    In this video:
Serving with the NYPD between 1923 and 1947, for over two decades John “Johnny” Broderick struck fear into the hearts of New York’s deadliest criminals working as a no-nonsense detective who wasn’t afraid to throw hands and kick bad guys through windows (literally). Over his long and controversial career, Broderick earned over half a dozen medals for valor, a nod from the president of the United States and the begrudging respect of the criminal underworld who, when they weren’t referring to him by various expletives, referred to him as “the one man riot squad”.

When Broderick retired he did so to a farm outside of Middletown N.Y. my mother lived next door to him and as a teenager she would cook meals for him and run errands. He was extremely generous and gave her a platinum watch, shortly before he died. He told everyone that she was the daughter he never had, and that he loved her dearly. My mother (and her family) adored him. It doesn't say here in this vid, but he was long since single when he moved upstate, and had women over quite a bit. And my mom used to make dinner for he and his dates so Broderick could serve them when they were alone.
My mom was absolutely devastated when he died, saying that he was one if the most caring, loving, protective people she ever met.
So much of movies and stories about him make him out to be like this, a one man wrecking crew, a brainless brute, a criminal, or just an all around terrible person. The truth was, it was a very different time, and the rules that played 100 years ago were totally different. He was an unbelievably tough man, who had flaws, but had a wonderful heart, and the man himself was loved by many for a reason.
Besides God, my mother only speaks glowingly of three men. Her father, the surgeon she worked for right after college (whom she adored and whom I'm named after) and Johnny Broderick. Three men in almost 80 years of life. That should say something that you won't get from a book, a movie, or a video.

Wow! This is a wonderfully touching personal story, and gives interesting new perspective on the video & the man it depicts.

Well, Simon did say that he was generally a down-to-earth man.
There was even a dialogue with Shor where he didn't want to meet an actor cause according to the dialogue, the actor would portray as him in the movie and wanted to know more about Broderick. He had a kid and he didn't want his kid to know that his/her father wasn't a role model outside of the house (even just smoking a cigar isn't upright for him xD).

No... He was neither. He only had "good press"... So the truth from this (if you ever learn to read something called sub-text) is EVERYONE INVOLVED WAS A PIECE OF SHIT.
Okay, Broderick had balls... Can't deny it anymore than you could deny the man had brains. He wasn't educated to even the average level and still managed a fairly lengthy career where the average was neither fair nor lengthy.
He still lived well beyond the means of any contemporary police officer. How? The son of a bitch was as crooked as any other. He was also tied just as tightly to the politicians who were crooked. Simple as that, he was just another fucking scum-ball picking and choosing his targets like any other mercenary.
"Good press"... The newspapers and media of the age were no different than now. They only care about selling papers. It's only news if it's good TV... So those pieces of shit did just as much harm to everyone around them in their so-called journalism... Character assassins by picking and choosing who gets issues swept out of view and who gets their ass plastered all over the front page across the country. It's no different today, just that today we have a few more "regular people" with cameras out there at least trying to keep honest people honest.
Finally, you know damn well that as many people as he might've helped, he injured unjustifiably. He ruined lives, and tore down competition because it didn't pay up to the sons of bitches who sent him money... (Remember the strikers?) Yet, he walked. He not only kept his detective badge for years past his record steadily coming to light as the embarrassment to the force that he was, he was (maybe forcefully) allowed to retire. That means a full pension on his ranch with horses and dogs... Rides of to the sunset, still the media's "darling hard-ass cop"... still the "hero"...
So no... Not a gentleman. How many of those strikers sent wives and kids to work because he "earned his pay" breaking the strike up by rampaging around like a lunatic destroying everyone in sight? How many of those picket lines had women among them? Any children come to visit "Pops" at an inopportune time? Anyone know? Anyone (even among you reading this now) even give a shit?
No. Probably not. So I reiterate. "No. Not a hero nor bad ass cop. Not a gentleman. EVERYONE INVOLVED WAS A PIECE OF SHIT.
Have a nice day with that. :o)

Some of you need to think back. I can remember my grandfather's 62 Rambler's speedometer went up to 120 mph, no joke. And at the time some bigger cars like Chevy Bonneville's, Ford Fairelane's, Buick Electra's etc. their speedometers went way higher, like 160 mph and If memory serves me correctly. Some went up to around 180 + mph ? Without seatbelts, like it would make much difference going at speeds like WW1 airplanes! I kinda recall back in 1963 an older kid, maybe 19, got a body damaged 62 Corvette Stingray with a removable hard top roof and I think that beasts speedometer went up to 200 or 210 mph. Then we can get into the mid to late 60's cars like the GTO, 442, Chevy SS Super Sport, Challenger, Rally Sport, Dodge Charger, Road Runner and many others. Even in stock form their speedometers went well beyond 100 mph. Could they all do that kind of speed? Uh... maybe. But most if worked on certainly could, no doubt.
