Recently back to golf after retiring. Tried to use the swing I had in my youth and all I got was endless hip and back pain. Tried this and no pain. Bonus, I'm hitting longer cleaner shots than before. Awesome video.
A question I have, for senior swings and it is hard to telll, how much are you turning your chest/ torso in both the backswing and follow through? I tend to use all arms but am incorporating more rotation but it doesn’t appear you do. If you (yourself as I appreciate your teaching) have other videos on swing thoughts? Thank you.
With some range time, actually started to see the positive results of this swing at 74 yrs young. The actual energy built in the wrist cock shows up in distance. A simple swing that is repeatable. Tks Mr Montague.
This might be the simplest and most efficient swing thought video that I’ve seen yet! Swing from here to here and the ball just gets in the way! Awesome!
I know this is an old video but I came across this lesson on You Tube when I typed in a " golf swing for a senior golfer" and your video came up I watched it at least 6 times yesterday and today when to the driving range and went really slow with a pitching wedge and after a few balls and repeating your swing, it all clicked in and worked wonderfully on every club I tried and so thank you so much for your lesson.
I remember watching Lawrie quite a few years ago, (with short hair!) brilliant then, brilliant now! This instruction is so straight forward and now I’m a senior golfer, it’s now my go to video to watch over any other instructor. Thanks Lawrie. Cheers from Adelaide.
OMG! I can't wait to try this out! I have literally been in tears because of my lack of distance.(There's no crying in GOLF!) I have been self taught and just had my first two lessons at 67, last month... I still have NOT picked up any additional yardage on my drives or fairway woods. I have been stretching and trying to increase my flexibility, but lifting sleeping grandchildren, etc has taken a toll on my lower back and I know I am afraid at times that am going to hear that ratchet sound no matter how well I've warmed up. I didn't really pick up a club until my late forties. My problem I've felt was I have NEVER had that "snap" at the bottom of my swing that others have. I always thought it was a secret and honestly, even tho' I'd excitely share EVERYTHING I learned with anyone...I thought the reverse was not true. So I was ready to give up something I really love because I just couldn't score well. It hurts to hit 3 really solid shots(for me) and have my husband say, "Wow, it's too bad you are still out and can't get on in regulation." Since I play with mostly men, (I am the only woman on my husband's municipal league, so I am a decisive player, no slow play) they will always say, encouraging things like, "Your short game is really good". And I know they enjoy my company as much as I enjoy theirs, but when all is said and done, "I want to score better." Sorry, this is so long, but I thought you should know, even a year after you posted this video...I saw it and it encouraged me. I can't wait to try it. And I wanted to say, "Thank you."😉
Thank you Phyllis and please let us know how you go - also feel free to go to www.golfuniversity.tv/seniorgolflesson and we will aim to create a video lesson specifically for you
I'm not only a senior golfer (70) but a beginner senior golfer. After 35 years hiking and backpacking time for something new. These are great tips as I have a weaker left leg and have some flexibilty issues as well.
Laurie, You know when your over the target when others imitate you. I had a lesson with my local pro last week . It was like listening to you. I bet he watched still
Took this to the range tonight went to the 10 finger grip. Strike was better with a bit more work sure my ballstriking will be better. After years on building sites my mobility has got so bad just got to learn not to get to quick thanks from a overweight 59yr old golfer

