Exhaust Sports Auto Really the new kia forte is awsome I like the design of the exterior and interior with all those features It has some glimpse from the big brother kia stinger The engine also has the atkinson cycle technology instead of the regular oto cycle Nice car What a nice cross path!
At that price point, a torsion beam is simple, solid, inexpensive, it makes sense. That's a compact sedan people are gonna go from A to B with. Useless for Kia to do crazy things.
Thank you for another great review video. I am one of the car enthusiasts living in S. Korea. Hyundai and Kia returned their directions for endurance for the daily car. The previous version of ELANTRA (AVANTE in S. Korea) and Forte (K3 in S. Korea) focused on the specs and digits. However, maybe you guys probably know, GDI engines had some general issues. Lots of complaints in S. Korea and demands of higher fuel efficiency let them develop IVT (CVT). It might not be the best in the whole car industry, they announced that they really tried to improve both the fuel efficiency and endurance. For example, they changed the belts into the chains. And like he says, they emulated the CVT logic programs like the traditional automatic transmission. Here in S.Korea, the overall reputation of Forte (K3) is pretty good (Actually, S. Koreans have some prejudice of domestic cars as not good.) So, I think this version of Forte could be somewhat successful in the USA too.
Ive had mine for one year . 20 years of Honda and I have to say my forte is just as good. 42 mpg at 75 mph on trip. 37 mpg around town. Like it so much my wife last night purchased a sportage . Keep up the great work Kia
@Steve Jones , yes that is true . Ive owned 3 Honda's that have been absolutely flawless . Although I've seen many many Kia / Hyundai products not last much more than 150,000 miles . They have a reputation (at least where I am) of being cheap disposable vehicles
Steve Jones yea some brands that had reputable reliability has fallen with newer designs, and this is exactly why it’s always safe to wait it out, and see what the reliability is.
AutoTech Jord we know it’s quality material, but as far as reliability goes on these newer models, only time will tell, but I would definitely buy a Kia over a Chrysler any day.
I bought the base model, $20,000. It is fantastic! Great gas mileage 30/40, huge trunk!, quick pick-up speed when entering the interstate! I bought it in April, and have no issues. Can't wait to drive it every day :-)
I think it was Regular who said that ford exiting the small car game will just open the floodgates for automakers like Kia to scoop up the lag. And he is right. I’m not much for Kia, but they will have continued supremacy in the low end of the market.
People complain about CVT because they're a pain in the ass to repair and they don't last nearly as long as other transmissions. Technically they're better in every way, but they're normally just not great. I think if you go CVT, make it a CVT. Make it sound like a scooter for all I care just make it reliable some how.
I dislike CVT as well, however Rented a 2017 maxima, the cvt and the v6 where awesome, fast, felt like a dct, downshifts etc , it was put thru it"s rental car paces and never a hiccup, BTW the leather seat in the MAX are nice....however the styling is different . CVT not for me
Yea that's the problem though. there is no downshift, just fake rev matching, etc. That's not what a CVT is for and I feel like that's just adding drive train loss for the sake of not pissing people off. Either give us a straight up CVT because it's better than an auto (minus reliability), or give us a regular auto or manual option. I hate the idea of the "sport shifter" especially in something like a CVT. There are no gears to downshift to, just hanging a rev at a certain point to get more power for a bit. It's silly.
Port injection? Mock me if you will (I know the inherent advantages of direct) but port is just simpler, lower stress, easier to maintain, and you don’t get the same constant clatter of the direct injection engines. I’m not sure how it’ll play out with fuel economy or performance and the like, but those older port fuel injection engines just seem quieter and simpler. I’d take it. The CVT is off putting at times, especially since the Elantra retains the 6-speed automatic, but it’s not the end of the world. They are smooth transmissions, and in a simple commuter and transportation appliance, that’s what you need.
