US Naval Academy Ship Selection: An Inside Look

- US Naval Academy senior Midshipmen who are a part of the surface warfare community choose the first ships and homeports they will serve on after graduation and commissioning. Men’s lacrosse captain Chris Fennell and women’s basketball captain Sarita Condie tell the PLN what it’s like to go through the process of ship selection as a Midshipman.

From the USNA website:
Red placards were available only to those midshipmen service assigned to nuclear surface warfare only (they will attend Navy nuclear power training upon earning their surface warfare pin), and green placards could be chosen only by midshipmen assigned to the information warfare community.
White ship placards were available to conventional or engineering duty officer option selectees only. Yellow placards were also available to nuclear surface warfare selectees; if no white placards were left for that specific ship, yellow placards could also be chosen by conventional or engineering duty officer option selectees.
Blue placards - known as “blue chips” - were available only to midshipmen who, based on performance during their summer cruise, were awarded a reserved spot on that specific ship by the commanding officer. If the midshipman did not pick their blue chip, the ship name was replaced with a white placard, making it available to other midshipmen who had not yet chosen.
I never knew that this happened. It would be interesting to know which ship has the highest favor among graduates.
This is great to see the Navy's way of handling officer assignments. Being an Army Infantry captain it was quite different for us picking our branch within the Army, then to units. Each one of these Navy officers have certainly earned this honor and I wish them the best in their careers. 🇺🇸

Reminds me a lot of my daughter's class getting their branches (Army). But they only got to request. The Army made the selection. Many happy kids, some not so happy.
For those asking about the coloured placards, it's as you would guess, based on merit.
- White means only conventional SWOs and SWO/Engineering Duty Officer (EDO) options can pick that ship.
- Blue means that ship has been blue chipped and only the midshipman who received the blue-chip can select that ship. If the midshipmen does NOT want to select that ship, the placard will be replaced with a white placard, but only after the blue chipped midshipman has selected a different platform.
- Red means only the Nuclear SWOs, aka SWO Nukes, can select that ship.
- Yellow means that a conventional SWO, a SWO/EDO, or a SWO Nuke can select that platform.
- Green means that only the SWO/Information Warfare Community (IWC) options can select that platform.
It used to be somewhat similar in the enlisted ranks. If there were 20 people in your "A school" class, the #1 grad would get first pick of all 20 sets of orders. It gave a great deal of incentive to do well.

It’s a vital job they just have a little less freedom, admirals are usually on the ship so you have to have all of your stuff in tip top condition 24/7, they are too big to pull into a lot of ports so you get less shore time often, and since there’s so many people for each job you don’t get as much job experience as you would on a smaller craft. But we definitely need men and women to step up and do these jobs and keep everything from the reactors to the catapults running.
An Ensign will get stuck in a minor assignment, miopitic in experience and unnoticed on a carrier. The small the better. Fewer offices means more duties and responsibilities. Also, better liberty ports. Lot more ports can handle small ships. Carriers anchor out and 6k sailors overwhelm most cities. Smaller ships go pier side and 200 sailors don't overwhelm. Was on 3 ships in 10 years active and 10 reserve. They were a CG, CVN and FFG. FFG was the best Sea duty.
