All wild canids are like that. Even cheetahs. They are curious and playful about the new funny creature. It's humans that are too stupid to know how to conduct themselves around wild animals to not make themselves be attacked. Dogs read body language and expressionism, and your scent. Anything you can think about doing the dog already knows about just by looking at you. If you are afraid, they know it and will see you as a target. Just be a calm, not afraid, and do not make jumpy rapid movements, let them smell you and inspect you first. If you're not a threat, they will not be fearful of your company and will keep an eye on you but will not be aggressive of your company. Also these dogs are so light you can just pick them up and carry them off, so they are one of the very least scary animals to meet in Africa.

@@MrWolfSnack I still think that an adult human male around 1,80 m tall, standing up, is still out of their league. What matters is always the first impression. From their perspective, 60-70 cm from the ground, we are a huge unfamiliar beast(or at least less than all the other wild species) and they would avoid any sort or risk to put in danger any member of the pack, instead of some assault. And the big difference with all the herbivores they use to hunt, is that indeed we have our eyes in front of our faces, giving us a binocular vision, not sided. This trait in nature is EXTREMELY important because it marks pretty much the difference between ground predators and preys and how they recognize the opposite, even from different species, as soon as they eyes meet. A hyena marks a leopard as predator and not as prey, even before showing any other sign of fighting back, thanks to the look that the leopard gives it back. This is the first approach between two carnivores from different species that meet each other. Unless the difference in size is too in favor of one of the two, if the other carnivore looks back to first, standing still instead of escaping and giving hits back, they instantly recognize each other as treats, but not anymore as hunter and prey. To imagine how a wild dog would react, hungry or not, if it might come across a 30-40 years old human male, try to imagine Yourself exchanging a gaze with a beast tall 5-6 meters (keeping the proportion 60 cm wild dog, 1,80 m) raising your head toward his sight. Obvioulsy knowing almost nothing about it. Even if with other two friends with you covering your back, would you dare attacking that beast without calculating any other possibility to avoid the fight?. This is how you have to think in natural enviroments when it comes to carnivores behaviours. LOOKING BACK and SIZE are always a factor. Because in their mind the combination of these two indicates approximatively how much effort and risk the attempt to attack costs for them.
Naturally all of this is applied to mammals species. With reptiles is all another story

This is sort of how early men were able to domesticate the ancestor of the modern domesticated dog (who was also ancestor of wolves). See those wild dogs are very curious creatures and they don't show fear of the men but yet keep a good distance just to be safe. I bet the ancestors of today modern dog were curious as well and simply follow a group of hunters around and discover that they leave plenty of leftover bones with meat after they hunt. Thus a relationship was born.

In evolutionary terms, you need dogs who didnt fear humans (hormone expression) and humans that where intrigued by dogs. The humans would have prefered affectionate, dogs with humans traits, e.g. smiles cuddles etc etc. Those ones where kept and bred... eventually many moons later, dogs ahave evolved by mans selection. All attributed in dogs that humans like are there because humans bred those. People think of dogs as humans often but really they have evolved on a niche by us to portray those characteristics, but they are not truly there, they are just animals, dumb by comparison.

Think about it: a regular guy with a weigh of 80 kilograms (with no weapons or some kind of protection) against five or six of these dogs is not match for them. The fact is that they are so used to seeing humans in their every day lives. From when they are born all they see are truck loads of tour groups stopping by taking pictures and what not. They grow their whole life watching humans on the side lines watching them back. They don't mess with each other. That's why it's rare to see Lions, Hyenas, or many other predators jumping on these tour vans and dragging a person out. They're more curious about humans than anything else.

Been lucky to have great sightings (though in vehicle) in Madikwe (they were running - hard to keep up) and in Botswana on the Kwara Concession with a whole pride including 12 pups. The alpha female was golden and they had a kill right in front of us, afterwards they toyed with a hippo who finally got too annoyed and waded back into his/her pond. Incredible! Here’s what to know about dogs that are wild or feral.
NEVER RUN FROM THEM! They will then attack.
It stimulates their hunting desire. In the same way that turning your back on a Big cat does. If you own a dog, you will know this.
Because those people showed no fear, the dogs showed no interest. I guarantee if they ran, they would be chased.
Dogs are pack creatures. They have a hierarchy that extends outside their species. (Hence why they obey/don’t obey certain people).

Something has been instilled in dogs and humans along the way, although they are untamed and still scared of the humans in the wild their is definitely a mutual love and trust between us as humans and dogs. It’s very common for wild dogs to be curious of humans and to be friendly. I can imagine it was quite easy for our ancestors to domesticate them.

Lions don't often take people. Humans are not their usual prey and don't look like most of their other prey species, so they're very cautious around people and are easily spooked. Also, the guides and animal spotters on the property on which safariLIVE is filmed usually have a really good handle on where all of the prides are at any point in time.
The last time I was in Africa I went on a walking safari and I was surprised at how frightened of us all of the animals were. Although it is possible to get very close to almost everything in Africa while in a vehicle, at least in areas with regular tourist traffic, those same animals freak out when they see humans on foot because it is foreign to them. Almost all of the animals we saw that day were off in the distance, running away, with the exception of the white rhinos. I would still highly recommend a walking safari to anyone, though, for there are other things to see that one rarely experiences from a vehicle (tracks and signs, sounds and smells, small animals like reptiles etc).
Even the wild dogs in this video were noticeably nervous and had one of the guys so much as coughed they would have bolted, yet those same dogs can be approached in a vehicle without any reaction from them at all. To your original question: They were also sitting ducks for wild dogs, which are extremely efficient predators (far more successful than lions on a per-hunt basis).

    • @jamesconnolly5723
      @jamesconnolly5723 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

They can hear very well.. In fact, their hearing is one of their strongest attributes along with excellent endurance, intelligence, quickness, and agility. When cameramen leave their vehicle running while filming the sound of the engine can allow other predators, such as lions, to get close to the wild dogs without the wild dogs being able to hear the lions coming... This puts the wild dogs at a disadvantage and I get irritated and upset when cameramen do it..

I love wild dogs. When I was growing up in the seventies we used to have packs of dogs that would roam the streets. They would be strays or dogs that owners had let out while they were at work. I tell my kids about it and they don't believe me :) but it was just a different time. The point being some of these dogs roaming our streets were a lot more dangerous to humans than the ones in this video :) It must have been a great day to see these wonderful animals on foot. They are just stunning.

In Texas I was wandering through the woods and heard growling. My car was a good ways off, but I decided to go back to it. I counted 7 then realized they were not tame dogs....they were wild and very angry. I ran fast as I could, got to my car, got in and started up the car. They jumped on my hood. They were biting my tires....I drove off with the pack chasing the car. When I got home I told Grandpa about it and he and several other men said these were the ones they had been looking for. They had been killing cows and goats. They found the pack...got 4 of them. I never went back there.

Remember if a predator gets injured that means they can't feed. which is clearly not worth the risk. They, like all species in Africa were clearly aware of what humans on foot are and the potential harm that could be inflicted on them. Human silhouette in wilderness is distinctive and unique and all species either run away from humans on foot or are super wary
