I have a 2014 Mac Book Air 11 inch which I use ALL THE TIME. I love it. I have bad arthritis, and the lighter weight, smaller size is very helpful. I am an older woman, (76) and lack some technical skills, but I find this machine easy to use. I bought it new at the Apple store with a magnetically attached charger. I had to replace the first one because it bent at the connection and the wires twisted. They told me at the Apple store I could only use a magnetic charger, so I bought a second one at $80 from Apple. The second one twisted and broke within a year. I feel foolish in that I didn't know I could use a regular USB C port charger and cord which is a LOT cheaper. Anyway, I love my little computer--it has allowed a shut-in to live a richer life, more connected to the world. During the worst of the pandemic, I would have died without it. Also very important, the folks at Apple Support are amazing. They have the patience of Job and are very kind.

This machine is supported up to Big Sur, I suggest you update it to the latest supported software and then review it. I had the 2014 Air up until 2 weeks ago, even after using my M1 Air, the 2014 Air feels very smooth and brand new, although Big Sur certainly degraded performance and battery life a bit
That’s why I won’t upgrade the macOS. Apple is quite crooked with degraded performance. Monterey also doesn’t do much but just lowers performance overall.
My macbook air 2014 still works just fine man. The only thing is the battery and replaced the charger but all in all it's still works ( I guess the 8gb ram makes it still useful this 2024)
I bought my wife an iPad, because she didn’t want a Mac anymore, so I took her 2014 11-inch MBA to play with. Reformatted it, logged in as me and it’s far faster and more respectable than I was expecting. Daily I drive an M1 Max for music purposes, and this 256GB/4GB 2014 model can’T Handel those things of course, but for just day-to-day work, it’s really cute and honestly, very usable. I was genuinely surprised about that. I forgot how nice it was to carry and just grab under your arm and walk around with. Surprising little machine and for being so old, it really holds up well. I can even run a windows 7 VM on it using VMWare fusion without much slowdown at all, which seems utterly ridiculous when you think about it haha.

Even funnier, the new base model of the M2 machines still come with 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM. It is so funny that some things stayed the same even after almost a decade. Even the MacBook Air had that SD card slot back then, LOL.
Yes that’s quite incredible that apple gets away with it. Didn’t know the base model comes with 256. For 2014 128 was base model. However if I’m being completely honest, MacBooks are worth their price and quite often last longer than a phone does. My main machine is m1 MacBook Pro got that in April 2021. Battery life is just 6 hours on heavy usage but oh well.

I have this same computer but the latest update is Catalina. When I did the big sur update my computer crashed and I had to start over again. Thank god I had backed up everything. Now still using Catalina OS. So is it still safe to use if I don’t update. I’m so scared to do so again.

You need an apple id which works with ios and macOS both. You may install office but it’s additional money. Rest apps are free. Can’t upgrade ram or ssd. It is efficient for zoom and office. No cons for a student. Works better than a new windows as it has macOS. The camera can be a little unclear.
