What about NonSteamLaunchers? I used that on day one with my deck and it's been great. Loads a full install of GOG Galaxy, looks and feels just like the desktop client.
NSL has a number of issues that preclude it from my recommendation. The biggest issue is that, by default, all apps are installed to a single WINE/Proton prefix and this *will* lead to instability and other issues. Secondly, NSL's leadership is questionable at best. I made a video about that here: th-cam.com/video/rqqCz3G5qIc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QCxcSgKkQd9JKq43&t=394
NonSteamLaunchers simply refused to work with GOG for me. It would say it was installing, but didn't do anything. So I installed Heroic on the basis that it seems to offer more than junk store at the low low price of free.
Drama aside, it does still work. it was how I got GoG installed on mine and I'm a Linux Newb. If you're going to use the desktop mode at all it's not brain surgery to get games working with it.
(If I do overlook the first time installation of Decky Loader) I kinda see it this way: Junk Store had one strong position/feature with ease of use and integrated UI to game mode and threw it out of the window with that payment, desktop mode file pasting and initialization afterwards :D (and I guess you need to do it with every update) Anyways I hope one day this situation with launchers and launchers to launch launchers to launch game gets simplified again :) (or Valve finds a way how to seamlessly integrate it to game mode officially somehow).
You should make a video about NonSteamLaunchers and why you think it's a bad choice, apart from the silly drama. I personally don't have any issues with it and I've used it for a long time.
It's usually not a good idea to log in to unofficial forms. However, I trust JunkStore and Heroic Games. You should research them yourself if you'd like to try this.
They are opensource. The way Heroic is distributed is more trustworthy and if they do any monkeying around they will be spotted immediately. Plugins like junkstore are a bit less trustworthy but I think they should still be fine enough. I do not think they will do anything bad.
I installed GOG galaxy app and have it as a non steam game. Let’s you play, back up saves , and unlock achievements. Only downside is that it drains the battery a little faster.

I just got a Steam Deck and I was wondering what to do with my gog games. I suppose that running them from gog I don't have the advantage of the excellent community control profiles right? Also, is This method from the video better than just downloading heroic? If so I will do it
Try GOG (or any other launcher) with bottles. It's MUCH better compatibility with games, and it's also very easy to set up with steam, having even dedicated steam input profiles per game.
Got my deck a week ago and have been using heroic launcher for almost a week as well and I love it only issue I have is my epic games start up but won't cloud sync so I can't just pick up my rog Ally and continue were I left of on the steam deck
Thanks GB for the vid. I wasn't aware about junk store. I'll give that a look. An issue your video doesn't address: The deck recognises the heroic launcher as the app with the control input, not the game itself. Some problems that remain for me (and possibly others): 1) swapping templates for game input - I always use a generic one or have to make it myself. This is very frustrating as deck native games this is seamless. 2) game specific guides are also not available. Any thoughts (from GB or anyone else) on resolving this?
You can install games through Heroic and then manually add them to your Steam library (much like how I added Heroic to Steam). Then launch from the Non-Steam Games section.
meh, just do it manually by adding the launcher installer as a non-steam game, then the launcher as a non-steam game, then then the game as a non-steam game. And you have separate shortcuts in Steam for everything.
But do either of these methods support cloud saves? You can also install Galaxy directly on the deck and add it as a nonsteam game and install games inside of it. And it works with cloud saves.
I noticed you have GTA V on your desktop. Can you only use that for single player or is there a way to get online now? I'm waiting for my deck to be released an australia and have so been looking forward to getting some portable LS action.
I have it installed so I could make sure that single player still worked. I just haven't deleted it yet. Afaik you cannot play GTA Online on Deck. I don't play online games, though.
i just download the setup from the gog page, add it to steam, install it, then remove the setup and add the installed game to my library. no extra software needed, adds maybe 5 minutes to the installation and the game shows up afterwards in the library. only downside is that it doesn't have a nice picture
They tried to launch on Steam but Valve gave them mixed signals about if it was allowed or not. I did a video about it last week. It's still available in Decky Loader
@@gardiner_bryant Thank you for your reply! But is it added as a whole emulator or kinda like a separate title? If it's the latter, then i'm guessing it's possible to add separate .iso files as titles on steam, is that right? It would be awesome, but correct me if I'm wrong.
