  • The 2002 Tour de France was a multiple stage bicycle race held from 6 July to 28 July 2002, and the 89th edition of the Tour de France. It has no overall winner-although American cyclist Lance Armstrong originally won the event, the United States Anti-Doping Agency announced in August 2012 that they had disqualified Armstrong from all his results since 1998, including his seven Tour de France wins from 1999-2005; the Union Cycliste Internationale has confirmed this verdict.
The event started in Luxembourg and ending in Paris. France was visited counter-clockwise, so the Pyrenees were there before the Alps. On average, the stages were shorter than in previous years, in an attempt to make illegal substances (doping) less necessary for the riders.[citation needed]
The favourite was Armstrong, at the time, winner in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The main opposition would probably come from the ONCE team with Joseba Beloki (3rd last year), Igor González de Galdeano (5th last year) and Marcos Serrano (9th last year), and from the Kelme riders Óscar Sevilla (7th last year, 2nd in last year's Vuelta a España) and Santiago Botero (8th last year). Other riders to keep in account for a high place in the final rankings were Tyler Hamilton (2nd Giro 2002), Levi Leipheimer (3rd Vuelta 2001), Christophe Moreau (4th Tour 2000) and Armstrong's team mate Roberto Heras (4th Vuelta 2001). Important riders who were not present were Jan Ullrich (2nd last year, injury) and Gilberto Simoni (winner 2001 Giro).

So why doesnt it bother me that Lance did use epo. Gee maybe because they all were. Just comes down on him because he was better than the rest that were using as well.

Exactly, I’ll always have my yellow towel. If everyone is doping, then it cancels out this factor. He’s a hero and a champion; I’m just ashamed at our media and the insiders ratting him out for ever trying to ruin it… all they did was try to tarnish the inspiration and motivation he gave me and many people… for me, they failed… he’s every bit the hero he once was.
When I hear ignorant people speak, it just makes me want to take their morning coffee, energy supplement, fruit, or whatever else that gives them energy, and watch them wilt at reality.

I'm at peace with most people not understanding what's what. They believe the news...and in the same breath pretend that they can't be fooled. You just have to shrug it off

I dont like him. Does that matter? Nope. Was he the best, all things considered ? Yup. Hell yes. He was an incredibly disciplined athlete.

This is how the commentators should have commentated,
"So today is the first real climb of the tour and we have Beloki and Azevedo did their first bloodbags and will have 2 left for the rest of the tour. Armstrong however kept it with epo for this one to save his 3 bloodbags for later stages. He will take the epo for this time where Botero will only use his first strychnine to only tightened tired muscles. Since there is only one of those allowed in the tour de france he will be out for the rest of the tour.
Leipheimer took some cortisone and used 1 out of the 3 bloodbags allowed this year and topped it of with some epo. He therefore is the favourite for this stage. One rider yet to be disclosed by the UCI is taken out the race he was caught with having 5 bloodbags in his possession, he denied everything while standing before a fridge with 5 bags showing. He said there were two of those that belonged to his dog who apparently had a rare blood disease. Why he would have those dog blood bags with him in the tour was answered by him as "I thought it might help my teammate who loosed his bloodbags but who looked a lot like my dog"
More news on that story later on.

Yes. He doped.... like most others he took meds to stay healthy during this INSANE race. He remains one of the best athletes that the sport ever saw. Discipline, strategy, focus, technique... it all adds up. Yes, sure, meds too.
I should add... most people dope to get their work done, starting with coffee in the morning. Even my aunt is taking meds that would get her banned if she was a cyclist. SHe's a secretary with back problems and insomnia. Her job is hard too. Sort of. Let's not talk about what hockey, basketball, football players take to heal faster from injuries... our heads would explode.
You have to see all the angles. Pro cycling is insane. The only ones entitled to complain about some riders using banned (by the dumbfook UCI) meds is riders who don't. Not the hysterical smear-merchant french press.
I will die on this hill. Thank you for listening.

My son told me he wants to be a pro cyclist when he grows up, how can i tell him he will have to lie and decieve and cheat to make his dream a reality, how do i tell him hard work and nutrition will not be enough. How do i tell him he will have to take steroids, EPO, testosterone, human growth hormone, cortisone, blood transfusions, he will have to pretend to have asthma so he can take salbutamol, he will have to become a man that cannot stand up and be counted in the full light of day, he must hide in the shadows and betray his morals and ethics.

Tell your son that if he is breathing heavy gulps of our polluted air all day every day there is a significant likelihood that he will develop asthma. Tell him that in this case he may be able to get a tue for an inhaler but that there is exactly 0 scientific evidence that salbutamol in inhaled form provides any performance enhancement at all. Tell him if he takes epo or any other banned substance he will get up to 15% performance enhancement which is huge, he may win 7 tour de frances but he will inevitably get caught and lose his entire net worth of up to $75 million in damages. You have exactly 0 evidence that anyone in the tour de france is on banned substances but apparently you think 0 evidence is enough to condemn someone just because they are winning. You obviously don't put any value on evidence but instead engage in wild speculation as if your apriori ponderings amount to facts.
Tell your son he has no chance of winning the tour de france because he wasn't born at altitude. Tell your son that in order to produce the amount of red blood cells that Chris Froome's body creates naturally because he was born at altitude he will have to take EPO if he hopes to have any chance to compete against people like Froome or Quintana who undoubtedly have a biological advantage over everyone who wasn't born at altitude.

Tell your son that it was part of the history like wars or bad things that makes new ways to changes, and fortunately that time passed away and all of those riders was so great because to be rider at that time was so fucking hard for many reasons. Tell your son that he can be rider and try to be one of the few people that can perform as an athlete just working hard and having the dream in mind. If for many reasons he can't, does not matter, cycling will be part of his life.
