Genesis was on a break because Phil had moved to Vancouver to try to patch up his crumbling family situation, and when it became clear that things were not gonna work out, he wrote a bunch of poems (for lack of a better description) as a way of dealing with it. Shortly after that, Genesis' manager was checking on him and saw his notebook. He pointed out to Phil that they would be great lyrics and he should write songs for them.

"You got to love yourself enough to know when enough is enough" -Jamel AKA Jamal. This really struck me tonight due to personal circumstances. Thank you.
What makes this song so powerful: 1) The constant underlying "war drum" sound. 2) The "build up" of not caring anymore as you reach the point of KNOWING it is about to end. 3) The "explosion" of not caring anymore because you want to destroy it all in your wake. 4) The "complex" emotions of frustration vs acceptance of a situation. 5) The "stream of calm" that flows as the realization that "not caring anymore" gives you freedom. 6) The "payback" of letting someone know that their "games and bs" simply don't work anymore.
Phil Collins is really good at recognizing dark emotions and channeling them into his music. One song that he made with Genesis that is super dark, but also pretty compelling, is "Mama".
"Mama" is, was and always will be my favorite. I've always wondered why it got so little recognition and air play. I'll never forget where I heard it first. 1986, An episode of "Magnum P.I."

But you're right, sometimes a person can lose themselves in a relationship. When that other person is too demanding, and not giving back as much as they take. This song and the lyrics sums up my 27 years of marriage, but I'm doing alright by myself! Cuz I don't care anymore. No more no more.
What makes this song so powerful:
1) The constant underlying "war drum" sound.
