Flying to Our Remote Alaskan Cabin

  • Third time is the charm couldn't be more true for this adventure to our remote cabin. A broken boat, high winds, and the river's low water level made reaching the cabin seem near impossible but we take to the sky and finally make it there by float plane. The new wood stove gets its first fire, we fish for northern pike, and enjoy a dinner cooked outdoors over the campfire. Life is good at the cabin :)

    Look, white, lumpy rain!
That was so nice of your neighbor to loan you his boat - kudos to him.
Ya know, maybe it would be a good idea to have a small boat just as a backup to leave at the cabin.
Wow! That stove looks really nice with the glass front.
Bandit has a really intense look while flying; kinda like, "daddy, can I try it now?". Meanwhile, Bo is just like, "dude, let me hug you & you hug me back".
Took 3 tries, but it looks like another fun run in the back country. Glad you had a blast.

Hey guys, for those Northern Pike, try using a Johnson Minnow with a white (rubber skirt - if you can find one)skirt. Today, most skirts you can find are only vinyl. They just don't have the same great action that a rubber skirt has in the water. Some folks also used a white grub tail.
I use only the 1/4 oz. size. The lure is about 3" long and 3/4" wide. My father, brother, and I have tried all of the other colors and found silver gets the most strikes and catches the most fish. We always used a 6" steel leader. If you are fishing in an area where those baby's grow to 15+ pounds, , go with a longer leader (12").
This lure is a weedless lure. Frequently check the weedless barb to make certain is pushed passed the hook by about 1/16"-1/8"
You can cast these directly into the Lilly pads. The Northern will chase these things from the shallow out the deep. When retrieving, hold your rod tip high above your head (or stand up) as you retrieve the lure across the tops of the pads. Don't be in a rush to retrieve the lure. As long s you a reeling the lure in, it is laying on its back running across the pads so it won't get snagged on a pad. However, as soon as you stop retrieving the lure, it will flip back over and be hook down in the pads. I prefer throwing my minnow into the Lilly's and retrieve it back through the channels in the pads just below the surface.
If you miss a strike, throw the minnow back in the same place and try and try again. My brother actual lost his minnow earlier in the day, from a hard strike. However, when we came back through the same spot later in the day, he caught the pike that stole is his lure. When he brought the pike out of the water, there was his first Jonson Minnow hanging out of the other side of his jaw. You can't make this stuff up. A great fish story and I'm still telling it 50 years later.
When fishing shoreline with logs, downed trees, stumps, boulders, retrieve the lure so i just runs below the surface of the water. Deep enough so it doesn't leave a wake.
These lures are the best lures I have used to catch pike and pickerel. Are around dusk in the evening the hot action will keep you on your toes. Don't forget to keep those spoons nice and shinny with a decent silver polish at the end of each season. Bring EXTRAS! Because of the high action rate, you will lose some. Again, bring 3-4 extra lures and skirts.
    Have fun. You will!!
    Alan from NC

You guys have to be the cutest, funniest, most authentically cool couple ever.
I’m still laughing about the time a few videos back when Arielle tried to get on the deck before you put in the stairs. She got stuck, kinda like a beached whale, and desperately cried, “Eric.” Who came over and barely suppressing his laughter said, “I’m not sure what you want me to do here. Do you want to go up or back or what?”
And Arielle replied, “I don’t know.”
And now, “Eric. Think what you’re doing.”
“I’m just trying to live my life.”
That cabin turns you guys into a comedy duo. Thanks for taking us along. You guys make me smile more than anything or anyone I watch.

This is a wonderful video - I binged my way through your entire channel this year and it's honestly been a fantastic experience from start to finish. I even went back to re-watch the video of your arrival at the cabin and it's incredible how you transformed the place in so little time. You've been doing an amazing job of it and I have tons of respect for how self-sufficient you are. Keep up the great content!
Side note: Since you mentioned the rosehips, in Germany we use them for rosehip jam, which is the standard jam we put in jam-filled donuts... just in case you feel like baking anytime soon! ;-)

I would love to see a walk through of you getting your home set before you leave to head to the cabin? Do you have someone who takes care of your chickens or do you have an automatic feeder? What are some procedures you have in place to make sure you do not have to worry while you are away from home for a period of time.

I spent my younger years in Alaska, Fairbanks and Eagle River areas. I’m in grad school now and can’t wait to have the opportunity to move to Alaska and try my hand at off grid living. I’m a single mom so I worried about my son having just turned 2 when I got bachelors in the spring of 2021. By the time I graduate with my PhD, I’ll be around 30 and he’ll be around 8, which should be easier to manage a schedule and task delegation. I haven’t found any channels with single parents living off grid, thus far, this channel seems to be the most practical. Thank you for sharing knowledge, both failures and success in off grid living. Found your channel and fell in love during the start of the pandemic in 2020 while searching for content that was wholesome and reminded me of better times in my life. Keep up the good work!