This is the best video I have watched. Your teaching style is one of a kind. Simple to understand without all the long winded explanations of most instructors. Thank you. I’m a 66 year old senior that has had 3 lumbar back surgeries. The last being a fusion. So I’m dealing with limited mobility. This should be a great improvement for me to work on. Your explanation and your example provided such a clear understanding of what the golf swing should look like. I can’t wait to get to the range and start working on this. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless, Jeff Stone
Great comments! Lawrie Montague, you are the teacher of the decade! Just got back from the range and the swing you taught us has proven a great success. No loss of distance at all. Wow...simply wow
Thank you Bill - glad we good be of help :) and glad you are feeling successful with your swing - spread the word and feel free to join us in the Search 4 Scratch Program at www.search4scratchprogram.tv/search4scratchprogram
This absolutely works. I'm 81 and had cervical surgery 10 months ago, replacing my C3. Needless to say, my golf swing was a shadow of itself. I could barely hit the ball and was exhausted after 9 holes. I've adopted your swing ideas and I'm loving it. I'm not back to where I was 10 years ago, but I'm competitive, not fatigued, and I'm playing 18 hole rounds. You have saved my golfing life.
Follow up: I went out to the golf range yesterday and for the first time I did a routine of taking a few half swings from half way back to half way though before in repeatable motions before addressing the ball. And what a difference!!! Not trying to hit the ball, but rather, concentrating on start to finish with a hinge at top (wherever that was) to my finish, and basically having the ball just in the way of the golf motion. Just the sound of contact on the ball was so different, quiet and smooth with the ball bouncing off the club in height and distance. I still chunked and hit the ball thin but the consistency (which I never had) was starting to develop. I did not try to swing for distance, just start to finish. Without sounding like a fabricated endorsement, this was the single best advice I've had for my swing.

I have watched 100,s of golf swing videos over the Covid period and this is, without doubt, the BEST instructional video I have seen. If us Seniors, 70 years old or more, cannot get their swing working better after seeing this then give up the game now. I am really sincere in this as it cannot get easier than this. Thank you Lawrie, much appreciation from an 80 year old. still enjoying this wonderful game.
I watch you and other videos like your and I try to pick up a pointer or two. The most impressive pointer from yours was, to make sure the hand end of the club goes toward the ball and not the club head. Thanks, Preston
This is my second comment after developing this swing using this method. I played today at Highland Oaks RTJ club, in Dothan Alabama USA. I was able to hit 13 of 18 greens in regulation, with many greens being elevated or below elevation. Hitting another three greens and the golf ball rolling off onto the fringe, and in one instance rolling off and back down the hill thirty yards. After settling down putting I was able to keep my score at one over par the last 12 holes. The greens were 13 on the meter and lightning-fast so the first six greens I three-putted four greens. The tee to green improvements using this method as a senior golfer is awesome. Early recognition of green speeds, grass types, and putting stroke variations are what will improve my score. The claw grip, Phil Michelsen's style, has proven that keeping the ball online is imperative. The last twelve holes with a one-over-par are proof of that, it seems to take the right hand out of the equation. Golf is fun again. Thanks and blessings to all of your staff.

Hi Lawrie, so nice of you to distill the swing into such an understandable few moves. I do think it's the way to go--I'm going on 77 and while I'm in good shape for my age I can't possibly do what I see on tv. One question, can you explain what you mean by moving the handle past the ball? Is that a conscious move in the downswing and if so wouldn't that leave the face too open??
Thanks Rick and good question - first of all try it and see how you go - we like you to be your best teacher - but the main reason for the handle is more about getting through to the top of the swing as opposed to hitting the ball - see what works for you and share your feedback - we'd love to hear what happens for you.
Tried it and mind to body if I consciously tried to make the handle go horizontally past the ball I faded or sliced it. Best for any repeatable swing is for me not to consciously "try" at any part of the swing. I can get the handle pointed at the ball, basic zip code, and I turn. If I just onlyi think about getting to the finish I might be better off. One thing I noticed from watching replay/stop video/start video of Solheim Cup players--at impact they are riveted on the ball with their eyes or at least their head position. So it feels difficult to be riveted on the ball and yet mind to body tell your body not to stop until the real finish. Anyway, what's your take?@@GolfUniversity
I have watched countless videos to optimise my golf swing - unfortunately without success. This lesson for seniors is great! I was able to put it into practice on the golf course today. I will continue to work on it. Thank you very much and best regards from Switzerland.
Lawrie, I was struggling with my swing and had no consitency for many years. But after watching your video, everything change, You spoke a language that I completely understood. Your technique is simple and easy to repeat and...gives results. Thank you my friend.