CVT issue comes down to longevity for me. I drive my cars until the wheels fall off and a CVT will die much sooner than a normal automatic. I do like that this one supposedly has a chain instead of belt but even so I don't see it lasting very long by comparison. I'd go Elantra for that reason alone. People that replace their car every few years will probably be fine.
I don't understand why manufacturers don't embrace the CVT transmission as it is. There's no need to decrease the fuel economy because they want the CVT to act like an automatic transmission. If they optimize their CVT transmissions to perform like a true CVT and if it gets amazing gas mileage, people are going to ignore the CVT and buy the car because of the great MPG's they can get.
I have a beef with CVT's pretending to be an automatic transmission. Manufacturers are programming CVT's to do this just to pacify people who have been living with automatics their whole lives. The problem is that the drivetrain is now compromising efficiency and power, just for the sake of the perception. A CVT works on the principle that an internal combustion engine runs most efficiently at a certain RPM given the load applied to it. A real, uncompromised CVT will allow an engine to hold whatever RPM is required. This is what gives CVT's the edge when it comes to acceleration and fuel efficiency. By making a CVT emulate an automatic transmission, their biggest advantage is being negated. It's silly, and I disagree with it.
My issue with CVT is that they wear out fast and are expensive. No matter what metal on metal rubbing will always wear those plates and pulleys out unlike a conventional automatic that uses planetary gears.
...then the true problem is w/nvh and engine noise...make the engine sound better under the hood and out the rear and that should go a long way to quell ppl's biggest complaints - the noise
I actually bought a new LX forte last night and I'm so happy with the purchase, I didn't even know it was a CVT until this video. You honestly don't notice it being different than any other car.
Great work, Friend. I have to admit it, it's a handsome car. Very attractive inside and out. The reliability will be the $6 million question, but I've observed less issues with Hyundai and Kias in the past decade or so...

The vast majority of buyers will still see CVT in print, and may not get to the point of even driving it. It looks like a baby Stinger. It is the best-looking compact on the market, imo. They need to drop the same powerplant that in this Elantra (sport or GT). Can't remember its name. Anyway, I look forward to your complete review. *Great job, as always!*
I HATE when KIA puts the rear turn signals low in the bumper. I would expect it to be a reflector and look for the turn indicator in the main light assembly. This is SOOOOO unsafe for kia drivers. People don't know when you have your turn signal on. Just because you *can* reinvent the wheel, doesn't mean you should.
Back your ass up. You're following the car too closely. Damn, most Americans can't drive to save their life. All y'all need to have your license revoked.
@@JT-fq2bl I don't know about you, but when I'm driving in the city, I can't stop far enough back to see the bottom of the bumper of the car in front of me. There are too many situations where you don't have a view of the lower bumper of the car in front of you for this design to feel sensible.
I find it an absolute joke that they decided to associate the Stinger with the Forte. Edit : I don't think they need to do that as this new Forte seems pretty good for what it is.
Exactly, as much as I think this whole emulated gear ratio thing is a dumb skeumorph to cater to people scared of change, as long as they provide an option to set it to behave like a real CVT I'm not too angry about it. If they don't, then you're getting the worst of both worlds....
@@cyrenecai my Nissan work truck is a cvt. If you put the shift lever into L It will hold max torque rpm (5500) no matter what. It's really fun on twisty roads cause it's always In the sweet spot and it engines breaks while keeping the rpm up(constantly downshifting). Wish they would give you that option.
I'm glad these car companies actually care what you guys think..stay grounded in reality unlike some of these car critics that complain so much that none of us regular commuters will be able to afford a nonsensical fully loaded base model. More gizmos and gadgets = more problems.
Only one thing they don't have on the list - SX model, and this is something that I really wait for. Even main representative for the US I talk with says "We still don't have any info from KIA about the sports version..." That trim will definitely be missing in this new hit from Korea..
Neat that they did that with a CVT. Don't want it. Those engineers could have been working on making an automatic transmission lighter and more efficient.
Great video especially given the circumstances. I'm also impressed by the CVT from what you have documented. But it still seems slow to initially build revs.
