Excellent advice I’m going back to lifting my left heel because as a senior I need to protect my back and get more distance. I’m starting to get back twinges because modern coaching promoted keeping the feet quiet. Well Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer all had athletic foot movement and they seemed to do well.
Being 70, you had me chuckling when you said you were "disappointed hitting your 7 iron 190 yards." But I loved your lesson and since I'm straight, but short, I need to use it and try to gain distance. Well done.
I've actually been doing this but at the same time it's so refreshing to see people teaching this versus the old X factor where I thought I was supposed to keep my hips more stationary creating tension.
I am the senior you talk about. Off 6, 64 years soon, but lost those yards. Always strive to keep it in play. The footwork you're doing here is the key for me, the tough part is my back heel coming back up. I need that trail knee touching my front knee after impact. This and your video on the driver for seniors has really helped me. Appreciate your help Ali, cheers
Early 40s but could pass for late 30s 😉 Its one thing swinging fuller but then you need to keep it tight and hit the sweet spot. I see plenty of aged golfers with short back swings but still accelerate through the ball with good distance and on the fairways. Im 53 and often take the easy option of playing up a club to save my lower back. Its worse during slow play when you stand around between shots. I suggest adding daily stretches and warming up properly but very few do haha
I have got to say I enjoy your channel immensely! You make sense of the swing, reduce complexity and make application of your instructions easier to implement than nearly any other instruction channel! Especially for those of us in the “champions” category! Keep up the good work! Your point about the hips is crucial for distance and accuracy, at least it has for my game. I am better with my long game (driver, fairway and hybrids) than I am with my irons! I still seem to get too steep, quick with the shoulders and chest withe all irons. Pulls and toe strikes are my nemesis!!
Alastair you have given me plenty to think about. I am 80 years old my left leg was amputated below the knee 43 years ago and surgery on my right knee in 2015 requires me to wear a knee brace. I flair both feet out but I have trouble with balance if I lift my trail heel off the ground on the downswing. I think lifting the lead heel up and planting it down could help me. The advantage of being old I can remember back 50 years ago and remember that great 3-Iron that I hit and that 250-yard shot that I hit on the Par-5 10th hole at Ryde-Parramatta GC in Sydney.
Hi Ali, I believe what u are demonstrating. However I also believe that the distances realized are not realistic, simply because U making the swings and consious or unconscious it is adjusted by U. I would like to see that U invite a senior let's say a 20 hcp and do the improvement excercises. Believe that would be more realistic for us seniors. Nevertheless keep up the good work, we oldies need good instructions to work with. Cheers...harry
I will for sure try this next time I’m out on the range! 3 back surgeries have limited my back swing, no speed in the club head at all. Thanks for the tips.
Really enjoy your channel Ali! Simple and straightforward for this 61 year old, with a strong logic linking the swing to the outcome. I now have a few clear swing thoughts when I practice: 1) rotate the hip in backswing, 2) shoulder turn on plane with spine, 3) start the downswing with planting the lead foot to get low point forward. I am slowly increasing the percentage of swings where I manage to do all three. If I do them all then my PW has gone from my regular 95 to 110, 9 iron from 110-130, 7 iron from 145 to 165 and 5R from 165 to 190. Also working on the driver and loving your tip for trail foot back and flared! Thanks!
As a 58 year old GEEZER golfer, I really appreciate the help Ali. Been in need of a right hip replacement for some time and been using the "dropped back" right foot. Truley helps. Thanks, and great tips as always.
I am 71. Although I first played golf in my mid 30s I played very little golf over the next 40 years, maybe 5 or 6 times a year. My 40 year old son got me back on the golf course a year ago and since then I haplayed more golf that I have in 40 years. New clubs, joined a small golf club and I love it. However I am feeling some back pain so this video may help me enormously. I have just record my first handicap 17.2. You are my sort of coach Ali thanks. Your age? Between 40-43 I would guess.
What a great video Ali. I love the way you demonstrate the wrong and the right way to swing a golf club. At the courses I play I see the majority of over 50 year olds swinging like the before video......restricted backswing and no follow through. Most golfers would really benefit from this video. Who wouldn't like to carry their 7 iron close to 200 yards. I would say your age is 48.
