    A little tip here from someone who has experience with distilling and thus the difference between ethanol and methanol. If you buy hard liquor and you want an easy test to know if its safe. Put a bit on a spoon and light it. If the flame is yellow then DON'T drink it. It means its methanol. If the flame is a near invisible blue then it's ethanol and safe to drink.

      Methanol boils at a lower temperature (68C) than ethanol (78C) so I'd say bootleg booze places see some vapour come from the mash and assume it's ethanol. But if it's lower than 80C it isn't hot enough to boil off the methanol.

    Not fake alcohol, but I have been informed personally about a fresh development from the villages, just outside main cities in Shandong. (I won't name the town here) It's dammed cold there at the moment (-8º yesterday) and most of the homes are unheated except for a small cast-iron stove in the cooking area where a few lumps of black coal are burned for food preparation. These are not wealthy people. They have recently been told that they are not allowed to burn regular coal, they must only burn an alternative 'low pollution' coal. This coal is more than double the regular price and burns poorly, so they must burn much more to get the same heat. A few villagers have not yet purchased this other coal and keep burning regular coal. Over the past few days police have been raiding homes and arresting people for trying to stay warm with the old coal.
    A couple of years ago I stayed in one of these villages for a week during high winter as a guest. -15 outside, unheated rooms so everyone wears 'ski clothes' all day. I was made extremely welcome and ate well from meals prepared on their single-pot coal stove. The ability to cook this way is central to survival, but unlike city folk, many in villages lack the hard currency to buy this alternative fuel. They are very unhappy about this development. The feel that they are bearing the burden of anti-pollution measures with their one or two lumps of cooking coal per day, so that heavy industry burning nearby can continue unchanged. It is quite distressing to hear these stories firsthand from people I know, even though I understand how bad the air quality has become in this region.

      Your story is strange. Coaked Coked, Coal or any Carbon Base coated in #PlantFats, also known as CarbonHydrogen or HydroCarb cook really well and last much longer flame, than the very very fast burn of porous carbon matter. ~ the cost difference is the oil it's soaked in. This goes back to the invention of Mauve in Europe, and first Bible texts of Jesus 2,000 years before with #ClingStone plantfats on every person and surface. ~ quadruple or more heat fuel life, if add liquid plant fat oils or solid waxes.

    My colleague got poisoned by fake alcohol in Shenzhen on a business trip. Luckily it was our last day there and I could handle the rest of the negotiations myself as I gave up drinking alcohol years ago, although to our Chinese business partners we had to say that it was for religious reasons or they wouldn't accept it. I had to physically carry my colleague onto the plane. Fortunately it was an Aeroflot flight out of Shenzhen so the stewardess on the plane was used to it and just laughed. Oh, the business partners were absolutely hammered as well while I was clean as a whistle, so we ended up getting an exceedingly good deal. So something good come out of it at least.

    When distilling alcohol, you have to discard the first 5 to 30% (called the foreshot, the amount depends on how well the fermentation was done.) as it is quite toxic as it contains methanol and harsh tasting acetones. When you do not, you get poisoned. When trying to get the maximum distillate, you may not discard it and hence people get poisoned. There is bad tasting stuff at the end of the distillation cycle called the tails. It may not be toxic, but does not taste good.

    • @thebaker8637
      @thebaker8637 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@winecraft5009 It can be both, brewed alcoholic beverages in general have methanol in them but it is not a lot and it is evenly spread out. Distilled beverages, on the other hand, contain a LOT more methanol but it is usually in the foreshots, that is why you get rid of it when distilling, if you don't you can go blind or suffer other symptoms of methanol poisoning or end up with consuming a lot of poisonous chemicals that occur in small quantities but are quite toxic. I assume these fake beers are made specifically by adding methanol to low quality brews or real beer, this is usually how fake booze is made in general. But obviously they can add other shit to it that is even worse for you, the classic one is acetaldehyde (which i think is what the smell reveals) because it is basically the chemical that your body makes when metabolizing alcohol, which is what causes all the shitty side effects and I would assume makes the hangover a LOOT worse.