I like their (KIA) design language and the fact they give the sub-$20k car the same attention as the over-$40k car. Im still a fan of the Soul, just wish I could get the '+' in a manual and the turbo came w/a real 3 pedal manual. I'd also like to see a real wagon from them and not a Kona/Niro thing
I'm glad to see that you've come back to affordable cars, enough of the 100k lexus crap, thought you will be in their next lexus December to remember commercial! When does he Accord 2.0 review happen? It's a burgh thang.......
I really like your honest reviews Something you did not mention about the cumbustion cycle Kia announce that engine will be working on atkinson cycle for more fuel economy Is that something you have been told about? I enjoy your videos especially the blueprints ones👌🏼
@Noé Andreé i worded my message wrong. I was originally looking forward to the new forte, or even news on the hatch verson. Sx turbo is awesome over all with all the features and alot more power. Its not muscle car power but way better than whati used to have ha
Scott Murphy They actually used to have an extra 30hp, but they dialed it back this generation. Something about powertrain reliability if I recall correctly.
The Optima is so underrated! I currently have a 2017 Forte sedan and I'm looking forward to the new Forte5 Turbo when my lease ends in 2 years. I'm wondering if you can bring the price down considerably on an Optima SX to get it near a Forte5 SX price tag. Here in Québec, midsized sedans are almost a thing of the past since compact sedans and hatches are more than enough of a car for most people. The Optima SX is kinda rare because no one buys them and I'm sure there are plenty around sitting in my dealer's lot just waiting for some one to have a good deal!
ikr right? The whole point of a CVT is the linear change in ratios resulting in better mpg. When you add in fake "gears" it defeats the whole thing. They really need to make it an option that can be disabled by the driver.
Theodore, at the 7:52 mark -- what do you use to hold that blue phone on the dash? As much as Android Auto / Apple Car Play are a step up from the car OEM's software, I still prefer my phone (much more powerful and much less restrictive) and prefer the existence of a CD player as a mount-point.
I can really see the bromance developing between you and Mr. Regular. I can't say I blame you, I've been a big fan of his work for quite some time as well. Will this new Forte be built at the assembly plant in Monterey, Cohuila, Mexico?
My 2017 chevy spark cvt simulates gears just like that at higher throttle. I average 37 mpg in town. I love it for what it is. I also own a 2010 forte koup s9 manual that I love as well
Great stuff again, Are there any "Union Made" in the USA affordable 4 doors in existance? I watche d the "Mechanics Special" and those two guyz said Hyandai/Kia/Lexus thats it? I was watching "Straight Pipes" and you got a shout out.
That CVT has some really quick fake shift points. I'm impressed by that. Does it fake shift under all throttle input, or just during harder acceleration? This new Forte is based on the current generation Hyundai Elantra. Same architecture. Same 2.0L engine. The differences are in styling, suspension and steering tuning, as well as auto transmission. The Elantra uses a 6-spd automatic. It's very telling to me that the CVT equipped Forte is rated a full 4mpg better hwy than the Elantra with 6-spd auto.
I've had my 17 Elantra 2 years 3 months. 37.000 miles now. Has been flawless. Fully loaded, everything works perfectly.very comfortable , Fit and finish are great. I consistently get 29 30 in town. And between 37 to 39 mpg, depending on whether I'm doing 70 or 85. I'm very happy with it !
Far better than a Corolla for sure, too bad so many people are such name brand snobs and won't consider it. This new Forte is easily just as reliable now and you get more features, better style and same MPG for less.
