I really think this camera is going to change the game for beginners and expert users. I have full frame cameras all the way down to m43 and this is going to be hit.
I think its a perfect upgrade from the zve10. You can use the same lenses but you get image stabilization, 10 bit, 2 card slots and weather sealing and longer battery life, without giving up the small light weight form that was the reason i sold my dslr and went for a mirrorless system.
Welp I’m sold, this is the perfect companion to my FX3. This was the review I’ve been waiting on thanks Peter great as always.
I'm an APS-C Sony shooter and I'm excited about this camera. Been considering going Full-Frame because I thought that maybe Sony would be killing off the APS-C line and with the FX30 I don't have to upgrade and get to still use all my APS-C lenses. As soon as it's available I'm getting it.

I've got a FS7, and the FX30 would be such a great companion for it. A much better idea for me than buying a FX6 right now. (fingers crossed a FX60 comes out one day?? A FX6 body with a FX30 sensor in it)

For the kind of work I do at this time, and my limited budget for gear, APS-C was what I chose a few years ago with the a6400. I upgraded from a Lumix G85 system. I've invested in good APS-C lenses and built a small, mobile set up. I spent $$ on good lights, a good recording monitor, good filtres etc. So, the release of the FX-30, for me, is a huge deal. I can take advantage of the gear I already own BUT get an upgrade in performance.
For people like myself the prospect of getting "cinema" standards for $2300 (in Canada) is better than spending 4x that to get an a7siii, a7iv or FX-3 system set up. Better tools at an affordable price point is always a win.
Hey man I also have an a6400 and I am kinda in between uprgrading into fullframe or fx30. Can you please share your experinece with your fx30 (if you got it). Especially compared to a6400. Thanks
@@OnurTemur I have not yet gotten an FX30 .. I did have the chance to get one in hand at my local shop and am still very interested in getting it and hope to have it sometime this year. Sorry I couldn't give any more insight than that.

This is the perfect camera for me to switch from Cannon to Sony. I'm going to pair it with a Metabones Canon EF to Sony E-Mount speed booster and keep my Cannon glass. It will be my first step in crossing over to the light side 😂

It's a great start for young filmmakers and a step up for older filmmakers who may miss the internal filter and viewfinder for extreme light conditions the most.
I'm still waiting for the AX800, but since I suspect it won't come, I'll probably go for the FX30.
New setup looks crispy!! Loving it. The fx30 would’ve been great for my first camera but now that I have the a7iv, I can’t easily go back to aps-c
I have the A7iv and I think the FX30 would make a great B cam, as you said. I think the price point is pretty dang good for what you get.

I think I’m going to save my ducats for this camera in early 2023. I wanted the FX3, but I already have the APSC lenses… so this is just value add for me instead of having to reinvest in all new glass. I’m looking forward to it since I’m still very much a beginner.

I do like the FX30 to go along with my FX3 for its ability to get that extra reach since the FX3 can't do APS-C mode when in 4K.

Been waiting for this review. Ya it would be hard to go to APS-C when being spoiled with full frame. But dang Sony did. A great job with pricing it competitively. Great video as always!

I think the Arri Alexa 35 has something to say about your disdain for the Super 35 format. If you’re a film maker into vintage cinema lenses having an s35 sensor is a huge advantage.
Apsc is a still photography term. Odd to use that term when discussing a video camera.
I think Sony Venice has something on the Arri Alexa 🤷🏻👀
I don’t know what is the matter of the crop factor,many cinema cameras are super 35 and they have lenses that produce the same effect on screen!

Cool new camera, thanks for giving us your take and who you recommend it for. I agree, if you don't already have full framethat is cool. BUT this is a sweet camera to get into the world of film making.
As a sports videographer the crop that everybody is concerned about is a very welcome thing for me. It means alongside clear image zoom I could buy the affordable but very good 18-105 f4 and shoot football highlights.

It’s weird that you say you felt limited by the crop factor. I mean, this camera is meant for crop sensor lenses so of course using the full frame lenses would affect your focal lengths and field of view. It’s a strange complaint to make as I’d assume most people getting this camera would be putting crop lenses on it and not full frame lenses.
That's why i said I AM using full frame. If you use Crop lenses to begin with, there's no issues =)

As a beginner video creator who uses a GoPro, I think I'd still take a A7III over the FX30 because I'm into photography as well and can't budget two cameras.

Nice specs and nice price caused to APS-C... so we have to do a nice research for the APS-C lenses. But what about vs A7iv? It's a lose-lose situation... FF on A7iv but 4K 50p crop and 4K 100p 1,6 x crop on FX30. I am having a headache.

