    Bought my early 2014 11" brand new when it just came out. Got the i5/4gb RAM model and it still runs great today. Mainly use it for tinkering with Python and some browsing/youtubing whenever I don't feel like sitting behind my iMac at the desk. 10/10 would still recommend buying this machine today as long as your use case isn't too demanding. Awesome compact and VERY lightweight machine.

      Thanks for sharing and watching. 4GB is tough nowadays but for small stuff I'm sure it will work good. I always say 8 min if you were buying today but back then 4 GB was standard for sure. Thanks again.

    Travel is exactly why I bought this laptop. I have the 2013 8 GB 256 SSD and it works like a dream when I am on the road. Like you said, I didn’t want to have to worry about my more expensive laptops in case something happened while I was on vacation. This gets the job done for light tasks like email, writing on the go, and web browsing. Even though I have a MacBook Pro and Lenovo 9i, this is the one I find myself using most of the time.

      Same reason I just bought one, a 2015, 8GB, 256SSD. Small, light, and nifty, fits in my duffel bag, performs reasonably well to do common tasks, not glitchy like Windows, and being so cheap I don't have to be too concerned about it as I hate travelling with expensive stuff. Also seems like a good entry level Mac as I've never had one before, only ever used Mac in VMware. I was actually eyeing these MacBook Air's when they were new and kind of always wanted one anyway.

      It's not the fastest with that type of work but could work. It depends on what you are doing in photoshop etc. As you can see in my video it can do 1080 and 4K editing but would I use it for my main editor maybe not. For the price (under $200) though it is pretty good. Thanks for watching.

      Yes, I would really just go with the M1 Air as these are older systems and the batteries don't last that long etc. and performance is not nearly as good. If you do get one for $160, give or take, they are good for that price but not going to be the fastest systems out there.

      I would do some searches on Google to see if it can run that since I don't use that. I still recommend going with 8 GB and you can find them for maybe $120 so it's worth the upgrade. I picked up a 2014 MacBook Pro with 8 GB ram for like $127 (watch that video) and that would be way faster than the Air also.

    • @craigneidel

      Ok, but I think I said you really need the 8 GB ram for most of todays apps etc. You can go Catalina but you might experience some slowdowns etc. with 4 GB ram. It may still work good for you so try it out but it will be hard to do video editing and have a ton of apps open. These are not really made for video editing anyhow but if you are just doing general websurfing and email etc. I should be just enough.

    I miss the Macbook Air 11. I still have mine (2015, i5, 8go). I'm a commuter and I'm daily writing markdown text on it (+ mail / browsing & basic tasks). I understand that Apple want sell iPad to us for years but nothing compares the 11' form factor.
    MBA M1 is a great device (screen, trackpad and battery life). But when you have to carry your computer all day long, size matters.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the 11 is nice but the M1 isn't really that large and the new M2 13" is very light. I carry the 15" and I can barely notice it in my bag. Apple might bring back an 11 inch in the near future as I have been reading about it but it would be more for competition against the Chromebooks in schools so be lower end.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You would be better off with a newer Air for sure like the M1 even. They are incredible machines and I have videos on that one also. But, if you want to spend under $200 then this is an option. Just make sure the software can run your apps (version of the OS) etc. It can still run fairly recent OS so I do think it's ok now but in a few years it may not be getting same security updates. If you have $800 then get the M1 Air but if you have $200 start with this just make sure you get the SSD in it and also at least 8 GB Ram. It's not going to be the best for photoshop but will run for sure - just not as snappy as modern systems. The M1 would blow through stuff so if you are getting for a job etc, then I would spend a little more. Even an older iMac (if you don't need laptop) have better GPUs and would also work well with photoshop - like an iMac of 2014 or later, 16 GB Ram, and an SSD (key is ssd) never a spinning drive. Thanks.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you have 8GB it really helps the speed of these systems out and 4GB will struggle a bit. But the CPU and disk are pretty snappy and for that money not a bad pick up. Thanks.

Needless to say: it was a nice system at one time, but is severely lacking when compared to the new Macs, especially with video editing/rendering/exporting, but is fun to play around with as your early-2014 McBook Air. Why not - here some info from Google - Your best way to get started with Python on macOS is through the IDLE integrated development environment, see section The IDE and use the Help menu when the IDE is running. If you want to run Python scripts from the Terminal window command line or from the Finder you first need an editor to create your script.
