    I recently had a shoot for a law firm. I had to take a lot of drone photos and videos of some roads. I had no idea how long it would take so I quoted it hourly. Very thankful I did as it took almost twice as long as I originally thought. I've definitely learned to get all details before quoting something and quote it hourly or daily if I don't know how long something will take.

      Good on you man! Covering yourself like that. That's funny it happened on that shoot, cuz it sounds pretty simple! But that happens to me sooooo much... I'm pretty much always under estimating how long something will take me LOL

    Depends on the deliverables but I would say probably between $5,500 - $7,500 (I know people charing like $10K to start on something like this but I'm not there yet lol) or if I was fresh and just getting start prob around $3K but back then I definitely didn't factor in my time in getting the client, having meetings, the time to edit, etc... I don't normally charge by the hour, I charge by the project and I itemize it outside of the client's view. I just break down what they are getting for what (I don't even include the camera package anymore unless they ask about it) But I'm more so building a video production company with contractors I use on gigs now as opposed to being hired as a DP only.

      I like that Eddie. That price range feels about right for this kind of video. And that's cool you don't even mention the camera package, a client like this isn't even going to know what that is lol

      I survived off of videography in the poorest state for 2 years: Mississippi. I worked at a production company during the week who regularly booked $10-$100k shoots. Then on the weekends I could usually make an extra $500 shooting (not editing) weddings. It’s possible man!

    Hey great video, I find these video great for someone that’s just starting out to learn more about shooting and learning what to charge.
    I’ve seen that you track a lot 😮of your work such as meetings, emails and editing . Should I do that to know what to charge even when I’m doing free projects ? And send a invoice even for free projects?

    • @Tommy_Beal
      @Tommy_Beal  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad to hear that Jan! Tracking is something I personally do to hold myself accountable. And I find it useful for accurately seeing how long things take. Cuz at the end of the day we are selling our time. I wouldn’t send an invoice to someone for a free project, but I would keep the data for myself, cuz when I do land a project like that in the future - I will have a lot better idea of how much time it will actually take me.

    Deployed my UWP-D27 with COS11 yesterday for the first time. I noticed one of my transmitters, the one paired as the second channel, was having a brief drop out every once in a while. Just a blip. Happening within 30 feet direct line of site, so signal strength shouldn’t have been a problem.
    Channel one was perfect the whole day. Never had this issue with my single UWP-D11 mics.
    Have you run into this at all with your D27 kit?

      thats weird. i haven’t run into that at all. how often are you resetting the nfc sync? i’ve been refreshing mine every time I’m at a new location, and I haven’t gotten any interference at all yet (even at a big baseball game i used them at)

      @@Tommy_Beal I did a scan and sync in the first location and then again at the second location after lunch when I noticed it.
      I’m going to try a factory reset and trouble shoot some more here later, but it was definitely weird. Swapped wires already to rule that out. Need to swap transmitters to channels and see if it’s the RX somehow being weird. It is entirely possible it is just a bad TX. I don't do media, but i found in other consultancy/product work, that it does not matter how much time you spend.
    The customer primarily cares about the result (as relevant for their needs) and what they think the market rate is for that.
    They don't care about what it costs you in time, training or gear to produce it.
    That said, sometimes, the customer thinks that measuring your hours spend is the product they want, rather than the film at the end.
    You can use hours internally to estimate your cost, but the price you present to the costumer should be based on market rate for the product delivered (combined with the customers need for this product).
    Though i guess if you're just delivering hours on someone elses project, fair enough.

    • @Tommy_Beal
      @Tommy_Beal  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good points man. They really have no clue how much time most things take, they are probably normally just looking at the result, and trying to get that result for a price that they want. The market rates for the film industry are usually pretty steep for a small business owner to afford, so usually we end up working for bigger corporations.

      When i did consultancy work or repair jobs, i would give a fixed quote for the work. The quote was based on what it was worth to the customer. Then it was my job to be as efficient with my own time to maximize profit from that price. If something went wrong, it would be my problem. If something went super easy, that's my earning.
      I think that's fair, because as an expert with many jobs under the belt vs a customer with 0 experience, it's my responsibility to correctly estimate the cost of the job. It would not be right to charge by the hour and let the customer try to figure out how many hours is needed.

    • @Tommy_Beal

      @@meanmarine24 I like that mindset. I’m still learning how long it actually takes me to do projects though. I used to work at a production company, and didn’t know how long it really took me to create a video, but now that I’m a freelancer, I’m learning to estimate that more accurately. But I like your mindset, thats my problem, not the customer’s.

    Great video, thank you Tommy! To answer the last question: For around 70 hours of work and multiple formats of video, I'd £4,300.00 or $5,375.00. That's for everything, excluding travel. Wether or not I'd get that would be another question, different market over here!

    I’ve heard of people who have their prices set to cover a specific amount of time, and then have stipulations for over time working. So maybe when you’re presenting your prices, instead of giving a price for a 2 day edit and saying “this is what I’ll charge for an edit” you can say “this price will cover x amount of pre-production and post production, and excess time will be communicated and billed at final invoicing”
    This might cause clients to want to rush certain things to save money though

      @@Tommy_Beal yeah, predicting exactly what to charge on the front end can be almost impossible if you’re taking new clients and there’s always the risk if overcharging and leaving a poor taste in the client’s mouth. I think charging some things in a rears is a fair way to ensure your fair share.
      It’s also a great way to make clients happy and more likely to recommend you because it gives you something you can waive while not directly eating into your actual living. And clients absolutely love seeing waived charges on invoices

    That job must be at least $4,000 but if you charged $5,000, you wouldn't be robbing them, I'd say. Reading the other estimates, it seems like $5,000 to $6,000 at a pinch would be achievable.