@@gardiner_bryant I believe you could have at least mentioned Lutris and why you were not featuring it. Your tone in the video did not give the impression that there were other options and thus feels like you mislead your viewers.
@Alex_whatever as with most of my videos, I'm targeting *beginner* Linux users and newbies to the Steam Deck. If I threw in Lutris, I'd also have to include Bottles and NonSteamLaunchers and x, and y, and z. I value brevity and clarity over exhaustive completeness. Not misleading. Simplicity.
Wait a second. What do you mean heroic games by default don't let you set up individual Steam input profiles? By default, each game is installed in its own wine prefix, I thought. If you're launching the games through Heroic, then I would understand what you mean, but Heroic can also automatically add each game you installed to your Steam library. In fact, I think it does that by default.
Its nice to have options. Personally, I had issues getting Lutris to play nice with GOG login so I use Heroic instead. I like the interface better anyway.
Well Mr. Gardiner Bryant, I want to commend you on having one of the best channels around for what I like and your new content scheme y totally awesome.
I bought Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG once, how ever somehow it would never download correctly. It was always corrupt. Got my money back, but had to go to Steam. What I Hate that Ubisoft games needs its launcher, and it I just don't get it to log into my account.
Having to update whole os before installing any new programs is a big downside of linux for me... And you need to do it even if it might break other stuff...
@@gardiner_bryant I will give you that, but the abilities that Lutris has IMO far outweighs it. The scripting alone from the community can make a lot of those games that don't work with just a simple install, work. For example, for a game I recently tested in linux did not work. Took an existing script from lutris from the same publisher and was able to modify that script to allow all the users testing that game in linux have access.
@@gardiner_bryant I will give you that it is a prettier and simpler interface. That said, Lutris is better for any game that requires extra work. The scripting by itself takes community effort on those games that don't just work and makes a lot of them work. After seeing what Junk does from your video, Lutris > Junk. To add some color to the scripting language. I was recently part of a game test where there was zero linux support. But by taking the information from another script from the same publisher, I was able to provide a script for everyone in their discord to get the game installed and tested in Linux. Under the hood, they both do a lot of the same thing. But Lutris isn't that hard of a learning curve.
What a game changer, I'm sure 100% of people know about lutris and heroic. This video would be a discovery on a day when SD lcd launched couple years ago.
I would like the junk store w/o the decky plug in. I don't want that crap. I needed to factory reset my oled and my old lcd multiple times before I finally got it it. It was crap and after the I abandoned it. I don't have problems any more. I would like to pay for the app if I could download and install it somewhere else.
Yes, it seems very janky. I wanted to try it out, but was kind of put off by the huge amount of dependencies that junk store has, in addition to the decky stuff. Junk store seems to require a whole gnome i386 runtime, for an application without a native GUI, this seems excessive. I was hesitant to pay for it, it surely works, but the convenience is not worth it if it is all held together by duct tape. I am happy with Heroic for now, although it sometimes doesn’t add the artwork when inserting games into steam automatically.
Not great advice. Heroic can simply add the game into your Steam Library for launching, and you said that Heroic does not have that feature. It does. Also Lutris, and NonSteamLaunchers should have had at the very minimum honorable mentions. Also, JunkStore isn’t that great of an option, and I prefer the open source community around Heroic. Vid earned a dislike from me.
I didn't see the feature you're talking about. I'll check in that. As for Lutris and NSL? Lutris, while it's an excellent option for desktop Linux, it is not very good on Steam Deck. NSL is a terrible app IMO and I'll *never* recommend it. Furthermore, I'll actually advise against using it along with the chorus of other Linux gaming voices who do.
@@gardiner_bryant Respect for the reply and polite disagreement. I think that Lutris and NSL should have earned at least a mention, and quick sentence or two why you don't recommend.

Drama aside, it does still work. it was how I got GoG installed on mine and I'm a Linux Newb. If you're going to use the desktop mode at all it's not brain surgery to get games working with it.
Intro transition 👍
Word. Too slumped💨 to rewind, but I thought I gotta b High this man had no Hat on
I already have GOG on my steam deck. It runs fine with Proton.
