    A friend of mine was a very senior First Officer. He did not want to move to Captain because that would put him at the bottom of the list when bidding on schedules. As a Senior First Officer he pretty much had his choice of routes and times, which made for a much more pleasant home life.

    Great video. Really professional and informative. Some military pilots who go into commercial flying find it difficult to flatten the cockpit gradient. They are used to being in complete control all of the time. In the past, there have been times where a steep cp gradient in some cultures caused bullying behaviour and unfortunately fatal accidents.

    A little of regulation: "Comander pilot (highest rank on the plane) is the responsible for the aircraft/flight operation during the flight time, manipulate or not the flight contolls." So, no mather who is flying (controlling the yoke/side stik), the responsibility allways will be on the captain...

    • @DutchPilotGirl
      @DutchPilotGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The commander is indeed responsible for everything that goes on inside the airplane

  • @mytech6779
    @mytech6779 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Summary: Captain, first officer, and second officer are only company terms for pay. They were borrowed from maritime industry to give a feeling of reliability to passengers.
    Regulations use the term "pilot in command", who has responsibly and authority for safe operation, and "second in command" who is a fully qualified pilot but without final authority. PIC and SIC do not change during a normal short haul flight, they would only change if the PIC was incapacitated or possibly on an extended long haul while the original PIC is resting.
    During operation there is a pilot flying and pilot monitoring, this only describes the job a pilot is performing at a single moment, this can change many times during a single flight and is simple agreement between pilots.

    This is a very clear explanation. What it implies is that 'pilots' are actually monitors; they don't fly the plane; digital hardware and software does. Flying aircraft on radio control has been around for decades...today an aircraft could take of, fly and land itself.....but not with passengers aboard!.....tomorrow?.........who knows.

  • @brentsummers7377
    @brentsummers7377 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've noticed that when the captain makes his welcome and greeting to the passengers he will usually say 'First Officer John Smith will be flying us to ......' or if the captain is the pilot flying he will simply introduce the crew members. I guess it just sounds more polite and emphasises that they are a team.

    Some airlines BA for example, specify that some landings are Captain only landings. That being the case how does the SIC get experience? One particular airport this occurs is Gibraltar.

    • @chriselley2261
      @chriselley2261 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the US special airports are only blocked for low time first officers. Once they have 100 hours in aircraft type they can land anywhere - at captain’s discretion, of course.
      I’d assume that even in Europe first officers can land at special airports when flying with their airline’s instructors pilots - which happens fairly regularly.

    There is one more cockpit crew less common than flight engineer. Flight navigator.
    These were common for ocean crossing, areas with odd features (eg lots of change in compass variation) or for planes that fly at lower altitudes in areas with difficult terrain like mountains, also more common in the military. The FAA still has a navigator certificate handbook and test.
    The 707 and early 747 built for ocean crossing included a navigator window in the top for measuring stars with a sextant, later 747 still have the hole but it is changed to an emergency vent and roof access hatch. The SR-71 spy plane had an automated star tracking navigation system.

So mainly it depends on their characters, I suppose. Anyway thank you for this interesting topic ;)

    So, there are RANKS (Captain and First Officer) and ROLES (Pilot Flying and Pilot Monitoring). There is also PIC (Pilot In Command). I'm guessing the Captain is always the PIC because he/she is ultimately responsible for all decisions. Is that right? Or is it the Pilot Flying who is the PIC. Is the Pilot Flying the Pilot In Command, so long as the Captain is satisfied with that arrangement?

I ask this as I am interested if a First Officer needs to be familar to be able to fly with both right hand and left hand control of the Side Stick and also familiar where the location of all the switches etc from either seat position. ? Also I take it that you probably wouldnt have both 2nd officers as pilot flying / pilot monitoring at any one time ? great idea to clarify this rather confusing aspect. I learned something about why only the left seat pilot can steer the airplane during taxiing for certain categories! If I may add something about "the past" and the presence of the 3 acting person in the cockpit (flight engineer) I was invited there as a passenger for a take-off (golden days, this was before the tragedy of September 11...) and was rather puzzled to see that it was the flight engineer who performed the task of applying thrust during the take-off phase, and not the PIC. It was a 747, and I don't know if this was specific to this airplane. The engineer seat was positioned directly behing the pilots, so he could execute the procedure.

    Just a silly question (if you mention that my bad). On longer flights who has the right to seat on the left side when captain takes a break. I've seen videos with the 1st officer had a thicker 3 band, senior 1st officer just waiting for to be captain i think that is.

    George the auto pilot flys the plane with assistance from the flight computer. George is put to work during the cruise phase of the trip. George can sometimes land the aircraft in low visibility weather too. 😊

    Hi Dutch Pilot Girl,
    Are you familiar with the Qantas A380 engine explosion incident many years ago?
    It still fascinates me the coincidence of having such a Senior flight crew on that flight happend.
    Qantas has only had 3 significant emergencys in its 70 year history (no deaths) and on this flight there were 5 Pilots on the flight deck.
    A Captain, First Officer, and Second Officer. In addition was a check-captain 'checking' the Captain on the flight. Ontop of that was one of Qantas's most senior Pilots who was 'checking' the 'check captain'.
    Too have a potentially catastrpohic engine explosion that ripped hydrolic lines and damaged a wing happen with that level of flight crew is like winning tattslotto!

    You mentioned the Flight Engineer (2 stripes) but did not mention the Radio Operator and / or Navigator (1 stripe). Long before your time, although Soviet aircraft used them long afterwards.

    Dutch Pilot Girl is a very good TH-cam contributor & a talented pilot to boot.
    Far to much talent fo such a young lady - but I'll happily yield on that point.

    Very glad to hear from you!

    Hi dear, compliments for keeping up creating your video's. We sure can use the distraction and interesting information you're sharing. In case you will be grounded due to the current situation I'd advice you to train your skills using Flightsim 2020 (unfortunately the 737 is postponed until the 3 quarter of 2021) but the sim looks amazing. Wish you all the best..dikke knuffel! Ed ;-)

      DutchPilotGirl or you can fly in X-Plane 11. there is a 737 by default, but also a Zibo 737 (free improvement of the default one)

      Sorry to hear that Stephen. I’m a retired corporate pilot, and in my 45 years went through many ups and downs in the aviation industry. Had several companies bought out, several sold their aircraft due to financial problems, and some just went out of business. But I always found a new job, and it was usually a better one. If you truly love aviation and flying you’ll find a way to continue, even in these very troubled times. Best of luck to you Stephen.

    Together with Mentour, you give the best accurate info about piloting in general. Checking a deep clean of a 737-800 cockpit I found a long blond hair around the right rudderpost. Yours?
