How to build a Chicken Coop. The Finish!!

  • Finishing up the chicken coop. I'm building the nesting box, installing the metal roof and covering the exterior with the hardware cloth to keep predators out. Now that everything is complete, its time to order some chickens.

    🇬🇧 I remember my grandma receiving little yellow chickens (hand sized) delivered by the Royal Mail postman. A dozen, maybe, in a foot square x 3" brown cardboard box with air holes in the top. 70+ years ago.

    Thank you, this was very helpful. Especially when it’s visual, step by step ect. I saw you were using a framing tool and my brother is lending us one. Hope we can continue to build our coop now with these ideas and no one to help. Our baby peeps are getting big and we’re running out of time. Big encouragement, thankyou.

    Wow this was just awesome love the large chicken run went out and measured my area from rabbit leanto shed down to my fence line and saw I had enough to do this size coup and run along with goat shed for two Nubian nannies 😁 can’t wait to climb out of this semi to get started in March on coup/run thank you for the inspiration

    Great video! You’re doing a great job! We have the exact same saw, in a box still in storage. Sad, I know.     Future. Stack the roofing, measure the center of the board, pre drill the screw holes, then when you get on top you know where ever screw goes, no mistakes. It will look a lot better cause the rows will be straight. If you do it once you'll never go back.

      There are several components to doing a pro job. One plan I discovered that successfully combines these is the Coop Magic Tactic (check it out on google) without a doubt the best info that I have ever heard of. look at this great website.

    Nice henhouse! We use the same roosts :) We just change them out when the wind blows down new ones lol.

    a little tip; if you were to measure out where you want your screws on your sheet metal, stack up about 8 or so sheets and drive an awl through them. all of your screws will be lined up straight as an arrow.

      I did that on the house. I pre drilled all the holes and it made it a lot easier.

    i have the roosting bars in the run. the henhouse stays clean. the run is cleaned twice a year. the eggs stay clean this way too.

    If you would have added a piece of final flooring on the chicken roost it would make is much easier to clean out.

    Nice build. How many birds are you planning on? Our coop was 16x16 with 6x16 sectioned off for feed storage. Our run area was 16x20. We would bring in 50 fryers plus 25 layers per year. We also had other pens for ducks, geese, ducks you name it the wife would bring it in to see if it worked. Thank God I worked in the trades and helped by others. Came over from Bobblehead. Thank you for helping Jeff.

      Ill keep around 25 or so laying hens in the coop. That should be enough room in the hen house without being crowded. I will be adding poultry netting next year so they can get outside and get some sunshine

    Didn't see how you stopped your birds from going under your building or did you put the hardware cloth around the building?
    Nice setup. Just finished a 7x8 coop with 14' attached run myself. You're right, you come up with some nifty ways of getting things done when your by yourself.

      Actually I don’t. It was just something that I added onto my barn . I can’t remember if I gave any dimensions in the video but the whole thing is built on 8’ centers.

      actually I dont have any construction background. I do have a lot of experience in engineering and design which doesnt hurt.

    You put the perlins on top of the 2x6's to screw the tin to. That raised it 3/4". How did you make your bird blocks?

      I used 2x6 for bird blocks and ran the hardware cloth all the way up to the metal.

      @@hickoryridgehomestead9177 Just wondering because it looked like you used 2x6's for the rafters and plus 3/4" on top of that. So a 2x6 would be 3/4" to narrow to work

      @@w0lf1969 you are forgetting about the birds mouth that I cut on the rafter tails. That lowered the 2x6 down on that end. I hope that helps

    Would linoleum on the floor of the nesting box make clean out easier ?

      it would probably be a little easier. The bedding is about 4 inches deep so it will take a while before it needs to be changed and then I can just use a rake to pull it out and sweep the rest. If its a lot of trouble the first time I change it I will put down linoleum . Thanks for the tip!!

      Actually, linoleum is porous. Oiling the floor is best.

      I’m not sure of the total cost of the coop itself but it was probably around $800

    Why don’t you put gutters on it so you can catch rainwater ,to water the chickens

    I'm not a fan of these short coop's, I feel a walk in coop with a large door is much better.
    They are easier to clean and much easier to maintain the roosting bars.
    Chickens poop on everything and it needs to be scaped off and sanitized.
    Hard to do in a a coop with four foot walls.
    Other than that ,man you build a bullet proof coop and run.

    Nice job, but you are going to have to crawl in s h i t to get inside. Would have been better to build a door from the pen side, and at the bottom of the door make the chicken door.

      Unless there is a snake or something in there I should never have to get inside. The doors on the outside swing open and can use a garden rake for easy clean out of the bedding material. There is also a full size walk though door in the run.

    Great Video but I would have built a Bottom Trap door for Poop, pull the Pin and let her Fall...

      It would have fallen into the run and I would have to crawl under to clean it out. The way it is now I just drag it into the bucket of the tractor. I can clean it out and refill it in about 5 minutes. Your way would work great if I didn’t have the run going under the hen house
