It seems that the evolution of ham gear is happening faster! I wonder if the maintenance can keep up with it. I hope that the result is not disposable ham gear.
Its hard because the software and the hardware evolve at different rates, but I'm right there with you. One of the things I love about ham radio is that even the old boat anchors get you on the air and just work. Its never "disposable" in the sense of an old PC not being able to be relevant in today's world.
Great Video thanks a lot :-). I like my X6100, the X6200 is a little too expensive, after tax. I think they decided to reduce the Output Power a little bit, as far as i know, some people used FT8 on the X6100 with max output and destroyed the finals. To prefent overheating, they reduced the Output of the X6200 which comes with FT8.
Looks nice but no features worth replacing KX2 and IC705 that I already have. I was hoping for a small 50W POTA radio. I get 4x+ the contacts on CW at 35W vs 10W and I have decided I rather carry more weight and get more contact vs QRP and saving about 10LBs or so.
They've gone from a sheet metal case to a molded plastic front. That takes an investment in designing molds and isn't cheap. Xiegu is putting some effort into this line of radios.
Looks very neat and if I didn't have a 705 and was looking for a portable radio it would certainly be high on the short list. The built in WFView server and built in FT8 decode have a lot of potential both at home and for portable operation (Make it easier to operate FT8 on a phone/tablet or craptop). The built in sound card for USB to PC is very nice (705 has the same and it makes everything dead simple) The way you change settings is the number one thing I don't like about it. So close to being a perfect option for portable ops but then they went and did 5W on the internal battery. 5W makes sense for something like the QCX-mini but I want 10 from an option like this.
Being on my 2nd 6100 (finals failed on the first) it will take a lot to convince me that more money and less power is a winner. It looks so similar to the 6100 in operation I don't see any advantage. Perhaps they've enhanced performance by getting rid of birdies and broadcast band bleed through.

Thats a hard question. Xiegu has a history of releasing radios that have bugs and are missing features and the then fixing them after a few rounds of sales. I can't predict what Xiegu will create/fix, but the 6100's clock started a while back and will likely run out soon. While the 6200's clock is just getting started. Other than a detachable battery, I don't really see any advantage in it over the 6100. I have a 6100 and an IC705, so between them, I don't see this being much of an advancement. Personally I think they should have kept the power rating, and gone to a touch screen to compete with ICOM more.
They disabled IQ out on newer firmwares. It's a way to export the I and Q portions of the radio's reception to a computer for display - think SDR dongle

That panel on the bottom, I'm thinking that could be a nice spot to attach a custom mounting bracket. 🤔 The 6100 has no good way to mount it to anything, so to me this looks promising.
So unless the receiver audio is significantly better and the frontend overloading issue has been resolved I can only really consider it a downgrade from the x6100. Other than a detachable battery, I don't really see any advantage in it over the 6100. I have a 6100 and an IC705, so between them, I don't see this being much of an advancement. Personally I think they should have kept the power rating, and gone to a touch screen to compete with ICOM more.
Agreed!
What do you use the IQ out for? I have an X6100 and have used the crap out of it and never bothered with the IQ out.
They disabled IQ out on newer firmwares. It's a way to export the I and Q portions of the radio's reception to a computer for display - think SDR dongle
Wonder if user and password is the same also they say the Direct rf sampling improves rx/tx wonder if it sounds better thanks for the review shame top plate was blank .
I'll find out, stay tuned and thanks for watching.
Thanks for your review. It might be better than the X6100, but I don't see it competing the Icom IC-705 in any way.
Agreed
Thanks so much. Is there a way to add an amplifier to boost power?
Sure is, stay tuned for a video.
Curious, is the NFM RX fixed or is it still distorted by LO leaking?
I'll find out
@@temporarilyoffline nice one dude. The direct conversion nature of the 6100 killed NFM receive which was a shame. I have been trying to look at a modification to resolve it but if the 6200 has the same issue it’s a bit of a deal breaker
Where did you get that BNC cap?
