I like the audio from the X6200 better, a bit more 'mellow', not tinny like the X6100. Thanks for taking the time to do this test!

In addition to being thin and tinny, the 6100 also has some kind of early reflection, echoey sound that is ghastly. Everybody tells me I sound like I'm in a barrel. Thankfully, I mostly do digital modes when operating portable.
I'd be extremely disappointed in the 6100, if I hadn't bought it so cheaply. ($325, B-stock unit.) At that price, I'm okay with its many shortcomings!

Nice video and good real-world test of the two radios and the possible combinations. Thank you!

I think, so far the X6200 is not worth the upgrade (particularly not at that price). The difference in the audio is - in my opinion - way not that big to justify an upgrade.

I’d like to see the same comparison on receive including how to set up the radio to optimise receive audio and visual settings

Great comparison... In my personal opinion 6100 have more high modulation and 6200 have more bass and pleasure to listen, think more sota operator thinking it's better the firs one for been listened but again still prefer the 6200, when with the original mike have noticed even the mic of 6100 are with high tone modulation! In the old analog 80 era was the difference from astatic to turner! Or like and Kenwood 950sdx vs yaesu ft1000mp 73 de iz3qvb

I thought the 6100 sounded better. The 6200 sounded clipped to me. But each to their own I suppose.

The difference is relatet to that the X6100 transmitt with a higher bandwith compared with the x6200 - which also seen in the spectrum. I.e. this is not primary related to the audio chain but to the transmitting bandwith. X6100 is therefore more easy to copy which is extra important with QRP transmissions.

    Hi Paul,
thank you for this nice comparison in detail. My opinion: the modulation of the x6200 sounds much more balanced with the external original mike and also the internal mike, both of them have enough punch for DX - in my opinion the mike gain could even be reduced a bit for the external microphone 😎 I think the company has put a lot into the development of the new x6200 - it‘s a very nice trx and worth the money 😎 Tnx es yy 73 Claudia DF1UX

excellent video, so for me the microphones perform better if each used for the appropriate radio, in any case both radios modulate almost the same with their external microphone, the 6100 if used with the microphone of the 6200 has the lowest audio, excellent trial.

I will stick with my Xeigu G90 and IC-7000 for portable. FT-710 for base station. For good DX results it is more about band conditions and then your receiver and the Operator at the other end of the line. Tnx for another nice video. 73. N9XY

Hi Paul. Audio sounds better on the x6200. Shame the price is steep and 8 watts. I know the watts you wouldn't know the difference but thought they may of gone higher. Fingers crossed the x6300 is 20w.
    Great video 73

6100 is best on external mic. For QRP, you don’t want a mellow sound. You need punchy sound. 6200 internal mic was best

Interesting but I think in all the tests the 6100 was a bit over driven, running lower mic gain would have gotten it closer to the 6200. You can see it is over driven when you look at the spectrum display. The 6100 signal was also a bit stronger and it almost sounder like it was overloading the RX, maybe if you did TX into a dummy load you could eliminate that.

The X6100 had massive problems with the internal microphone. Yours is among the best I've ever heard actually. You got a good one.
The X6100 internal microphone would usually cut out and become unresponsive after level around 35... The X6100 also had FM TX problems as well.

It is interesting to look closely at the tx waterfalls... The entire TX spectrum of the 6100 seems 100Hz higher than the 6200 (you can see both on the screen at the same time at 5:47 ). This may account a bit for the 6100 sounding "tinnier".

X6100 for the win. The x6200 had a lot of digital artifacts and didn't sound as natural.

6100 is clearer, crisper. 6200 sounds muted, muffled. more bass.

6200 sounds more pleasing, but the radios produce a similar audibility for receiving stations. The 6100 may even do a little better under difficult conditions.
BTW It looks like you were using the same mic on the radios? It would have been nice to use the factory mic, since they are different...