Try to hit the imagery ball (eyes on that imaginary ball position and move your hips ahead of the ball)approximately a foot ahead of your normal ball position. It sounds like your subconscious mind is slowing down the club head at impact. Hope this helps
nice video, as a senior I can appreciate it very much. my biggest problem is 10 screws in right shoulder that holds me back from a long follow through,,and double crossing a lot. 46 years old is your age?
You are around 60 I’m 68 haven’t played in 10 years due health problems, now I can’t even get the ball off the ground. I used to shoot in high 80s to mid 90s so now I try to due the same and get frustrated. I am going to try your changes and I think it will help a great deal thanks ric
As a "Super Champion" golfer that was really useful, many thanks👍 One of the things that I notice in my fellow SC's is that they have a tendency to take the club too far on the inside in their backswing, which results in a REALLY short swing, TOTALLY lacking in power & speed. I used to do it myself, but now I make a conscious effort to do more of a Matt Wolff swing, which gives me more room & length in my backswing giving me much more clubhead speed & distance
You have a good few years on me Ali so I will guess at 43. At 50 years young I have only been playing for a few months and flexibility is something I really need to work on. Needless to say I will be giving these tips a try. I often reach a little to far forward/down which drops my shoulders and makes the rotation much more strained, resulting in much less control and distance. Don't suppose you have any tips on this, or would perhaps consider it for a future video?
Hi Ali. Very helpful vid. Would love to see that 90mph swing in slo mo. I've been looking at my own swing in slo mo and I see incorrect moves I need to overcome.
48, had right hip replaced 4 years ago, left handed golfer this sucks, lost a ton of speed. 67 now I have to lift the right heel off the ground now and has helped emensiouly.
Well! I did give this a go today, Ali, after I saw this. Considering the conditions and that everybody is a club and a half down at this time of year. It did put a clubs distance on my Irons. The clubhead speed was indeed a bit quicker. I am one of those who's woods are better than my Irons, but not today amazingly. There was not a lot in it between my 5 Iron and 4 Hybrid. I will have to rethink my woods, I can't splay both feet for the woods . The woods have been affected. Thanks for improving my Irons. Keep up the great content.
I would say between 53 and 55. Great videos. I am 68 and everything you talked about I have felt. I will have to wait a few months until spring to try out your suggestions. Thanks
I'll say you are 38. Great video. I'll share it with my older buddy who has lost most of his flexibility. He will probably resist, because he hates change of any sort; e.g., his driver is 20 years old!
At 66 I play off 12. Trying to free up my swing as my backswing has become shorter which I tried to achieve. Trued some of the tips you suggest.....with my 7 iron, club speed still around 65 mph and carry of only around 124 yards. Really frustrating.....
Wish I had this knowledge 15 years ago…I was 38 then, but suffering from bad hip pain…I wound up getting my left hip replaced 10 years ago (I’m righty) and wound up turning my left foot out due to necessity and noticed how much better I could turn through…then, last year, I had my right hip replaced, and you guessed it, was forced to flare out my right toe to take strain off the right hip…the end result…I hit a 7 iron farther now then I did 15 years ago..I mainly use players irons, so not juiced up lofts, although I’m considering changing to get a bit more distance with less effort to preserve the hips…
Hi Ali love the video and advice do you have any tips for senior golfer with troublesome knees recently had knee replacement so struggling to get full rotation.ps you do not look a day over 50 😂
I am in my early 70's. These tips are extraordinary to compensate for the movement of the hips. I am still working on consistency for control of the ball direction but you have help me tremendously. Thank you.
Hi Ali great video i am a champion golfer ( senior lol ) i do use this method and yes i have gained a few yards 👍🏌️♂️ keep up with great vids ..atb Andy
53. I have have doing this for a while. i also open my stance a shade, point the club face at the target and swing slightly out to in. Great distance, it stops quickly on the green and a small fade. At 67 , my34* 7 iron is a 180yd. club.
I’m 68 ,after new hip and shoulder surgery I’ve gone from 5 to 8 handicap . I have lost so much distance it’s quite frustrating. I will try your technique tomorrow morning. By the way are you 46 ? Not eligible for champions tour yet. Thank you for the video.Chris.
I agree with all you’ve said but I must add that there also has to be flexibility in the lumbar and thoracic sections of the back. The hips can’t do it all or be the end all game changer.
Another great video Ali,thanks. A quick question. In a prior video for Seniors, you pulled back your right foot as well. Is this still the way to go? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks
Hi Ali, I will trade your 40 for my 57. Great video as always. Your videos are excellent tutorials and are fueling my passion for a better round of golf. There just isn't enough time to practice!
Ali, great content, but could I ask, how strong is the club you are using ? You say it’s a strong 7 how strong ? 5iron strong ? Europe PGA guys average 7iron 170, I was with a ex European Pro, and he pick my P770 7 iron up and hit 5 shots, averaging 177yards with a 94 club speed 1.3 smash at 18°. Could you use a true or average 7 iron so we could get a truer representation of what to expect from our 7 irons please. I say this with the upmost respect and love watching your content as they are great advise ! Thanks
As for my swing. Being 42 bad knees and arms hurting. It is frustrating not being able to swing faster. Being an electrician. I can handle heavy loads and hand strength is pretty good. But turning that strength into speed. Is still hard for me. But I will give it a shot.
You hit it further when you were using the more 'senior' set up! As you migrated towards your natural stance, swing etc, your total distance fell off. Loved the video.
What would be real nice would be for the 12 handicapper 12-15 what the stats of each club should be. At least it would give me something to compare to. What you think? Again Thank You
i once used to carry a club in my bag for throwing up trees to get the first more expensive one down, and yes once i got that fast too and had to use a third.
Great video. If I could get 200 yards with any iron I would probably just keep my woods at home 😆. Will definitely practice this. Oh and I’m 52 and would guess you are about 10 years younger
I prefer to copy what Tiger does and this is a feel. Swing the arms fast with the idea of getting the clubhead to the ball before the lower body moves. (the body will move of course). The arms move the body not the other way around. Takes all stupid swings thoughts out of the equation. You can only see this in video when you slow it down!!
Like this and tried lifting the left heel on the backswing but planting the heel back down results in shanks. My swing speeds with 7 iron is only around 65mph and so hitting 7 iron only around 120 yards or even shorter......I am 66 and 6 feet 3 and somewhat a laughing stock with my mates by hitting the ball so short☹
Hello Ali can You Adress Distance from Ball setup, I am 64 and can turn way past 180 Degrees , Played Baseball Softball till was 44, Never played Golf till end ball playing think shot 113 first out , took 6 months to break 90 and 5 years to brake 80, Have broken 70 few times ,,Had some knee Surgery’s , and then got into that X factor Bullshite, still got good turn , But hit it all across the universe now , Too much experimenting and Thoughts , Think moving Ball position too much!!!
Sorry but i think these distances are totally unrealistic for a true senior like me, 65 plus, who's had surgeries and injuries on back on hips, i appreciate the points of splayed feet for rotation but those swing speeds are simply unobtainable for most, these are young fit strong tour pro distances, if i tried to swing at those speeds I'd not only tire, I'd injure myself further, the 140 carry is more realistic for most.
Ali love your videos, but please invest in a slowmotion camera ... it's not the same as you swing slower to show us (over exaggeration) the move we need to do. In a normal swing if you move your right knee that far forward , you end up flat on your face.....but I get what your trying to get across.
I am 75 yrs old. Thanks for calling me a CHAMPION. My driver swing speed is about 80 MPH. I'll never hit my seven iron 200 yrs even with your lesson. It's all about age.
Guessing 39, the worlds popular age ! Q: Watching your swing, you don’t seem to move forward just before contact. Is that important, especially for us mature, aka older, golfers ? Thanks
I'm 70, and can only reach 200 with my 5 wood. Have tried the left heel tip with driver, but I just lost what little control I have. Will try to slay the right tires though. I'd put you as mud to late 40's
You might be in your middle 40s. I am nearly 71, and I identify with everything you are saying about the old fart golf swing, because I am having lots of it.
Hi Ali enjoyed your video this morning before breakfast I’m only 73
Thank you for the good video. You do a great job of explaining the various steps and movements that make up the swing you want the golfer to produce.
Being 70, you had me chuckling when you said you were "disappointed hitting your 7 iron 190 yards." But I loved your lesson and since I'm straight, but short, I need to use it and try to gain distance. Well done.
I hear you. I hit my 3 wood 190 if I nail it. But this guy makes sense so I will be giving his tips a try.
Your really helping me a lot have not played for about 20 years but use to play 4 days a week, I'm 67 now
I've actually been doing this but at the same time it's so refreshing to see people teaching this versus the old X factor where I thought I was supposed to keep my hips more stationary creating tension.

