I love gog. Never used the launcher though. I just buy the games I want to play, download the exe file and play the game. I think the first game I bought on there was Diablo 1. Me and two friends bought it and played local multiplayer though the whole game in 2 days. We all bought it, it was cheap and we could afforded it. But since there are no VRM we could have done the same thing with only one copy. (And well Modern Blizzard doesn't really need the money 😥) I have rebought many games on gog, just to get 16/9 support, higher resolution, easier multiplayer, win10 support etc. I think they do good work and I think it should be possible to play a game from the 90's just as I think it should be possible to watch a movie from the 90's (or 1930 for that sake).
I've bought a number of games on GoG that I already own on Steam, usually just to have a DRM-free version that I can even backup installers for later use if for some reason my internet goes out, but also because total version control of games like Skyrim so Bethesda can't break them by releasing a random "update" for no reason years later to make all the mods non-functional for several months. One that caught me completely by surprise, though, is Alpha Protocol getting on GoG. That's a game that, because it didn't sell as much as Sega wanted in the first month or so, they literally pulled the plug on it. No DLC, no sequels, and they even pulled it off Steam and other store fronts to stop selling it entirely. So I was shocked as hell when it popped up on GoG, and the GoG team themselves had actually spent time updating it, adding controller support, modern resolution support, etc, to make it run as smooth as possible. It's still a janky mess of a game, but I still find myself loving that janky mess.
I'm kinda curious how they do it? How are they able to get a sort of exclusive like that? Isn't that expensive hence why Steam doesn't do it? Or Steam really just doesn't bother cuz it's not worth chasing pennies while for gog it's still profitable? 😅
@@danielsurvivor1372 Considering it's release on GoG was attached to a news update reaffirming GoG's commitment to game preservation, something most companies either don't care about or actively oppose, they were probably the ones that approached Sega about it and shouldered 100% of the costs for the updates they did. Sega would be stupid at best and actively malicious at worst to turn down free money from sales with zero risk from a game they had already given up on long ago.
GOG should be supplemented by Steam as using GOG only is too restrictive, however what you get on GOG it stays with you as long as you downloaded backup offline installers. Getting singleplayer game on GOG is in majority of cases the best option (A Hat in Time is the worst case where the game is basically abandoned by developers on GOG). GOG Galaxy launcher sucks ngl but you don't have to use that launcher at all, you can download the game directly from GOG site and run it from exe file. However if you are going to play multiplayer titles, Steam is no brainer as GOG is inferior on this but GOG is for singleplayer games. My main problem with GOG is their rejection policy when it comes to new releases where if they don't respond within 2 weeks, your game gets rejected, like wtf. Getting rejected just because game was crap is a one thing but rejection just by not responding is an absurd, which is a shame
Now they have the Resident Evil games which I plan on buying. I hope we get more RE games and Capcom games on GOG in the future. Including the RE Remakes
The trickle of sony titles seemed to dry up around the same time as they tried to push the PSN sign in requirement. GOW ragnarok and forbidden west have never materialised and would have arrived by now.
If its on GOG, its always a buy. Steam is currently held together with duct tape (strong duct tape mind you) with Gabe. Once the guy steps down, I wholly expect Steam to go into a steep decline.
Honestly even if GOG old school games gimmick seems too niche, I would actually probably start using it more because of it, sadly GOG just seems to lack certain features and especially games(seriously it doesn't have Team Fortress 2 😢) to make it worthwhile competitor to Steam... Yet. But I kinda hope they do manage to stand out and carve a bigger niche, it doesn't have to be massive, just big enough that Steam knows to keep up their A game, while GOG should really try to get more and more old school or even just niche/unpreserved games it would also be nice if there were more ways to see old school games promoted by gog and any gog affiliated channels cuz rn Idk what to find there 😅
I abanded steam because twice in a row they emailed me saying i could not play any of my games if i did not upgrade my pc to the newest windows OS. Nope. Moved to gog.
GOG is my second favourite store front after steam, and you get some really good offers every so often. It's just a shame the launcher is such a buggy mess, once they fix that, i think it will be a lot more accessible.
Only reason i like GOG is they got other older games then steam just today i was playing the OG rayman & it was pretty good . i just wish they had some more older titles from nintendo or ps2 to mix it up
2:29 thats a bad thing? Granted im sad there is no command and conquer.... but i got a ton of games i loved for years. Battlezone, bauldurs gate, q ton of rts and 4x games, and many more!
i got gog specifically to play the older dues ex games and invisible war fails to launch every time. and i cant even get past the first elevator on the steam version. so how is gog better if it wont even launch a game from 2004?
Hmm, that's interesting TBF it's not a worry for me since I alr bought it for Steam, but man I can't believe they'd fail to update IW of all games but some super niche ones do 😅
But still they haven't a nativ Linux Client and under Linux you get better Game Compatibility with something like Proton, because it's a virtualized Container with everything the games needs that it runs in.
GOG is the best platform on PC. Period. I don use the steam-ing pile of sh*t at all. I don't even have an account. If something is only available on steam, I pirate it and if said game ever releases on GOG at a later time, I buy it.
It's never too late to improve (any aspect of your life, not just gaming) Just because you wasted years and money into that steam crap, doesn't mean you are condemned to invest the rest of your life in it.
Unfortunately there are various types of games that are not available on GoG, because GoG only tend to offer "OLD" games instead of "NEW" ones. GoG helps to rise certain games from the past to rise to a good compatibility level which is not possible without it on an ultra-modern system which keep telling you in a blue message that you can go F yourself with your old original CD of a Win95 game. GoG gives you the priviledge to find your nostalgic peace that you already found back in the 90s or early 2000s. Life is no longer peaceful with Microsoft being a nazi toward old games, but we expect nothing less from Steam since the leadership of Steam is also working for Microsoft which is also just a shadow of it's former self. Steam is nothing to trust to. If they get the idea to remove the "licence" you paid for to play a game in your library, they will ruthlessly do it. GoG on the other hand guarantees an all-time freedom toward you. Steam is getting disgusting overtime and would deserve that GoG taking away every single existing game away from Steam, since that would be heaven to every gamer alive.
Amen to what you said. Couldn't agree more. Sadly, idiots (most steam users) see newell and valve as a savior, despite the myriad of examples throught the years where they clearly have screwed people.
I love the concept, but unfortunately, a lot of the games are just ports of PS1 games and such. Some of them are just roms thrown into dosbox. There are good games, but I basically beat them already a million times. ☹️
It's you, but what about the others? What about their historical value? Games has to be preserved just like books, music and movies... but unlike those, games often limited to a hardware or OS of its time, so having games available for sale even with basic emulators and custom patches is already a good thing.
@MobileDecay remind me, how may countries in the world has access to PSN? How many games will be available there? Not to mention you can't have those games on your HDD and pay them offline any time you want (because today you don't actually own the game on a disc - it's just a plastic license key that more often than not is nearly useless without PSN connection and day-1 patch). Actually, GOG is only the tip of the iceberg - their effort is great, but it's not enough for the preservation as a whole. The only way to preserve any software is to find a way for its stable emulation on a computer and making it available regardless of DRM, regional locks or expired licenses - therefore, piracy is just as valuable for preservation as the emulation, many games would've gone forever if not for those. In the ideal world older titles would've been made available by publishers themselves, but as of now - GOG is the best legal option we have.
ThePolterGhast is back at it again with more awesome vids
Drm makes pirating better experience than paying.
GOG is so good i dont even have to install the launcher, i just installed games directly from the website
gog is the best storefront.
It''s funny that Falcom are the one of only japanese devs giving constant support to GOG, at least for their most popular later releases
And SNK tooo
I love gog. Never used the launcher though. I just buy the games I want to play, download the exe file and play the game.

