I played yesterday with a guy that did exactly this and I thought it was kind of strange. Right now I'm watching you give this advice. I am definitely going to try it out today and will let you know.
I resisted doing this for quite some time until I was so sore or injured after a range session that I couldn't swing for weeks at a time. My medical condition and, now, my age is now overruling my pride, and I have a slightly closed stance with a slightly flared lead foot. Just makes everything a little simpler and less painful.
This makes a ton of sense. Observe the set up stance of baseball batters -- some are closed; others open; most in some neutral range. It's whatever is the most comfortable to them to make contact with the ball.
I’m only 37 and have a horrible lower back from playing hockey. When i drop back my right leg a bit it helps tremendously. None of us are going pro lol so do what makes you feel comfortable and no pain.
Great tip...i suffer with arthritis in my hips and mobility is a massive problem in my ability to swing fully...will definitely be trying this on the range
I told Shawn Clement he should contact you because of how similarly you both approached the swing and game in general and he told me you went to study with him for some time. I guess it's just further testimony for how well this all works. Really enjoy your channel.
Have been doing this for years now, but also use a separated grip. You will find balance and weight shift is much easier (pretty much like taking a step). I keep the same stance for draws, pitches, chips, fades and flop shots, and can attest it's much easier to do this for practically every shot. Keep the ball back in your stance a bit, and you'll find it tremendously easy to hit the ball well. Make sure to use an intermediate point for aiming to target. Thanks for posting this...I felt self-conscious at first when starting this stance, but taking other people's money cleared that right up. Golf reflects all your strengths and infirmities, and to use a cliché, "there are no pictures on the scorecard".
Alex. Another great video. I have been using that approach and another benefit is a slightly improved chance of drawing the golf ball. Jason Duffner style. Simon
Magic video Alex and so well explained this technique will help provide more turn but more importantly less pain so well done you as always try to make it simple for any age or standard 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏌️🏌️🏌️
Well I did try it and my feedback is that it doesn't really make any difference at all, rather it feels quite awkward. Maybe if you are already a good ball striker you might get a few extra yards because of a slightly better (negligible) rotation. Well I gave it a try anyway so thanks.
I think the point of it is to reduce pain and injury, not get better distance. As a new golfer who's overweight and not flexible, I'm sore for days after playing so I'm looking forward to trying this to see if it helps.
I’m a senior golfer that struggled with mobility which equals no power. When you drop the right foot back, do you keep your hips parallel to the target line?
I’m a fair bit over weight (am working on it) but I recently took up golf and I absolutely love it but the massive issue I’m having is my swing is rubbish due to my weight and I’m not getting any distance at all, I play with mates but it’s embarrassing being that much worse is there any recommendations you could make?
Welcome ! Some things that might help.. get longer clubs if possible. Flare your toes out at a dress to help lower rotation and really just focus on the feeling of skipping a stone and allowing the arms to extend through impact. A couple of recent videos on speed and effortless swing will help a lot. We can do a great deal without all the need for big rotation and full backswings etc. Hope that helps and let me know!
The worst mistake I ever made was being 60+ and trying to swing like a PGA tour player. My body can no longer move like it did 40 yrs ago.. This tip is what I do off the tee but will now practice it with irons. Well done....
I'll give that a go next time I play. I'd like it to improve my distance as well. I only hit a 7 iron 100 yards. I'm a pensioner and only started playing last summer. Any tips on improving distance ?
That is a good tip and I've done that some. The only thing is I swing so much from in to out, it can occasionally result in a ball goin' hard right. For some one that tends to go out to in probably would have great success with this. Your thoughts?
A great tip...but I am totally confused. Steve Johnstone has recently introduced me (through TH-cam videos) to the Eureka drill, which involves having the left foot pulled back!? That aids hip rotation and follow through. I guess I will have to try both and see which one works for me, as lining everything up straight is definitely NOT working.
We have an old video on that. It's what works for you. If you feel you struggle to turn and what more rotation.. try this. If you feel you don't but like the open through swing.. do that! :)
i have cerebral palsy on my left side and have a weak left ankle do to having it broke six or more times. Because of my cerebral palsy, I lack balance on my left side, therefore i have difficulty following through on my swing. what can I do to improve my follow through?
Hi and it’s great to hear that you are playing and indeed looking to improve. The lesson I think that would help a lot is the one published a couple of days ago. Setting with lead side leg open and a change in downswing. Check it out there and ask any questions there
i'm 64 now...bad left shoulder that restricts back swing. i have to over engage my core to hit the ball out of my shadow. i have tried pulling the right foot back. 30yrs ago it would have helped work a driver R to L. now...it just goes str8 right. wth?
I play once a week at best and that's slowly turning into once a fortnight. U just cant play this game to any kind of level other than rubbish when u play so little

As a 72 years old I find the video very informative and I am going to try it.Thank you very much.

Its been a year. Did the closed setup help your mid iron shots?

Great points! Ball back a couple of inches is key. We cover that in other videos. And the Intermediate point is a must for all shots for all golfers!

Super!
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf would you move the ball slightly further back as well, just brushing the grass giving the clue as to club release

I will try this, makes sense as you describe it.
Thank you! I will try this!!
Please do!

Do t try and force it. Allow the weight of the club to help and focus on getting through

You don’t want to let them close too much but it’s ok if they follow the feet a smidge

Supple wrists and heavy arms feeling. This should help too. We also have theartofsimplegolf.com/senior-swing-system-series

That can happen yes. But if aware of shoulder and hip line etc should not be an issue. If they all point right, yes.. more likely.
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf agreed thx brother👍

And....you could add the Gary Player "step through" at the end for even more freedom
Indeed you could!
I don't struggle with mobility, I'm just lazy. I keep it short and compact minimal movements and try and just pop it down the middle.

You may just be pointing shoulders and path to far right. Also, clubs these days are designed to curve less.

THe main thing is to enjoy and just swing simple and don't worry to much about technique etc
If its so simple why are there so many videos?