WOW!! This transformed my game. I struggled with contact and hitting the ball cleanly. I watched the video and went to the range and tried it. I couldn't hit a bad shot! It was effortless, great contact with all clubs and greater distance. Thank you.
Coming back to golf after 15 years and this made a lot of sense as I'm working on the right swing for me now rather than when I was younger. This video nailed it for me!
It gives you a different way to think. Started using this a couple of rounds ago and found an instant difference. It's all about the inner game between the ears.
I watched this lesson several times and followed all the important points brought up throughout this lesson and it worked so amazing for me. I can finally go out and golf using this simplified technique and stop working at everything so much. What a great easy well spoken instructive learning session this has been for me. Thank You so much 👍🏻
Excellent advice for senior golfers like me (aged 71 and nowhere near as fit/flexible as I'd like to be). So much golfing content on the net is only applicable to people who are fortunate enough to be able to (try to) mimic the swing of pro/top level golfers.

Brother... you get it. Thank you. Too many pros trying to teach swings that golfers can't execute because they have limited mobility. Awesome stuff here.
I play off 10, and have been struggling to get anywhere near my handicap lately, I tried this method today at the course and after a bit of practice I was amazed at the distance and accuracy of my shots, must admit I have even considered giving up golf due to my bad play, this has given me a new lease of life, looking forward to Saturday
I started playing golf again when i retired a couple years ago. I am now almost 61. I am one of those people who study the heck out of things so i know a lot but putting it to work is difficult. I love your explanation of the golf swing is NOT about hitting the ball as the target, but finishing a nice balanced swing and the ball gets in the way. When i remember this i hit pretty good shots. I started with a 25 handicap about two years ago and now i am at 15, mostly by things like this advice. Whenever i forget i usually try to kill the ball and wind up over the top steep downswing and very left dead pull shots. Thanks for the simple explanation. I am going to introduce this to my wife tomorrow when we go play for the first time together.

The concept of swinging thru and letting the ball get in the way us awesome! It's much simpler to understand than hitting down on the ball with a club that has to swing on an arch. Thanks for giving me a new drill !!
This video is the best I have ever watched, I've been learning off and on for about 2 years now and this video explained where i was going wrong...I relaxed my muscles and let the club swing instead of trying to guide it to the ball.Massive improvement many thanks lawrie

Thanks Lawrie. I'm a 66 year old trying to return to the game after 2 hip replacements and back trouble. Your drills and theory seem straightforward and very sound. I am definitely hitting at rather than through and I will try to employ your principles. Will post back results. Cheers.

I've been using this teaching and taking it into my game plan, using it regularly by referring to it during a round, visualizing it, practicing it, sleeping with those thoughts, glimpsing it throughout the daily routines and rest times, doing it 2nd nature, it becomes a habit now, I know what it should feel like, look like, and the results that follow, my friends notice the change and recognize my game as the best in our circle of 75-year-old golfers. I have had more mid 70's scores than ever in my life in the last 2 years and become more confident with greens in regulation, averaging 60% GIR. The only change that has helped me because of physical disabilities is using one club more and knowing the correct distances to the landing targets, I have also switched to the claw grip putting and reduced my putting average to 30 putts per round, with occasional 26 to 30 putt rounds that allow me par rounds of 72. We play from the senior tees 5500yds. Thank You for this valuable teaching it has made Golf fun again. Blessings to you!
Thank you Al for such great feedback we are thrilled that your game is going so well enjoying your game again - your post reminds us of so many of our happy Search 4 Scratch members after relearning how to play golf (not golf swing) again - keep up the great work and keep us posted on future results as we would love to hear how you progress.