(If I do overlook the first time installation of Decky Loader) I kinda see it this way: Junk Store had one strong position/feature with ease of use and integrated UI to game mode and threw it out of the window with that payment, desktop mode file pasting and initialization afterwards :D (and I guess you need to do it with every update)
Anyways I hope one day this situation with launchers and launchers to launch launchers to launch game gets simplified again :) (or Valve finds a way how to seamlessly integrate it to game mode officially somehow).
My only issue with gog games is that they don't save the save data to the cloud very well. It's a hassle to get my CyberPunk 2077 save data back.
You should make a video about NonSteamLaunchers and why you think it's a bad choice, apart from the silly drama. I personally don't have any issues with it and I've used it for a long time.
Maybe it is a stupid question, but since it's not an official gog or epic launcher, is it safe to add your login/password into an unofficial app ?
It's usually not a good idea to log in to unofficial forms. However, I trust JunkStore and Heroic Games. You should research them yourself if you'd like to try this.
it's open source, so you can have a look at what it's doing with your login token to get your library of games
They are opensource. The way Heroic is distributed is more trustworthy and if they do any monkeying around they will be spotted immediately. Plugins like junkstore are a bit less trustworthy but I think they should still be fine enough. I do not think they will do anything bad.
I've been using Heroic for years on Linux and Steam Deck for GOG... its great.
Nothing stupid about having security concerns 👍 I haven't used Junk Store personally, but Heroic can be trusted imo.
I installed GOG galaxy app and have it as a non steam game. Let’s you play, back up saves , and unlock achievements. Only downside is that it drains the battery a little faster.
Did it show notifications for achievements as well?
@ Depends on the game. Some games would have the notifications pop up and others wouldn’t.
@@iwishyouwould1473 I'm trying coromon. But only the in game notifications work. The gog notifications don't show up. Would you recommend using heroic launcher that has comet . For the achievement?
My tv is fried , I've ordered a quest 3 my steemdeck works great. If I can stream the deck to my quest the world will be right. At least til I get my TV back
I must be the only one that has not been able to log in to GOG for like a year in Heroic.
It worked for me this week. Several times. 😉 Try deleting Heroic's config data and logging in again.
I get in just fine. Heck, the gog installs somehow automatically appear on Steam too
Do non-Steam games work the same as native Steam games in terms of performance, stuttering, FPS, etc.?
Would love to see a dedicated tutorial for OpenGamepadUI
I just got a Steam Deck and I was wondering what to do with my gog games. I suppose that running them from gog I don't have the advantage of the excellent community control profiles right?
Also, is This method from the video better than just downloading heroic? If so I will do it
Try GOG (or any other launcher) with bottles. It's MUCH better compatibility with games, and it's also very easy to set up with steam, having even dedicated steam input profiles per game.
The heck is bottles?
Got my deck a week ago and have been using heroic launcher for almost a week as well and I love it only issue I have is my epic games start up but won't cloud sync so I can't just pick up my rog Ally and continue were I left of on the steam deck
Thanks GB for the vid. I wasn't aware about junk store. I'll give that a look.
An issue your video doesn't address: The deck recognises the heroic launcher as the app with the control input, not the game itself. Some problems that remain for me (and possibly others):
1) swapping templates for game input - I always use a generic one or have to make it myself.
I tried the GOG version of Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 via Heroic snd they didn't work. At least they're on Steam now.
But do either of these methods support cloud saves? You can also install Galaxy directly on the deck and add it as a nonsteam game and install games inside of it. And it works with cloud saves.
Heroic does cloud saves
0:01 what the actual heck was that jumpcut LMAO
I noticed you have GTA V on your desktop. Can you only use that for single player or is there a way to get online now? I'm waiting for my deck to be released an australia and have so been looking forward to getting some portable LS action.
I have it installed so I could make sure that single player still worked. I just haven't deleted it yet.
Afaik you cannot play GTA Online on Deck. I don't play online games, though.
Thanks
Why not having covered Lutris aswell?
Right?
Why cover a paid option ahead of another open source solution for the same thing?
Didn't further development on Lutris stop?
@@Alex_whatever Lutris is paid? O.o
I have Lutris on my Laptop and i am using it without having to pay.
@@MegaManNeo It did? Must be super recent then, as i have been using on my crappy laptop.
I've mentioned it several times, but Lutris is obnoxious to use on the Steam Deck.
Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 on GOG simply will not launch on Linux 😢
@@JamesMcCloskey did you go to properties and ensure proton is enabled?
@@treetree7842 Yes. Wine or Proton - no luck.
Try latest Proton GE in desktop mode. Works flawlessly to me. It doesn't work on Game Mode though.
Haven't tried 3, but there are extra steps for all of them. There are scripts for LUTRIS! to get all these games installed.
i just download the setup from the gog page, add it to steam, install it, then remove the setup and add the installed game to my library. no extra software needed, adds maybe 5 minutes to the installation and the game shows up afterwards in the library. only downside is that it doesn't have a nice picture
I follow the steps but I am logged in into GOG but it doesn’t show the games. What I am missing?
Non-Steam Launcher is another option.
It's not a great option, though. And that's why I didn't include it
Decky loader does not appear on the setting menu. OS version 3.5.19
Is heroic your preferred launcher ?
Yeah, it's up there.
I've never used any of these things, but I thought Junk Store was just removed or something like that?
They tried to launch on Steam but Valve gave them mixed signals about if it was allowed or not. I did a video about it last week. It's still available in Decky Loader
6:24 How are you playing Shadow of the Colossus on Deck? What version is it?
PCSX2
@@gardiner_bryant Thank you for your reply! But is it added as a whole emulator or kinda like a separate title? If it's the latter, then i'm guessing it's possible to add separate .iso files as titles on steam, is that right? It would be awesome, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I have the ISO on my SD card and I added it to Steam via EmuDeck. That entry launches directly launches the ISO in PCSX2.
@@gardiner_bryant That's so COOL! I need to do that on my deck too! Is is hard to do?
Lutris: am i a joke to you?
I haven't tried that in a year but the last time I did on my Deck, it was completely broken. It's not my preferred way to launch games on Deck.
Lutris is not good, heroic have built in support for epic, amazon and gog and also can add or install games from exe
@@gardiner_bryant I believe you could have at least mentioned Lutris and why you were not featuring it. Your tone in the video did not give the impression that there were other options and thus feels like you mislead your viewers.
bottles: hey what about me!
Simplicity.
what I want to know is how to get dos games working.
Do you have any specific game reviewers that you personally like following these days ?
People that find the gems for linux/steamdeck gamers ?
Videogamedunkey, Noah from Steam Deck HQ, and Liam from GamingOnLinux.
What happened to Lutris? Used to be the darling. I still use it as I fear change, I'm lazy, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it
It's good on most Linux systems, but not on SteamOS and other immutable distros
@@gardiner_bryant I guess the UI isn't so friendly on Deck, but it's what I use and what I'm used to!
Use the best tool for you, right?
Thank you 👍😐👍
Yes
Junk store has been remove on steam 15 Oct info just I got.
That's why you need to install it through DeckyLoader
Eh, Lutris already deals with GOG I'm not sure why I'd want to use either of them
Its nice to have options.
Strange, it was working perfectly with me, even the cloud saves.
Having to update whole os before installing any new programs is a big downside of linux for me... And you need to do it even if it might break other stuff...
I use Lutris
Why not Lutris?
Because setting it up on Deck is obnoxious and Heroic is easier for beginners imho.
Heroic vs Lutris?
I'm just busy installing cRaked games though....
They both work great but they are not for everyone.
What a game changer, I'm sure 100% of people know about lutris and heroic. This video would be a discovery on a day when SD lcd launched couple years ago.
No Lutris love?
Lutris is great in desktop Linux, but it's a pain for Steam Deck
@@gardiner_bryant Oh and in Heroic, use the 3 Dots for more options on the Icons or on the Game Page, and it's the top option, Add to Steam.
Gardener I would prefer to just download my games off my PC through GOG's offline launcher than dump them onto an SD card then pop it into the Steam Deck.
Stoped suporting gog when bought steam deck.

I've used lutris in the past but using it on Steam Deck has proved to be obnoxious.

@gardiner_bryant question: do you think deck 2 will come out in 2025, any generational leap in the horizon?
My estimation: Holiday 2025 at the very earliest. But I think it will be mid-to-late 2026, realistically. Note that this is just my speculation and I have no insider knowledge.
One word. Lutris
Just use windows.
