    I just wanted to say thank you Jeff so much for this video. I was able to apply this technique to a garage door for my parents and saved them over $600. Their door had froze to the garage floor and the opener shredded the door. I was able to have them just buy a new door with no windows at a fraction of the cost and reuse the windows from the other door that else wise was still perfectly good.

    I was just looking at lights for my doors. I thought, it really can’t be that easy! But you have shown me that it is. Thank you. I figured there had to be some insulation issues, some pain in the butt process to it. My daughter laughs at me because I spend so much time watching theses videos, but I am learning so much.

      @@pierre-marcrioux5015 It went really well! Window took a few weeks to arrive through Home Depot (we weren't lucky enough to have a HD that carries them in stock), but it really was a easy as he made it seem! I used a level and carpenter's pencil to draw lines and make sure I didn't cut the hole out crooked, but other than that and taking the door off the hinges to lay flat for orbital sanding/painting, I just used the tools he did and followed his exact procedure!

      That's cool. I put blinds on my door window. But security wise, I had to get a deadbolt that needs a key on the inside and outside.

    • @spicynoodle4317
      @spicynoodle4317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Gandoff2000 If it’s a front door I recommend to get a keyed outside lock only on your front door. You don’t want to lock yourself in if there is a fire or some other emergency in your house. To address the lack of security with windowed doors you can apply security film to your window in your door to reinforce it against forced entry. Also swap out the 1” screws in your door hinges and strike plate with 3” screws.

    Hi Jeff - this was great. I’ve had an old 6 panel steel door on my house for 25 years. Nothing wrong with it. I was looking to replace the whole door to update it which means, as you know, to hang a new one plus the cost. I have been looking at this method, and since this video, I’m going this route. I’m going to save a bunch of time and money and get the same result. Thanks as always.

    This video came at a great time .. we recently have sold our house and have bought a bigger home that's better suited for our family, it has alot of work done to it including windows & doors. But the door to the patio is a half window and I wanted to get a new door with a full window to make it feel more like a patio style door. This video has shown me that I can get a look I want without having to get a hole new doors and could do it in short time period.
    Thanks!

      Oh yeah... Jeff is definitely a Dewalt guy! I have a love/hate relationship with Ryobi as I've already purchased more than a dozen Ryobi tools and the tools work great but I absolutely hate their batteries! If I were to start over today, I'd absolutely invest in Makita as I love both their tools and batteries. I really have been thinking about moving away from Ryobi for some months now... Makita looks to be my favorite brand right now.

    Too good to be true. I watched this vid and thought it was a great idea, but also thought it strange that in all my years of roaming the aisles of Home Depot, Lowe's, and Menards, I had never noticed door lites. So this morning I went out and visited all three of those stores. Not only did they not have any, the individuals in the door departments had no idea what I was talking about. Lowe's and Menards, in fact, referred me to electrical, and at HD I pretty much just got a blank stare. At all three places I did attempt an explanation of what I was talking about, you know, educating and spreading knowledge, but suspect it quickly got filed in the Useless Information folder. I did some searching online too, and found no lites at these three stores. eBay and Amazon had a couple of kinda-sorta lites, but not much. A couple of other online web sites did have a good selection exactly as described in the vid, but the one site I took a quick glance at started pricing at $800. Door lites must be only available in Canada.

    Where can you purchase a half lite like that? That would be perfect to update my main front door without a full replacement.

    I went to a glass shop last week to get regular thin replacement pane glass for a broken light. They were closed for covid and it pissed me off. I did not think of this at all for some reason. I am shopping and ordering today for this project. Thanks for this. What luck covid has brought me.

    Since I’m an automotive painter at a shop I would spray with car paint. Stronger with a lot of UV protection. I did a matte black front door. Came out awesome.

    what type of drill would you recommend for drilling through steel doors? would a normal impact drill be fine?

      It will work if you have a good bit. But it will fight with you a little as you get to the other side. Cheers!

    Jeff, I noticed when you cut open the door that it looked like polystyrene insulation. My doors look identical to what you have. Does putting in a "light" have any impact on the thermal capabilities of the door?

      Of course. Glass can't insulate like 1.5 inches of foam.