Best golf video I’ve ever seen…just getting back to swinging a club after a major left foot operation and I think your tips will really help me ⛳️🙂👍 cheers
As a "senior" golfer with 2 hips and 1 knee replacement (only started golfing 5 years ago), I can 100% certify that this instruction works. Not sure how this video came into my timeline but I've been following exactly this instruction for the last several years looking for the easiest swing. Folks, this works. Ever wonder why your practice swings look and feel great but as soon as you put a ball down, it all goes awry ? Too much thought on HITTING THE BALL.. Setup correctly and CONSISTENTLY (to the point where you can hit the ball with your eyes closed.(no joke) *just to make contact) Once you have that consistency down, as this video instructs you, backswing --> follow through. If you're consistent, the ball will just be in the way ! Your swing will feel freer and most likely will make better contact. My swing "thought" after I line up and set myself - 'easy swing back, follow through". Every shot and it has greatly increased my love of the game and really having fun playing.. Don't feel like you have to be too rigid or keep your head down - that's not relaxing at all. TRY IT if you're frustrated with your game or if you feel like 18 holes is torture.. I just don't recommend playing with your eyes closed !! Have fun and good luck.. Thanks for the video, Lawrie.. Great job of explaining..
Going to give this a go. Turning 65 soon, I never had good turn to begin with. 10 finger for better hinge and to offset hand/finger arthritis. Years ago, Lawrie had a video about the back knee turning behind the front knee on downswing. That was a gem too.
Love this instruction, simple and uncomplicated. took this to the course and have never hit such solid shots adding distance as well. The only time it broke down was when the shoulders got involved. Its made me realise after all these years I put too much effort in for very little reward. Concentrating on getting the club in the right positions using hands and forearms and letting the the relaxed body just follow got to be the way for seniors, Thx, Pete
Hello, just watched your video on the swing for seniors. It makes a lot of sense. I’m a 68 year old senior that struggles with making fat shots, going to try what you were talking about in this video, but with that being said was wondering if you have any advice or drills to stop hitting fat shots? TIA!!
I got more out of this simple system than any other video that I’ve seen over the past 5 years. I find that so many of us are screwing ourselves into the ground trying to make a pro type of turn that we lost track of the essential club route. IT WORKS! Thanks very much for that.
Thank you John - you make a great point there - too many teachers trying to teach amateur golfers to be pros - unfortuantely most of us don't practice 8 hours a day 6 days a week 😀

Still at range. Used tutorial to look at swing. Current coach is trying to get me, a 62 year old with extra padding and 3 recent hip operations (yes one was done twice.) This left me stiff and sore to the point that I was worried I was having a heart attack. Used your tutorial with another that said to use a strong 3 knuckles showing grip and keeping right elbow close to chest during swing. Was hitting ball further, more accurately and with much better contact. Will update on how it relates on course. Rod

Nice head of hair kid. I call you kid because I'll be 70 next week. BTW, I still have a good head of silver hair too. I was an 8.3 a long time ago, but with the added pounds and advancing years I'm carrying an honest 14. I was doing a Google search looking for videos for senior slappers when I came across yours. Love your presentation on the subject so I subscribed to your channel. I've been ball bound for some time now and I think this video will help me with that issue. Watch the video on weight shift, another one of my issues, and lots of great info in both videos. Thanks for posting them. Here in NJ (USA) it's still winter, but when it warms up enough I'll be taking all these swing thoughts to the range with the hope of regaining some semblance of a golf game. Thanks again.

Good video Lawrie. Pretty simple explanation. I like the idea of thinking about the swing as a whole rather than thinking the ball strike is the end. I do find myself thinking once I hit the ball it's done. I will go out and try to think of the rest of the swing after contact as just as important.
This is great. I am 76 years old and can’t swing the club like I used to. I make great practice swings like you do in this video. Once over the golf ball, everything changes. Going to work on the swing instead of hitting the ball. Thanks.

Great understanding of the different type of golf swing. Finally great to see an instructional video that knows and validates that not everyone needs to swing alike. Very good video you clearly understand there is no one method to the swing. Thank you
Thanks Kevin Any coach out there who thinks everyone should swing the same should not be coaching - unfortunately that's 95 per cent of the industry or more 😣 in no other sport are players encouraged to be the same as each other and no one on the lpga or pga tour swings the same anyway so not sure where they get there philosophy from 😁

Fantastic lesson. I played this swing, due to limited lower back movement, and had a great round, one that was stress free n also pain free. Thank you from Carlsbad, California ( TaylorMade ) 🙂⛳🌊
Good advice; started when 60; then surgeries; was single digit few years ago but swing speed way down to low 80s; will try to work the golf handle the way u show. I played golf (before I took up golf) in Bali 1974 when on break from teaching in Brisbane. We were too cheap to rent caddies and shared a bag of clubs with another. Needed a 5 iron; mate threw it 40 yards to me grip hitting the ground, and club face smacking me breaking a tooth. Gave golf another go few decades later.