He's a unique guy, super nice and friendly though. He reviewed my car last year and i essentially spent the day with him and his intern. Took me out to lunch afterwards and talked about cars, motorcycles and beer.
ok, fine, you put a CVT in it that emulates an automatic. Can you put a button for turning the emulation off? Heck, hide it in the screen with 2 "Are You Sure?" pop-ups. I'd like to see how this thing actually behaves as a CVT. But then I remember that Mazda makes a pretty descent and simple slush-box. Hmm
It's difficult to see this latest compact car effort from Kia and not compare it to the current Mazda 3. For example, while this Kia has a CVT that simulates the behavior of a torque converted six speed automatic, the Mazda 3 has an actual six speed automatic, and the fuel economy ratings between the two are equivalent. I also don't know why Kia made the decision to equip this car with a torsion beam rear suspension when the class leaders offer independent rear suspensions.
Pretty decent review ... but ... WHY oh WHY would you say "Stay away from manual transmission" Seriously, I will never buy a car without a manual transmission, Currently driving a Ford Fusion with stick shift and looking at buying new car, and sadly they don't make manual anymore. I test drove the 6 speed manual Forte and very smooth. there should be a big discount for manual transmission - due to enhanced Vehicle control and focus on driving ( harder to text also), plus a fun factor. Sin that new Corvette does not come with a manual transmission.
@@savagegeese check out 9:00 you say stay away from that. The big discount i was referring to was INSURANCE should be reduced for manual transmissions. Sadly my wife will not be buying another Kia Soul, as they no longer have a manual transmission Soul. My buddy just bought one of the last 2018 Subaru Foresters. Maybe we are freaks, but Volkswagen still seems committed to manuals. Europeans think we are nuts. As for reliability, I have put over 1 million miles on various manual transmissions and have NEVER EVER had to replace a clutch. Price out a replacement CVT transmission ... Keep up the great reviews.
@Fleetleader101 Had I bought it new, yes. In my case, no. I bought it used with 4,000 miles (for some dumb reason, it wasn't certified). Since I had taken care of the car well, they goodwilled it. I paid $2K flat, and they took care of the other $5200 in parts, labor, and diagnostics. In retrospect, I still felt like I got stiffed a bit, but as long as it doesn't happen again, I'll be just dandy. If it does, I'll be filing a lawsuit. Shame, it's a great car otherwise. Hyundai on the other hand is giving out engines left and right. Under warranty or not.
@@jalderink I dont like 2nd hand anything. Manufacturers warranty is best. These other companies that offer car warranties always find a way out, or pay very little. Been driving 44 years. Learned the hard way about those companies. Useless. Buying new isn't that much more than used. Unless you're buying a 6 year old car with 100.000 miles on it. And who wants that.
You can see the influence of BMW on the interior so big time. I just test drove the 240 and I see that so much in this car for 2x less the cost, lol. Of course it's slower, but... the interior is pretty nice looking.
Savage geese. This channel is amazing. Would you be upset if I request a tesla model 3 review? Preferably not the performance edition. I have a non performance awd in the nyc area I'd be happy to let you use as for it as well.
I'm deciding whether or not to buy a 2019 Elantra or a 2019 Forte. I love the look of the forte but can't get over the Mexican build quality or the IVT transmission. The Elantra on the other hand is built in the USA and has a 6 speed auto but I'm not so keen on the looks. Which would you choose ?
A CVT with pre-programmed "gear" ratios seems to completely defeat the purpose of a CVT. They should make it a mode that can be disabled. If I'm going to be stuck with a CVT I at least want the benefit of max fuel economy.
I think the WRX automatic is a pretty good CVT. You can let it drone and accelerate quickly, or be slower and do fake shifts. I haven't tried a fast CVT car unfortunately. Only tried the 2017 civic (non-turbo) and that seemed slower than the 2017 Mazda 3 2.0 L.
