The more recent guy was surrounded by sandbags. I hope I would have the presence of mind to throw a sandbag over the grenade and dive away. That seems like a better strategy.
I went to school with someone who jumped on a grenade in Vietnam, saving his men. Unfortunately, he did not survive. Like these two he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

I had the absolute honor of meeting this badass and laying a wreath with him at the Iwo Jima memorial on Marine Corps Base Hawaii in 2004.

I think I might have a explanation for the dislikes and it is that Jack Lucas was the youngest of modern times he's not the youngest . That would be Will Johnston , aged 13 when he received his award , 2 years after his actions , aged 11 years . He was the drummer for the 3rd Vermont .

He is the youngest recipient in the 20th century. There was a 13 year old drummer durring the civil war that won the award.

Not exactly sure that's fair, the civil war had killed most of the older men at which point the army on both sides took whoever they could get.

One of his wives tried to kill him? She never asked him much about himself or he never told her anything.
Well,they had a child so she had to have seen &/or felt all that shrapnel in him,not to mention all the scars he'd have from that & the surgeries especially back then.....She was just stupid & greedy.

He was a marine.....that jumped on two grenades and survived a fall from a plane. Take your average Marine personality and amplify that by 2000 and you may understand why his wife tried to kill him. lol
Yes, i understand all that. Nevertheless you have to admit Simon totally glossed over something that is pretty much always an interesting story.
The story might have taken away from the guy's heroism. Just because you are a hero in war doesn't mean you aren't a complete twat to other humans in your personal life (I'm sure going through what he did certainly took its toll on his mental health). Still, the story would be interesting to hear.
So I guess victim blaming is okay as long as the victim is a male. Love the double standard and misandry in 2018. A woman tried to kill a human being and it gets glossed over and people on the internet comes to her defense and vilified a medal of honor recipient. I wonder if people would respond the same way if this war hero was woman and instead it was her husband that tried to have her killed. I think not.

There seems to be here a fine line between being a hero and having a serious problem - a kid itching to get into combat and throwing himself on grenades.

If you fought over it, you weren't in it. Lava also can't cut, but if it did, I don't think it would suddenly stop being able to cut after 15 minutes. :P

For me, this was a tear jerker...smh. Talk about a selfless act, these two guys were blessings, unto the lives they saved, indeed. Much RESPECT unto them both. RIP(Jacklyn H. Lucas).

I had the honor of meeting Jack in 2005 while on a military historic tour in the Pacific, Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was a great man and very fun to hang out with and listen to his stories.

I read about this a long time ago, its crazy that once he got to fight, he fought in one of the toughest battles the US had to face, Iwo Jima.
I interviewed Jack Lucas in 1995. What a guy! He owned Lucas Meats in Maryland. He sold his company and moved back to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to take care of his mom. A guy you would want to buy a beer! RIP

Do you understand that he fought for the Finnish alliance with Germany? He was a fascist weapon, not a hero to anyone.
The Finns were NOT in an alliance with Germany at that time. He was fighting against Russian aggression into his homeland. He is still a national hero in Finland, and a hero to anyone who loves freedom.
Kirill Kokorev He's a hero here in Finland. Only reason why Finland ever sided with Germany, was because no-one else would help us defend our country against the invading soviets.
I think the soviets also carpet bombed an entire forest to try to kill him and failed.

One mistake - only one of the grenades Lucas jumped on exploded. The other was a dud. His Medal of Honor citation is now sealed into the hull of USS Iwo Jima. Semper Fi!

I read about him and I’m surprised you missed this fact Simon. One of the reasons he didn’t die from the grenade blast, right under being incredibly lucky, was that only one of the grenades went off. The other was a dud.

You don't enlist as a lieutenant. You commission. However, after earning the MOH, one can simply be frocked to 1LT with a direct commission. So now you found out something else.

@A8HBU Two women and a man; his wife, his daughter and his daughter's fiance. Both his daughter and the man were 19 at the time.
From what I can tell, they tried it because of money. By that point, he was a rather successful business man in the beef retail and readily met with every President from Truman to Clinton.

I don't think they could charge him with deserting because he just joined in with a different Marine unit. And he was running to the guns not away from them.I'm sure he could have been charged with other crimes but not desertion. Today I'm sure some suck ass would charge him with crimes for what he did. And they may have charged him back then if it were not for his actions.

17 year old marine, thousands of miles from home, under fire from enemy combatants, sees a grenade and hugs it, then another drops near. That is one hell of a in for a penny, in for a pound moment.

In his book named Indestructible, he talks about having his gun jam and when he looked down to unjam it he saw the grenades.

Jacklyn Lucas, Simo Hayha and Kyle Lucas were all dipped in the River Styx when they were children.
During the ad his undershirt changed to red. I only paid attention because he said in the making of video that he filmed those separate and had to get the shirt he was wearing in the video that's going to have the ad in it.
