli. There were no mechanical malfunctions there, he was just too close to the ground, showing off his lack of fear as usual. Unfortunately for him, rolling into a ditch with a heli gets you killed.
      I would take advice from someone who literally got himself and other people killed with a grain of salt.