Love my Kia and do not see it as an entry level car?... Maybe? After a lifetime of boxy SUVs glad to be back into a regular car. Mine's the Forte hatch with turbo and since it was bought about this time last year, is a 2017. It has a DCT. Which I was apprehensive about at the time. For me it's hard to understand why something like a CTV has to operate like a manual gear box? My last 25 years are with automatic transmissions. I have driven a manual in that time but really overall; so long as the car can haul ass, what does it matter? Cheers
Thank you very much sir for quick response , I just bough my Kia forte 2019 manual transmission 4 weeks go and I am loving it . The manual is way way way much better . The CVT ( IVT ) was horrible compare to manual . I think anyone wants to buy this car must buy the manual vesrion
Lane departure feature and other fancy sensors in a Kia Forte which is a regular compact sedan? Is Chevy, Chrysler and Ford listening? I forgot Ford completely pulled out of this market and Chrysler/Dodge still experimenting with different models like Dart, 200 and Cruze without getting it right while asking for more money. These features are usually reserved for higher trim midsize sedan models like Kia Optima/Hyundai Sonata/Accord, Ford Fusion, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300, Chevy Malibu, Subaru Legacy etc. #winning
You are right, "Hyundai/Kia are notorious for trying new things." They copy the successful Japanese cars and now they are one of the best automakers in the world. When you stop trying to improve, you lose.

Great bang for buck. Loved this short and informative video.
Then i guess you wouldn't buy a civic or corrola either, as they are cvt also.
Great video, looking forward to the full review. I'm interested in these more simple new cheap cars.
Looking forward to the full review ... cheers!
Great video especially given the circumstances. I'm also impressed by the CVT from what you have documented. But it still seems slow to initially build revs.
Looking forward to your take on this vehicle with a long-term review.
Love your videos very in depth and great quality, will you review the Forte GT? Looking forward to seeing you review it
Agreed
@@yxllxh6377 it drives like a 90s BMW
I like their (KIA) design language and the fact they give the sub-$20k car the same attention as the over-$40k car. Im still a fan of the Soul, just wish I could get the '+' in a manual and the turbo came w/a real 3 pedal manual. I'd also like to see a real wagon from them and not a Kona/Niro thing
LOL at the Outro with Mr Regular...I was waiting the whole video for something like that...
I'm glad to see that you've come back to affordable cars, enough of the 100k lexus crap, thought you will be in their next lexus December to remember commercial! When does he Accord 2.0 review happen? It's a burgh thang.......
I really like your honest reviews
Something you did not mention about the cumbustion cycle
Kia announce that engine will be working on atkinson cycle for more fuel economy
Is that something you have been told about?
I enjoy your videos especially the blueprints ones👌🏼
Yes indeed it will run on Atkinson cycle. I'm saving more of the technical details for the full review including talk about the CVT.
+savagegeese
Sorry for the spoiler😄
Tail lights look amazing, that is all I have for you on this short stint. I'll have more during the full review. Take care, talk to you soon.
I was hoping it would have came out this summer, but I ended up getting a killer deal on a 2018 Optima SX turbo
@Noé Andreé i worded my message wrong.
I was originally looking forward to the new forte, or even news on the hatch verson.
Sx turbo is awesome over all with all the features and alot more power. Its not muscle car power but way better than whati used to have ha
Scott Murphy
They actually used to have an extra 30hp, but they dialed it back this generation. Something about powertrain reliability if I recall correctly.
@@fuckhead4204 my parents have the last gen with 275hp, never had any issues yet but the power is only used for passing really.
@@scottmurphy4946 my dad as the 2.0t Sonata from 2013. It's freaking quick, very surprising.
If you look carefully at the beginning, kind of towards the bottom right, you'll see the soon to be released Kia Dodge SRT.
Driving it as a base model.Really pretty good.Gas mileage on city streets not great. No spare tire, but it seems a place where you can put one.
If people complain about CVTs, THEN DON'T PUT IN A CVT!!! USE AN AUTOMATIC! IT'S THAT SIMPLE! God damn car manufacturers
CVT's are fine, but I worry about the long term maintenance costs
CVT is cheaper to manufacture so they make more on the car.
CVT. 👎👎
Nice car... and good short review!
Thank you I love the way you explaining about the Kia, just because that I want to buy one ☝️
I know Pittsburg has a lot of hilly wild ass roads, is the Kia good flying through the air?