Steam and GOG are my 2 definitive pc game launchers. I use GOG when I'm in a retro game mood.
Petition for more fanart of gog-chan
If gog supported linux like steam does, that'd be a huge selling point for me.
what do you mean when you say support? I play my gog games on my steam deck with no issues so I don't understand what you mean
I use a Windows XP, GOG is my go to for retro games that have tons of games likely to run on my machine.

2:34 This did not age well. GOG's got some Sony titles, SEGA titles and even Capcom titles now.
Now they have the Resident Evil games which I plan on buying. I hope we get more RE games and Capcom games on GOG in the future. Including the RE Remakes
Yeah but I still say the games outside of this are still some of the best and deserve a play.
The trickle of sony titles seemed to dry up around the same time as they tried to push the PSN sign in requirement. GOW ragnarok and forbidden west have never materialised and would have arrived by now.
The way you talk on the fly is really good. Nice video

downloading games to keep from gog is also a great feature i store all my purchased game instalers on a usb hdd
I just found out about GoG and while I’m not a PC player, I do hope it does well in the future.
GoG tends to be overlooked but they seem like a company that really cares about old games
Happy to hear Heroes III bgm
Im a huge gog supporter.

GOG is the best ! so far!
GOG also works with the Heroic launcher on linux
TIL (from the thumbnail of the video) GOG has an anime girl mascot.
4:31 I remember back in the day when ol TotalBiscuit, Jesse Cox, and others would do promotions of games on the site.
It was a blast. :D
Ah yes.... totalbiscuit....... God rest his soul.
*moment of silence please for the Cynical Brit.*
fantastic video. even more important one year later.

Gog is a top dog.
I try to buy first on gog and only look elsewhere if it's not available on gog
I just got GOG to get severed steel
Only reason i like GOG is they got other older games then steam just today i was playing the OG rayman & it was pretty good . i just wish they had some more older titles from nintendo or ps2 to mix it up
It would be insane powermove and redemption arc if Nintendo allowed their games on gog only, but alas it won't happen 😢
@@danielsurvivor1372 yeah I don't know why Nintendo whoring their games like that
GOG is the best system ever!!! I love it.

This video is also underrated
Gog is like ps5 physical copy in games aka drm free. Only difference is physical and drm free games.
But still they haven't a nativ Linux Client and under Linux you get better Game Compatibility with something like Proton, because it's a virtualized Container with everything the games needs that it runs in.

Yeah, kinda sus name, it's gee o gee not gock 🤨
