I don't care what the haters think, Chicago in the 80's was amazing. Peter Cetera's unique voice and melancholy lyrics are perfect. There is an amazing tag at the end of that song that was cut off that is quentisentual Chicago.

    • @jamescastelli
      @jamescastelli 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The problem is, as amazing as it may be, it really wasn't the same band. On this song none of the brass (nearly half the band) are absent, replaced by orchestra. Robert Lamm was MIA, and it is a little cute of him to play along to keyboard parts he never recorded, or lip-sync vocals he didn't sing. This is more a construction of David Foster, the producer, who had a thing for rewriting or co-writing a band's material, and replacing members with session musicians. This song is basically a Peter Cetera solo song co-written with Foster. But technically it was released as Chicago, so there you go.

Yes, there is, Mustardseedish. It's a shame that's missing here. It's like a completely different song merged with this one. I had the album (yes, album . . . I'm that old) so that's the way I'm used to hearing this.

@@Dawnfrnj They were all good. iMho 😉
I think the problem is a lot of people got used to the band sounding a certain way and it changed. Yes, old Chicago was excellent ... but if you just take the post Terry Keth stuff at sound value, it was really good too. It was different, but it was good. (Music is subjective though - we can’t all like the same things)
I try not to make musical comparisons too often because when I do that, I feel that I miss out. I just like to listen to music and enjoy it.

They provided an introduction to a new style/ sound of music. Listening to them made me sway to their sound. Thanks for playing this song. This music took me back to yester-year. This was so nice. The group members in Chicago had advanced degree in music. After acquiring their degrees, these individuals decided to form this group, and to create their own style of music. "Smart", what can I say! That was real smart. Thanks again! Another song that's good and fun to listen to is "Saturday in the Park"!

Yeah you sound like the rock hall critics
If they retired when kath died
They make the hall 20 years earlier
But god forbid all the ballads #1 hits
      Critics hated them
      They were punished
      Same thing happens with
      Moody blues
& funk look & the gang
      Celebration
      Ruined their rock hall
      Induction
      Too much success
      Gets some bands punished
      I love the 70s too
      But don’t hate the 80s
Dude how many bands can have 3 decades if hits?
Chicago is on. A very short list the Moody’s
      Stones Aerosmith
      Maybe David Bowie
      Who else??

One of the most underrated chicago songs ever is southern california purples. Epic terry kath guitar solo in there and the rift throughout the whole song is badass too

Got a new one for ya, Jamal. This song is set on my alarm clock every morning. Great way to get fired up for a new day. Not well known, but a fine song. “Get Up” by The Kinks
    Keep up the good work!

Jamel, Az Yet also guested on a re-recording of Peter's "You're the Inspiration" around the same time their version of Hard to Say I'm Sorry came out. I would highly recommend it; the song got some radio play back in 1998 but it wasn't a huge hit so not as widely known as Hard to Say I'm Sorry. Your reaction vids are highly entertaining btw keep up the good work!

#Jamel_aka_Jamal ... I can still remember when this song came out.... At the time we had 3 Great Bands that were doing this kinda of Alternative Rock (Chicago, Journey, Foreigner), With Prince, Michael Jackson, Michael McDonald and waiting in the wings -- Prince, Jeffery Osbourne, Peabo Bryson, James Ingrams, Luther, New Editions... LOL What a time for Music in the 1970s & 80s!!!

it's not "alternative rock" it's as mainstream as it gets. "Siousie and the Banchees" were alternative.

What is ironic was when Chicago was talking about how they named their albums with the release of their third double album, Chicago III, they joked about going until releasing like Chicago 27, I think. Amazing to see how many they really did. I stopped buying their vinyl albums with Chicago VII but continued to listen to them through the 80s but was not big on buying their cassettes. Have replaced vinyl Carnegie Hall Live 4-record set with the CD version though. Still remember the day that I bought Chicago Transit Authority and realized it was the same band that had released Make Me Smile, Color My World, Does Anybody Know What Time It Is and 25 or 6 to 4 on Chicago II.

A very deep rabbit hole here, Terry as lead and Peter backup to Peter being lead after Terry's death. I got to see them twice in concert back in the 70s and 80s. Great music and tons of hits.
