Leo Major was a French Canadian man born in 1921. He probably didn’t think he was going to be more of a hero than the average soldier when he joined up with the Canadian Army at the start of World War II-supposedly he simply joined up because he wanted to show his father, with whom he had a shaky relationship, that he could do something to be proud of.

I’m Canadian, we studied the holocaust. How didn’t I learn about him till now? This guy needs to be in our textbooks. They don’t talk about Canada’s role in WWII enough
Leo Major kept his war life mostly secret, even from his family. It wasn't until DECADES later when a journalist knocked on the family home door to speak with Leo, did his family and the rest of Canada find out the extent of his bravery.

They tried to get a script accepted but no one in hollywood accepted to make the movie. Apparently it was to unbelievable for them.

It's too unbelievable to be told as a true story, there's actually a fair amount of stories like this that don't get told in the way they should, Roy Benavidez comes to mind. These should be our popular heroes not celebrities, ball players, and fictional characters.

Yep a hero! If my mind isn't doing me tricks his own family only found out in 1968 what he had done when a Dutch delegation finally found him after years of searching for him. After asking him why he kept all this to himself, he said something like "Well, nobody would believe me."
I read something similar from his son before he died of cancer.
In ways it is hard to believe all that he did. But we have records and such to prove it happened. As a Canadian this man is our badass of war. Should have got a VC in Korea.

He was in my first barracks after Boot Camp. Every day liberty call was announced over the 1MC at 1600. Invariably, at 1550 we would hear, "Seaman Spray to the quarter deck. Seaman Spray."

The recon mission had casualties. The invasion of the city, slated for the next day with an initial artillery barrage, instead had no casualties due to the few the night before that prevented the need for artillery.

If so, then it could be argued that the recon was the first step of the invasion.
This is not to say, of course, that all recon is part of an invasion, but that invasions do typically begin with some sort of recon.

On hill 335 he was calling airstrikes on himself then moving away from the position, also he broke his back at some point but went AWOL and rested up with a Dutch family for a while before returning to duty ............proper badass
That was around the time of the half track affair in Normandy.

Correction! He was actually calling artillery and mortar fire on his position every time the Chinese were on the verge of overtaking them, not air strikes! That being said, it's unfortunate how his insane Zwolè feat just overshadows how he found a way to input a real life cheat code to somehow retake and hold that hill despite facing 2 whole Chinese DIVISIONS.... being outnumbered by well over 1:2000
About the time he went AWOL : he actually managed to run away from the hospital with a broken back because the doctors were really going to send it back this time.

I visited Zwolle two years ago and was a bit surprised to see a Canadian Flag flying where I would expect to see a Dutch Flag. I had just arrived and was tired so I didn't look into it until the next day. I wish I had taken a picture then. That was when I learned of the story of Leo Major. As a Dutch Canadian, I was both proud and grateful.

Well, it didn't take long for Canadian, Aussie and Kiwi troops to find out that Monty was an idiot who didn't mind the shedding of blood as long as it wasn't British blood. Monty needlessly and recklessly sacrifices thousands of men from the aforementioned troops in some sick and twisted ways while accomplishing absolutely nothing. That is why, even today, commonwealth troops are wary of foreign generals commanding their ranks even if they are engaged together in fighting the same enemy.

Want to argue about it just go look up which of the allied armies spent the longest time fighting and were the only ones to fight alone during the war...

Lets be truthful though. The overall commander was Julian Byng... British. He was smart enough to use the troops he was given in the best, most effective way possible. He heeded their ideas and encouraged their initiatives. He didn't look down on them as mere colonial canon fodder. Pierre Burton wrote one of the great non-fiction Canadian war books about the battle. A must read.

From what I heard, French Canadians had a reputation of being ruthless on the battlefield. Hearing about this guy, I can understand why.
In WWI the 22nd Canadian Regiment the only French-Canadian regiment was so good, it was later (1922), given the title ; "Royal" by the British crown.

Finally! As soon as I heard of Badass Week, I was hoping Leo would make an appearance, and he did. Thanks!
You forgot a part of the story where he was helping a padre recover dead bodies and the truck they where travelling on rolled on a mine breaking Leo's back and killing the padre. He was in a field hospital waiting to go back to England with his war over when he escaped and rejoined his unit to continue the fight. He also called artillery on his own position in defense of the hill in Korea.
He was quite the character and is buried in a military cemetery in Pointe Claire(a burrough of Montreal). The city of Zwolle name a main artery after him and his story is very well alive there as he saved this beautiful city from being shelled by Canadian artillery that would of most likely cause lots of civilian casualties...RIP Leo Major.You earned it!
Zwolle (where I live) has an avenue named after him, called "Leo Majorlaan".

The men and women who fought in WW2, my dad and his generation, most of them are gone now, may they rest in peace. Those still living are deserving of respect. My dad was in the battle of the bulge. He drove an ambulance. A bullet pierced his helmet, grazed his scalp, and out the other side. Knocked his helmet off. He kept on driving. He didn't get a medal for it. He was on guard duty at a MASH unit, and he killed a German commando. He didn't get a medal for that either. He was just doing what needed done. I don't care what anybody says, that's fuckin badass.

You forgot to mention that while holding that hill, he was calling in mortar support basically on his own position (so close that the mortar team could hear their own shells exploding over the radio).... that is determination.

This man also later fought (not with guns fortunately lol) for Québec's independance from Canada. A true hero for us.

One can read between the lines that many of those German regulars saw the writing on the wall by 1944 and weren't going to resist a chance to be out of the war, even if they could only find one Canadian to usher them in the right direction.

Good to note, according to the Dutch Wikipedia article about him, he also single handedly captured multiple groups of around 10 Germans a time in the night he took Zwolle, only stopping sometimes to break in some house and rest a bit. He was indeed quite the bad ass.

Most countries have their own Leo Major during the war in terms of outstanding acts under fire. The British had John "Mad Jack" Churchill plus countless Commonwealth individuals, the U.S. had 2LT Audie Murphy and CAPT Benjamin Salomon (ranks of both at the time of the former's citation for the Medal of Honor, and the latter's death ), the Finns had Simo Häyhä and Lauri Törni (admittedly his actions are more remembered for the Waffen-SS and later the Green Berets ). The Germans and Soviets of course had their own, but their names do not come to me and some information on those individuals are more hearsay than actually documented.
Léo was born january 23rd 1921 in New Bedford, Mass. only because his father, a railroad worker had a temporary affectation there. The family were french-canadian from Montréal. They returned in Montréal on september the same year. Sa famille habite successivement au 1351 des Érables en 1924, au 4389 Chambord en 1935, puis finalement sur la rue Frontenac à partir de 1938. Au plaisir!

A hometown hero kind of totally unknown here in his own country....... Later in Korea war.. This guy and 17 other fellow soldiers stayed their ground facing 4 waves of China soldier attacks in 4 days... about 14000 Chineeses soldiers..!!!

Thank you so much. I am somewhat of a history buff. And a Canadian. I had never heard of Leo Major until watching a video about what nation's had the bravest soldiers. Leo Major was mentioned when talking about Canada's WWII effort. Found your video with more detail. This guy was unreal. Why he didn't win the Victoria Cross is beyond me. I second one comment below. Why hasn't there been a movie about this hero. Maybe we should use a little literary license and say he was from the US Midwest before moving to Quebec.

The incident in Zwolle was on April 14th 1945. Only 2 months prior (in February) his truck got damanged by a landmine. During that strike he landed on his back and broke several bones. And of course: he refused to quit his duty...