CVT's that emulate gears are stupid. It completely defeats the purpose of a CVT and it makes the car go slower.
ikr right? The whole point of a CVT is the linear change in ratios resulting in better mpg. When you add in fake "gears" it defeats the whole thing. They really need to make it an option that can be disabled by the driver.
They do have where you can turn it off in smart mode 😉
I also own a 2010 forte koup s9 manual that I love as well
I hope MR Regular does a review on this car or at least a POV drive
Very good looking car. Cannot wait for the SX Turbo with the Manual & DCT
This hits home for me. 2014 for me
Kia thanks for keeping manual available in the base model unlike the Toyota Corolla sedan base . Save the manual!
Is Mr. Regular as akward as he looks or is that just a front?
After years of watching (with interest admittedly waning), I think Mr. Regular is truly just that awkward and weird of a person.
You're asking the pot if the kettle is black bro
Both. My read is he's naturally awkward and has doubled down on it as his schtick.
He's a unique guy, super nice and friendly though. He reviewed my car last year and i essentially spent the day with him and his intern. Took me out to lunch afterwards and talked about cars, motorcycles and beer.
Mr. Regular!
I’m curious, on your thoughts if you do get a corolla hatchback for review with that first gear launch paired with its CVT.
ok, fine, you put a CVT in it that emulates an automatic.
What phone mount was used towards the end? Was it attached to the dash?
Pretty decent review ... but ... WHY oh WHY would you say "Stay away from manual transmission" Seriously, I will never buy a car without a manual transmission, Currently driving a Ford Fusion with stick shift and looking at buying new car, and sadly they don't make manual anymore. I test drove the 6 speed manual Forte and very smooth. there should be a big discount for manual transmission - due to enhanced Vehicle control and focus on driving ( harder to text also), plus a fun factor. Sin that new Corvette does not come with a manual transmission.
Did I say stay away from a manual transmission in this video. I dont think I did.
Keep up the great reviews.
ayee you and Mr. R :)
Kia Forte, cooled leather seats - seeeeeeeew fauncy!
Sad I missed this press release event, so close to home too.
I’m hearing the 0-60 is 11 seconds with the CVT. 😧
What did you get?
Do you think they moved away from the GDI motor due to reliability issues? I remember my 2014 blew at 65K.
@@kdash3215 you were treated extremely well. I'm sure no other manufacturer would have done the same. Always buy NEW.
Or, you can be, actually smart, and NEVER buy new! Used cars often come w/warranties, too.
@@stevefranklin8052 Sorry, I didn't know I was talking to the Queen of England.
I have a non performance awd in the nyc area I'd be happy to let you use as for it as well.
loved it so much i purchaced the red 1
I've always loved the forte, I reeeally want a hot hatch version, or at least see what one would look like, should be interesting.
RCR SavageGeese combo ftw.
That's 'cause Honda's are slow.
In the Middle East the Forte or Cerato as it’s called there comes with a 160 hp 2.0 4cyl & thankfully a 6 speed torque converter automatic.
I would like to see a higher-end sport model with their turbo engine along with a manual. I just want the cooled seats as well as a bit more power.
Cheers
this car looks better in person.
Dream car 😍😍 maybe one day...
which ones is better ? fuel direct injection (GDI ) or port injection(MPI) ?? I am clueless sorry .
For basic cars, port injection.
#winning
Is this coming to the UK?
In the house 💯🕵️
Awesome car.
When are you going to review the honda accord?
Everyone compains about CVT.... So we decided to make a CVT
Guess that lane assist will be useful for changing clothes/mascara applications
Looks like a cool car. I thought the DCT in the Hyundai Elantra Sport was pretty darn good for what it is.
Did you get an autograph from subaruwrxfan? He's from Pittsburgh I believe
You are right, "Hyundai/Kia are notorious for trying new things." They copy the successful Japanese cars and now they are one of the best automakers in the world. When you stop trying to improve, you lose.