This is a great vid for me Lawrie. I’m 68, right handed with stiff joints in general. I have very little turn of my body and a right hip that needs replacing. I like your instruction with the swing angle & handle pointing to the ball. I especially like your concentration of swinging from the top, all the way through to the finish; and striking the ball because it’s in the way of your complete swing. That really clicked for me. I’m also going to change my grip from interlocking to “hand over hand” to get more wrist action. I’m going to try your techniques first thing. Thanks again.

And I know they enjoy my company as much as I enjoy theirs, but when all is said and done, "I want to score better."
Sorry, this is so long, but I thought you should know, even a year after you posted this video...I saw it and it encouraged me.
Thanks Nancy all the best with the new, but exciting Golf journey about to unfold

God bless,

Thank you Jeff we really appreciate your kind feedback and we are glad we could be of service in some way
Great comments! Lawrie Montague, you are the teacher of the decade! Just got back from the range and the swing you taught us has proven a great success. No loss of distance at all. Wow...simply wow

Thats awesome, thanks for sharing Ethan

Thank you Bill - we agree Lawrie is one of the best 😀
This absolutely works. I'm 81 and had cervical surgery 10 months ago, replacing my C3. Needless to say, my golf swing was a shadow of itself. I could barely hit the ball and was exhausted after 9 holes. I've adopted your swing ideas and I'm loving it. I'm not back to where I was 10 years ago, but I'm competitive, not fatigued, and I'm playing 18 hole rounds. You have saved my golfing life.
Great to hear Tim well done
Follow up:
I went out to the golf range yesterday and for the first time I did a routine of taking a few half swings from half way back to half way though before in repeatable motions before addressing the ball.
That's fantastic news Peter we look forward to hearing how it goes on your home course

Best ever tuition for oldies.
Thank you Les - what were your biggest learnings
I have watched 100,s of golf swing videos over the Covid period and this is, without doubt, the BEST instructional video I have seen. If us Seniors, 70 years old or more, cannot get their swing working better after seeing this then give up the game now. I am really sincere in this as it cannot get easier than this. Thank you Lawrie, much appreciation from an 80 year old. still enjoying this wonderful game.
Thanks Bob for the kind feedback we appreciate it and wish you all the best with your game
I watch you and other videos like your and I try to pick up a pointer or two. The most impressive pointer from yours was, to make sure the hand end of the club goes toward the ball and not the
club head.
Thanks,
Preston
Thanks AL for your great feedback - always valued - sounds like you had a great round and with some putting improvements you will soon be on fire 😀

Thank you Carlo
Your ideas and advice were so simple it was genius. "the ball gets in the way." Brilliant!
Thank you Jeffrey

Coming back to golf after 15 years and this made a lot of sense as I'm working on the right swing for me now rather than when I was younger. This video nailed it for me!
Great to hear Timothy - let us know how you go after a few practice sessions
It gives you a different way to think. Started using this a couple of rounds ago and found an instant difference. It's all about the inner game between the ears.
I'm just starting golfing and I'm over 50. this video is spot on, exactly what I wanted to see. I don't need play game for maximum distance per swing.
Thank you @bryanbounds23 - yes its not all about distance

Excellent advice for senior golfers like me (aged 71 and nowhere near as fit/flexible as I'd like to be). So much golfing content on the net is only applicable to people who are fortunate enough to be able to (try to) mimic the swing of pro/top level golfers.

Thanks Terry you are so right there
I play off 10, and have been struggling to get anywhere near my handicap lately, I tried this method today at the course and after a bit of practice I was amazed at the distance and accuracy of my shots, must admit I have even considered giving up golf due to my bad play, this has given me a new lease of life, looking forward to Saturday
Great to hear Vito let us know how you go on Saturday and we are glad you are enjoying your golf again
Thanks for the great feedback Lloyd - remember to keep things simple and enjoy your first ever round wih your wife? Where are you playing?