Try to feel like your first movement in the downswing is towards the target with the lower body.
Alastair you have given me plenty to think about. I am 80 years old my left leg was amputated below the knee 43 years ago and surgery on my right knee in 2015 requires me to wear a knee brace. Thanks, I just turned 60 and have to play in a event in May. This is my first training video that makes sense. I'm planning on winning the thing.
Good follow through with your right foot ending up on your toe at finish of the swing..A lot of seniors don,t or can,t finish this way.
Hi Ali, I believe what u are demonstrating. However I also believe that the distances realized are not realistic, simply because U making the swings and consious or unconscious it is adjusted by U.

I'm 55 and this video has excellent and some fantastic tips, I will certainly use these next time I play.
I reckon a mere baby at 45 👍😁

Your 7 iron swing speed is faster than my driver speed. So now what do I do, to get close to your 7 iron distance with my driver ?
Try to hit the imagery ball (eyes on that imaginary ball position and move your hips ahead of the ball)approximately a foot ahead of your normal ball position. It sounds like your subconscious mind is slowing down the club head at impact. Hope this helps

You make it look so easy I will try it out before my next game cheers 👍 35 years young😜
Great lesson. This type of swing is what keeps Phil Mickelson relevant. This is his swing. He's never been injured.
Hi Ali can you go into more detail for creating lag in the down swing

Gibbo 👍
I need to try this out at the range! I wish you had a camp available to work either in a small group or one-on-one.
Where do you live Steve?
@@AliTaylorGolf - in Wisconsin, but would consider travel in US. Ideally, I'd like to get a friend or two to come as well.
@@AliTaylorGolf - also, I'm in Scottsdale January to mid-March.
I might see about doing something in the US next year if possible
Drop me an email on info@alitaylorgolf.com and I’ll add you to my coaching list
Manual De La Torres taught a very balanced and natural swing, with no mention of hip or shoulder turn. It works for me.
good video thanks
Excellent videoand your recommendations do work.....with practice! Thank you so much!
Execelent video. I dont kwou how he can do that whith a seven iron.
You hit it further when you were using the more 'senior' set up! As you migrated towards your natural stance, swing etc, your total distance fell off. Loved the video.
Does this apply to drver too?
What would be real nice would be for the 12 handicapper 12-15 what the stats of each club should be. At least it would give me something to compare to. What you think? Again Thank You
I only hit my 7 iron 130 yards. Ironically I can throw it 160 yards.
That's okay if you can hit it 130 nearly everytime ,140 with your i6 and 150 with your i5 .... that's the key to playing well.
i once used to carry a club in my bag for throwing up trees to get the first more expensive one down, and yes once i got that fast too and had to use a third.
Always had steel.shafts for my iron..Would graphite suit me?.i play off 17..Swing speed isn't that fast
I go with 48 - but looking good at it!
I want a solid 170 yds on the 7. I used to hit 7 at 203 par 3 at my club m, so 195 or so.
Great video. If I could get 200 yards with any iron I would probably just keep my woods at home 😆. Will definitely practice this. Oh and I’m 52 and would guess you are about 10 years younger

What's the loft on that "7 iron"?
Good stuff
Great video, thanks for the tips I appreciate it. As for the age I would have to say 48
Im 59 and i hit my 7 iron 190

Sorry but i think these distances are totally unrealistic for a true senior like me, 65 plus, who's had surgeries and injuries on back on hips, i appreciate the points of splayed feet for rotation but those swing speeds are simply unobtainable for most, these are young fit strong tour pro distances, if i tried to swing at those speeds I'd not only tire, I'd injure myself further, the 140 carry is more realistic for most.
Old enough to not tell your age. That is what my father says. Lol. Keep up the good work
Great Video…. The question is now….. am I a Senior Golfer 😉…. Worth a another Video 😂😂
I'll be taking this on-board when I next get to the driving range. Thanks from a 73 year old 😐
I’m trying but still haven’t got the “sequence “ right. Still trying
Ali love your videos, but please invest in a slowmotion camera ... it's not the same as you swing slower to show us (over exaggeration) the move we need to do.
In a normal swing if you move your right knee that far forward , you end up flat on your face.....but I get what your trying to get across.
52 here, two bad hips, one fake and all these things definitely help
How old was Old Tom Morris?
I am 75 yrs old. Thanks for calling me a CHAMPION. My driver swing speed is about 80 MPH. I'll never hit my seven iron 200 yrs even with your lesson. It's all about age.
My guess is 43....Always helpful video’s...
Are English years the same as American years?
Guessing 39, the worlds popular age ! Q: Watching your swing, you don’t seem to move forward just before contact. Is that important, especially for us mature, aka older, golfers ? Thanks
I'm 70, and can only reach 200 with my 5 wood. Have tried the left heel tip with driver, but I just lost what little control I have. Will try to slay the right tires though. I'd put you as mud to late 40's
200 with a 5 wood is nothing to be sniffed at
7 iron is my 140 club. I think you are 44. Like 8 years younger than me. Hope I can get that 7 iron up to 160
Thanks for the great tips.
I will guess 46.
39...lol..... 190 is my driver ....ty
Great job 48yrs
You might be in your middle 40s.
I am nearly 71, and I identify with everything you are saying about the old fart golf swing, because I am having lots of it.
I always stay flat footed in my through-swing
Not sure if a video for seniors showing a 7 iron being hit 200 yards while half-trying is that encouraging! 😂
J/k - great content
I'm nearly 50
I think you mentioned the other day that you are 44. And you didn’t lose me. I’m 69.
Senior swing
What is senior age? I bowl and they consider senior at 50. I play a golf course that considers senior 60 and another that considers senior 80.
The course that says 80 is to long for me at 61 so I play senior tees anyway