Here is a 🔗 amzn.to/3KfpPIT
Geez, it must have been hard to connect a temporary antenna before you demonstrated the features!
Thanks for noticing, most people would have just been rude about it.
Mornin, Steve. Looking forward to this
Me too! Thanks for watching
I can't wait for more videos!!!🖖
You Bet!
The Playlist grows!
Needs Must.
disappointing, what would be the reason to upgrade at this point?
It's prettier!
I would like to know if the mic works on the x6100.
I'll check it out. "Probably"
Iam looking for about your products place lace me a massage.when I post this when I post this, Iam looking for more information on this. Much one run there is and how or woork .
Hello Edward, there is a link in the description for more info.
Great review, not sure if it’s going to replace my x6100 but still an option for someone looking for a first qrp radio.
I'm not sure if there is a reason to upgrade if you have the 6100. It's kinda like upgrading to the latest iPhone.
Nice looking radio, I just wish they would put the tuner and xmitter from the G90 in the same form factor. 73
Would be nice!
Can't wait for the follow up in depth 6200 videos
I'm gonna be busy...
Hi!We have a little cheaper -780 bucks in Moscow, on pre-order..Only the handles and the screen, the plastic and the buttons were impressed-on the contrary, they were not impressed...I think the power will be "inflated" to at least 10 watts during the year and after a couple of firmware updates. The fm band appeared, the matter remained with the flashlight :)73!
Hello Moscow! Interesting differences
Tuner board I was guessing screw in key kit
Same.
That panel on the bottom, I'm thinking that could be a nice spot to attach a custom mounting bracket. 🤔
The 6100 has no good way to mount it to anything, so to me this looks promising.
Definitely room to make it your own
So unless the receiver audio is significantly better and the frontend overloading issue has been resolved I can only really consider it a downgrade from the x6100. But hey, maybe that FPGA means that it can do some more fancy DSP magic. Not sure if that’s worth the $200 price increase when that’s basically the price of a FT-710…
Yeah. Very close to the 710 price and not as feature packed.
@@temporarilyoffline well I am already thinking of designing another radio after I release the one I showed you at hamvention and it will probably be and SDR transceiver. I’m planning on 20 watts and not costing $800…
@@JonathanKayne good plan, looking for to it!
Thanks for the review!
My pleasure!
Steve scored the first batch! OG 👍 👍
Excellent!
Hard work pays off
Us poor's slubbing along with our G90s will have to vicariously enjoy the cool kid gear through your videos
I'm hear for ya!
The G90 is cool kids gear 😉
@CoaxAndCampstools yeah, that's what we keep telling ourselves. 😊
at least you have a G90.. i am just staring at the screen with no money and now HAM license..
@@warmfreezeskill issue.
Oh, thank god you heard me! Was screaming at you, VKB!! VKB!! VKB!!! ....ahh, there you go!
It was rough, but we got it done!
@@temporarilyoffline Lol... nice.
Very nice video. Perhaps someone might know if R1CBU software will work on the x6200. Not a deal breaker but I would like to know. 73 k2gk
Tested it on the live stream tonight. Won't work. The receiver is a different type.
Lucky you!! great first impressions !
Thanks! 😊
Less power (a bit), still no touchscreen, yet more expensive! If it had 2/70 I'd buy it tomorrow, but I don't see it's an upgrade over the 6100 ATM.
Agreed. Would be great to have 2/70
8:52 wait I can go back in time this is awesome!!!!!!!!! LOL :)
Life saver!
Is this the ultimate?
Maybe not
Right!
Don't understand why this was made... maybe it's just some fine tuning by xiegu and radioddity from all us betatesters with the 6100 that way they could release a more stable radio?
Could be.
I really hope they fixed the bugs of the X6100. I’m really looking into one of these.
I'm sure they fixed some... And made new ones.
S3 of noise with no antenna in ??
Right!