Great video for “Seniors “
Clear instructions and empathy
Thank you Gary we'd love to hear your biggest takeaways from the lesson

Thanks for the great feedback Mike - we are glad to help
Very good swing thought - tried it out and made much better contact - ball flight
Will continue to use this

Going to give this a go. Turning 65 soon, I never had good turn to begin with. 10 finger for better hinge and to offset hand/finger arthritis. Years ago, Lawrie had a video about the back knee turning behind the front knee on downswing. That was a gem too.
Enjoy Michael and let us know how you go
Love this instruction, simple and uncomplicated. took this to the course and have never hit such solid shots adding distance as well.
The only time it broke down was when the shoulders got involved. Its made me realise after all these years I put too much effort in for very little reward.
Concentrating on getting the club in the right positions using hands and forearms and letting the the relaxed body just follow got to be the way for seniors,
Thx, Pete
Thanks Pete we are glad you had that breakthrough
Hello, just watched your video on the swing for seniors. It makes a lot of sense. I’m a 68 year old senior that struggles with making fat shots, going to try what you were talking about in this video, but with that being said was wondering if you have any advice or drills to stop hitting fat shots? TIA!!

This worked very well. It felt more relaxed but still had lots of power.

Nice head of hair kid. I call you kid because I'll be 70 next week. BTW, I still have a good head of silver hair too. I was an 8.3 a long time ago, but with the added pounds and advancing years I'm carrying an honest 14. I was doing a Google search looking for videos for senior slappers when I came across yours. so true as a 77 yr old golfer i often find myself trying to overpower the ball . Thank you

Good video Lawrie. Pretty simple explanation. I like the idea of thinking about the swing as a whole rather than thinking the ball strike is the end. I do find myself thinking once I hit the ball it's done. I will go out and try to think of the rest of the swing after contact as just as important.

Decided to take up golf this year; in my early 70s, overall fit, and want to enjoy the game without injuring myself. Thanks for this video.
Great decision Dean to play golf - glad you enjoyed the lesson and keep us updated on your progress and remember to check out our program at www.search4scratch.tv/search4scratchprogram
Very interesting, clearly presented and this is content that I have not seen in other videos for senior golfers. Thanks!
Thank you Mike
An excellent video, very straight forward and one of the best I have seen. Just what I need.
Thank you Norman - keep us updated on your progress
Very important info - I love the fact to let the club do the work but I learned to let the ball get in the way. Thanks

Came here looking for tips as a 59 yr old beginner. Great tips, especially as I've had a frozen shoulder and a tennis elbow. I've managed to hit over 100 yards with a pitching wedge in practice following this method.
@debrawright9195 thank you Debra great to hear we could help
Brilliant video I have bad knees so I’ve very little movement, can’t wait to try your swing.
Thanks

WOW. This is really really good. This is the way golf instruction should be, simple and straightforward and most importantly tips and instructions that we mere mortals can actually do! Well done and thank you. I WILL be subscribing.
Thanks James - glad you enjoyed the lesson - your feedback is much appreciated
@@GolfUniversity Practicing and playing both today and tomorrow -- I plan to watch this video before leaving the house!

I am 72 with back problems and this information helped me to be more consistent and longer
Great to hear Kenneth - what was your biggest takeaway from the lesson?
Fabulous! Great common sense for us older rotationally challenged. I’m subscribed.
Thanks Mark - glad you enjoyed it
I'm 76 but still in pretty good shape and can frequently shoot my age or better. This lesson was great a long with lots a practical advice for us seniors. I've fallen in the habit of trying to hit the ball so the advice on letting it get in the way was priceless. Subcribed
Thanks Dave glad to hear you enjoyed the lesson and also to hear how well you are playing - where do you play most of your golf?
Thanks
Dave

I have to say that this is a great way to swing fast and a great way to miss the ball. Every time I've tried this technique in both golf and tennis, it leads to great power and no control.
Apply the same process Brian but try slowing it down
Nice, concise and logical advice.. need to keep this advice in my golf bag.. for easy reminders.. thanks mate.. Geoff
Thanks Geoff - Glad you enjoyed the lesson - let us know how you go on the course
Thank you this has been an eye opener so excellency explained. What a Christmas present. Hope you all have a cracking time.