    Couple of days before I was to get married in Russia to my now wonderful wife (I am Russian also), me and my mates went to a good solid looking bar place in Vladivostok to celebrate. Now, I am a semi-solid vodka drinker. I can do half a liter over a couple of hours with some food, and be totally fine. What we drank at that bar, I cannot really describe. After I took the first shot of that vodka, I thought to myself...hmmmm, strange, but you know, f it. After about 8 shots, it was total lights out. I was completely out of character, I went and jumped into the Sea with my clothes on (my mates fallowed suit), and was just rowdy as hell. The next day, I woke up at my wife's tiny apartment, and for the first time in my life (and last), i literally could not remember what the hell happened the night before. I first started to panic after I noticed that my wallet was completely out of cash, which had around 300 USD worth of money in it. After I called my mates, they all told me how I was spending heaps, lots of food, kept on drinking, etc etc and that at one point I gave my wallet to my mate and said to him :"Keep this safe, because I don't think I can anymore".
    Anyway, that was my experience with total fake stuff. In Vladivostok, what people do to avoid this is order things straight from japan that is legit. Usually the package arrives in 2 days (sometimes overnight) and its fully legit, very very good stuff. But yeah, fake alcohol in Russia is also very rampant and people try to be super careful.
    PS: You guys should visit Russia. Big similarities with China, but also huge differences. It's like Euro-China. I think you guys would find it fascinating.

    I have recently had a bad experience with fake alcohol 3 months ago in Shanghai. We went to a club were we bought some beers, everything was fine until some foreigner took us to the 'free drinks for foreigner's table'. After that I went missing for 3 hours and my friend couldn't find me anywhere... I can remember I only drank one or 2 glasses of the alcohol (I suppose vodka) they were giving me. At 6 in the morning I suddenly stood in front of the club outside wondering why I was there and what had happened. Luckily I got to my hotel safe. The next day I had the most strange hangover I ever had, I felt very weird. My friend suddenly fainted that same day around the evening. We went to a hospital but they didn't do shit and it cost us 200$ per person. My advice to you: Never take any free alcohol in China if there are a lot of foreigners around because if there are a lot of foreigners I think they are more likely to give fake alcohol since they have to give it for free so it's cheaper for them.
    Yes this is a scary story, however in Hangzhou I had an amazing experience where we also got free alcohol but this time we were the only foreigners and a worker gave us the alcohol himself. He even drank with us himself, which is why i conclude it was real alcohol. I didn't have a strange feeling the next day and I still could remember everything. Ofcourse I was also very drunk since we got free booze.
    My advice here is that if you get real free booze, still keep an eye out since you might drink too much of it because it's free ;)
    I hope I could help some people with this...
    Stay awesome!

    Upon opening the package we discovered that the biscuits were identical to Oreo's except for the 'Oreo' characters that are normally printed on the side of each biscuit.
    Well, except that on a few of them you could still see a few remnants of the 'Oreo' characters. So apparently these were original Oreo biscuits that somebody had done the effort of trying to scrape the 'Oreo' characters off each biscuits and then sell them in the supermarket at a lower price than original Oreo.

    Well, as far as the powdery bits of stuff in the wine go. It may well be sediment that does from in good red wines. In fact, if you watch a wine drinker decant an older red wine they take great care to see that the sediment stays in the bottle. THe sediment is cream of tartar (the salt of tartaric acid that forms naturally in the wine).

    My friend was an expat living in China. She bought a bottle of alcohol at a bar, and she kept it there so it can remain on reserve for her use. Numerous visits later, she noticed her beverage tasted more watered down. I wish she refused the offer to have the bar "hold onto it for her." It sounded like a scam from the moment she started telling her story. No guarantee she'd receive her product back, let alone using it for other customers.

    There were definitely at least a few time I got fake beer in China. The worst part is when the beer seems only "slightly off", so you drink it anyways. There were a few times however I definitely got a 22 of Tsingtao and 3/4 of the way through the bottle I legit was just DONE. Not from being drunk, but from a headache and feeling poisoned. Not good.

      Remember most of us survive here for years. If it's a decent bar then it should be ok. There are few real bars, most chinese combine eating with drinking, so go to a foreigner bar. I often drink beer locally, god knows if it's fake or not, I just dont overdo it and I dont drink spirits unless they're from a trusted source. You should be fine! Just be cautious.

      @@zhaoxunyan4016 I find a lot of Chinese really cannot take any criticism of aspects of China. Stop winding yourself up and get off these videos. You aren't going to persuade anyone that they're lying (except Chinese), because they're not. China has flaws, deal with it.

    • @abstractacus1598
      @abstractacus1598 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@cbrtdgh4210 You're absolutely right! But to be fair, in private many Chinese can be more relaxed about criticism and we can laugh about their faults and ours. But publicly it's true what the guys say; it's like some kind of teenage, almost sulking, to dare say anything about the obvious problems in China. I think that's more a party thing than a people thing; the party likes to portray a life of calm balance and harmony, everything is well, everything is ok, everything is beautiful. Anyone who cracks, let alone shatters, that illusion is in for a rough ride. My point would be this; how can things improve if no one is allowed to mention there might be things that need improving? So, this paranoia about foreigners trying to do China down is missing the point and only goes to show why there's a problem in the first place.
