  • Mud baths all around, the farmer explains why we farm river bottoms that flood, Elmo gets moved, and we visit a Gleaner graveyard. Oh, and my crib is near completion! A lot still going on here, some good, some bad, but in the end all worth it. More

When you douse the charcoal with fluid, let it sit for couple of minutes so it absorbs most of it before lighting.

I'm from Manitoba, Canada, and I love watching your videos. You're down to earth and have problems like most people. Your husband looked like a crusty, snarly person at first but he seems ok now, lol. He has more patience than I have fixing machinery but having a calm, beautiful wife for a helper is a definite bonus for him

Aw man, guys like Roy are worth their weight in gold, his knowledge on parts and how they behave or how best to get at parts for repair work is better than any owners manual, pity he doesn’t run a “how to fix Gleaners” TH-cam channel. Great episode

Congratulations on the crib! It is coming along nicely and looks great! Roy seems like a nice man and would be fun to talk to. I bet he has some stories to tell! Lawrence is right about the Morton Salt. I am his age and I have seen that slogan on the box too. I think the reason they had that slogan is because salt, like sugar, will sometimes clump up when it rains and is humid. But Morton would say that their salt will pour even when it is rainy and humid outside. Thus the slogan, "when it rains, it pours." Not sure if they still have that slogan on the box, but they do still have the picture of a little girl with an umbrella on the box. Hope your fields will dry up so ya'll can replant if you need to. Keep smiling! I saw this quote the other day and thought it would apply. "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain."

YES Meredith, it does say on the morton salt container "WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS". Just a suggestion would be to get a drone which would be very useful in surveying land and damages and would be entertaining to watch the cows running across the pastures when they are called and could assist in locating animals when searching for them. I do so enjoy your videos and probably spend too much time watching them. God bless you all in your endeavors.

Just back tracking into some of your older videos. Always fun to hear your descriptions on things and your Family too. Lawrence talks more in this one than any other I have seen up to this point. Still talks just like my Grandpa and Uncle Dwayne used to. I just love it. Brings me back to so many great memories of being on the Far. Never have seen so many Gleaners in one place, that was an amazing place.

Meredith the easiest way to light charcoal is using a Weber Charcoal Chimney starter. Using a a dry fuel starter. Try it they work like a charm plus no taste of the fuel transferred to your food. White hot charcoal in 20 minutes or less.Your videos are fantastic enjoy watching you and your family working, playing and managing the farm with all the challenges. You certainly are a great example of a cohesive family.

Did a beautiful job putting it back to use.
Austin is such a sweet girl. She is really earning her keep.
I know it might not feel like it right now with the flooding and loss from the fields but you are definitely rich at heart and a family that has laughter is always ready for anything.

I like your crib because it matches the farm and your uniqueness. Many people pay for those mud baths, but you don't need them because you rock at 41. I figured that the farmer weighed the risks of planting in the river bottoms and determined that it was worth it. The Gleaner graveyard was interesting as was Roy and the owner(Mr. Force?). Reminded me of the automobile junkyards where I used to go shopping for used parts. Another fantastic video, Meredith, thank you.

If you take an old 3 lb coffee can and punch a bunch of holes around the bottom edge near the bottom with something like a "church key" is what we called them used to open beer or pop cans. Open up both ends of the can so like a cylinder, set it down in the fire pit. Fill it up with the charcoal soak it with lighter and light it at the bottom thru the holes you punched it will stay lighted an evenly in a shorter time. I doubt if I am the first to say this or some iteration of it.

Hi Merideth. In an attempt to make you laugh through the the hard times they say that if you play a country song backwards you get the truck back the dog back the farm back maybe even the flood waters will go down and the ground will dry out. Worth a shot :) Lawrence has got to be the calmest guy I have ever seen in "way of life" situations like you are experiencing. Looking at things and planning on with the "well this happened so now we will do this" and not get angry waiting for the cavalry coming to aid him takes a tough man. I don't believe a lot of men have it like he does when things like what you are going through happen, but you are the poster of what it is like to have an encourager behind the head of the family. That is the anchor for the ship. Oh BTW hope your finger is better. Put some butter on it. Butter cures everything :)

Hello, thank you for the video, I always wait for the videos impatiently because I enjoy it and if my lady allows for the flood that invaded your land here in Morocco we use large rocks on the sides of the land and at the edge of the river to install and we are planting some desert bushes to limit the advance of sand to the agricultural lands Greetings to you and Mr. Bernard and the whole Family and thanks

When you start charcoal soak it like you did then let it stand ten minutes to soak in and soak it again a little and light the charcoal then it will catch and burn. You got to let the lighter fluid soak for 5 or 10 minutes and 10 is better. Good luck and if need help invite me over for supper.

So glad you have your "office." Everyone needs "their" place to go and just push the rest of the world out for awhile. I'm in mine right now and I'm just as happy as you are. Thanks again for allowing us into your life/lives. :)

I know of two houses that started on fire when they were trying to light the charcoal grill too close to the house and set the eaves on fire

An old metal coffee can works great for a starter chimney.

I am not quite sure where you are in North Carolina, some where near, Virginia border. Since I have been watching your videos on TH-cam, I look at the weather at the border of those to states, so I can see on the radar what you might be getting! Thanks for sharing these videos with me. I really enjoy watching them, even the sad ones.