I've been saving up for the FX-3 and I know, it's still the real deal. But considering my needs for a foreseeable future, this camera came just right, and I don't need the full frame for that. Even with the top handle it will still leave some money on the table for a lens or two. I also live in Sweden so the $2200 for the combo is $3100 here, the FX-3 is $5000. My calculation is done 🙂
Why all these cameras are way more expensive there in Sweden? Doesn't make sense to buy from other countries as a traveller or from Amazon?

Beginner videographer here. What is your opinion on using FX30 for darker, cloudy, dusk, predawn nature videos in forests? Could I get enough shadow details with F1.4 or 1.8 lens using ISO2500? Is the FX3 or A7S III full frame sensor significantly different in these scenarios? Much appreciated!

Couple things. S35 is Hollywood. You want full frame go shoot photos. Try putting any set of legit cinema glass on that full frame sensor and tell me how that goes. You’re not getting 16 bit because there isn’t a recorder that can do it. Atomos is the only one in the game and you’ll get 12 bit. That being said, this camera will change the game for beginners and that’s super cool!
Couple things. Sony Venice is full frame, FX6 is full frame, both used in feature film production. Just because something has been a standard, doesn’t mean it will be in the future. That being said, i shoot full frame and talk from that point of view.
@@PeterLindgren1 Arri has been the standard for years and remains such. Let’s look up what’s been shot on the S35 Alexa’s shall we. Don’t make a debate where there isn’t one.

It's hard for me to touch an aps-c camera and not make a face like I just bit a lemon, but I guess it has its place in the video world, I have some aps-c glass and it makes focus pulling that little bit easier if you're shooting manual.

Hmmm... interesting ... I also shoot FF.. then I picked up this APS-C body .... I have no problem with "crop" issue at all... I see difference between FF and CS as switching different focal length lenses on FF cameras: you put on telephoto lens - and it is a tight angle.... then you put on 11mm lens, and it is wide angle... Your brain adjusts accordingly ... So if I use CS body, I just know exactly what angle of view I'll get ... also, I don't mind taking a step back... So Crop Sensor is absolutely zero issue to me...
The rolling shutter is SO much better than the 6000 series.
I like the fx3 a LOT, but not sure if I would go for the apsc sensor if I didnt have to. 😊
APSC sensors are still just as good as full frame, don't count them out 😉

I have bought your Iut for vlog, i would like to know how to use it correctly, to see if you can help me in any way with that, I have put my Sony a6600 in Slog 2, I have put all the configuration that you suggest but my camera starts from ISO 500 and I see that yours you have in ISO 160 how is it possible? so I can't get 1.3 on the light exposure.

I was literally going to buy the a7iv yesterday upgrading my Sony a6300 , but didn't had the time to go to the store and today I got your notification and clicked instantly, now I think I should wait for this camera since I have a couples apsc lenses, but I also have access to full frame lenses so what camera do you think I should get
I wouldn’t be looking at this camera if Sony hadn’t released that 11mm f1.8. I have a full frame Sony with no options for a small lightweight 16mm prime with AF, and front filter threads. All the APS-C lenses are available now to shoot any full frame equivalent I would want, so it’s starting to make sense. I’d hold onto my FF wildlife lens and my FF 35.
perfect small time TH-camr camera! once you have monetize your channel and wanted something better to up the production level yet the prices of full frame lenses can be intimidating sometimes!

Only drawback for me is I cant use a flash at those times when I need to shoot stills.

At least affordable. Was getting things ready to buy the FX3 but after adding on dummie battery and cf express cards and reader plus npf Batts and some attachments I was at 5k . Now this fx30 is spooling this down to 3k and honestly 4k 120fps with an aps-c ? Dude that's awesome for that price.
But is not good 4k 120and its with heavy crop on top of the apsc crop

I’d be happy to ditch my current Canon EOS R + Sony ZV-1 setup for a FX-30 for video and an used A6400 or similar for stills. ”Downgrading” to the APS-C doesn’t bother me but spec-wise the FX30 ticks all the boxes I’d like to have in a video camera and A7SIII is way too expensive. IBIS and decent rolling shutter and first and foremost reliable autofocus matter for me more than ultrasuper shallow dof.

Sony better slow down with their new camera releases. They're just literally flexing their muscles now over many competing camera manufacturers.

I Doubt it. The FX3 has been out for 4 years at this point and is still an amazing camera.

Hey, I’m I’ve been photographing sports on a Sony a7riii and the photos have been amazing . I’m looking to shoot video as well . Would you advise me to get the a7s3 over the fx30? I’m hesitant because the fx30 doesn’t shoot continuous just single shots and it has no view finder. i figure sometimes in the mix of filming sports i may want to catch something in action photo wise and i see that the s3 can shoot 10frames per second . I like that both these camera put out the same output video wise .
I’m really not sure on the choice . I’d appreciate some advice
it's not crippled at all. Nobody is using the Mech Shutter on their FX3. I just wish it had a stacked censor BUT for the price, holy cow this looks awsom.

Is it really fair to call this an entry level camera? It's marked Cinema line with 16-bit raw video output for an external recorder :-) In my eyes that with the price specs makes this more like an entry level camera for a professional cinematographer or commercial shooter. Or perhaps that is the target group for your videos?(I still enjoy them if that is the case)
I consider myself entry level, I use a camera(or rather a bunch, I have a hoarding complex) to record my content. A camera with a price like this would be a waste of money. I would be so much better using the budget that would allow this purchase to buy a more price friendly camera and using the rest of the budget for investing in stuff to film with it. The ZV-1 and ZV-E10 would be more like entry level to me... Still much to pricey for me though ;-) I'm using a GH4 and A7S(1), I'm probably hobo level on my camera budget...
And a sidenote. 1800$ sounds reasonable for what this is but have you checked out the prices here in our beloved country? 26000 kronor utan XLR modulen, 31000 med!? Usch.
I'm not a fan of full frame cameras. I've got a Sony AIV with a Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 and I bought 4x Sony ZV-E10 for multicam projects with Sigma 18-50 F2.8 DC DN super compact lenses. Honestly, I'm tired of carrying the weight of my full frame Sony and I'm now only taking my ZV-E10 with me and I'm super happy with the compact size and light weight. I'm seriously thinking about selling my Sony A7 IV and getting out of full frame forever. I'm more in live event productions where 10bit don't matter and at a time where smartphone cameras are norrowing the gap each year to professional gear, I find that even APS-C is big and heavy 🙂
The downside with this though is that it is the same size… the APSC lenses on the other hand would be a big relief!

I am not to fan of aps-c sensors. I think I would rather go for the fx3 myself, but as you said, for an entry level camera it is probably a good way to go👍
APS-C is not entry level - if you're making feature films. It's been the standard super 35 since the beginning of time. Most ALEXAS' are ASPC-C and they are certainly not entry level.

@@stevenuseda6317 For all intents and purposes, yes they are. Just like how Canon APS-C is smaller than Sony APS-C, every company has slightly different sized Super35 sensors. Some are smaller and some are larger than Sony APS-C, some are exactly the same size.
Hi this is going to be my first camera and I want to film podcast, short films/skits and music video. Should I get the fx30 and something else? My budget is $2000. Also I will be shooting little to No photography
This makes things harder for me, i already decided buy A7IV and move to full frame world. But if i can continue using crop sensor and my lenses getting better colors and 240fps/1080p option this maybe is my next camera.
I would aim for this. You can still use the full frame lenses on it. Way cheaper than the FX3!

Just take the focal length and multiply by 1.5 👌🏼

Only crippled with the Sensor. Otherwise, a very affordable APS-C cinema camera for new filmmakers. I'm so jelly right now becaue they are going to be getting a superb camera for $1,800 bucks. That's a great deal that allows you to get lenses afterwards. Amazing job sony

Crippled is not exactly correct word. It's has some additional pull on lens view, so one could choose a wider lenses if it bothers them. Or enjoy that extra power on the tele or zoom. But the user is not crippled.
I wouldn't call an APSC sensor a cripple, especially when some of the best cameras out there are APSC/S35. And some Hollywood DP's actually prefer S35 over Full Frame
Outside of sub 20mm focal lengths, there's nothing that an apsc can't do that a ff can. Most Hollywood movies in the past 20 years were shot in super 35 (apsc).
Less Noise and mote framing options. Just because something has been done in the past, it doesn’t mean that it’s the future!

I think it's potentially a very successful camera because it can appeal to everyone from people who want to start TH-cam or get into wedding videography business to those who already have some camera gear and just need a second or third camera, as you mentioned.
I would like to ask about the rolling shutter because other APS-C cameras suffer from it quite severely. Is it comparable to the FX3/A7S III?

Do people really do lens math when it comes to APS-C/S35? I came from an APS-C Camera and I never did lens math with lenses. Plus as you said, APS-C lens math gets a bit ridiculous.
If you use 24mm fullframe, the FOV becomes a 35mm basically. Whenever I use full frame glass on an APSC, I have to rethink my lens use 🤷🏻

As someone with the A7iv, I'd say yes. Tho I'd take the path of upgrading from the A7iv to FX3 and then using the A7iv as a B

I realise that people in the trade need full frame cameras. Other people, like me, are a bit reluctant to mortgage our grand children to have the latest tech. Great review for the rest of us.
The APSC is a great system for everyone, but for me personally I want to have the absolute best tools available for my work!
