This is the hardest instrument part in this song by far, never heard any drummer play anything remotely close to this. It's so creative and idiosyncratic, the variety of fills, beautiful drumming.
Had a cool encounter with Alan White at a music store I managed in Columbus, Ohio, Fall of 2000. He was in Columbus to attend the US MNT(soccer) World Cup qualifier vs Costa Rica at MLS team Columbus Crew Stadium located close to Ohio State Fairground. To kill time-it was a slow day-we talked about music, Association Football, people and music influences; he mentioned that he'd come up thru Man City's youth football program but upon breaking a leg, opted for his other passion; music. He definitely made a wise choice. He's a "natural." Great feel and groove. I remember playing a newly released Sandy Denny collection, Fairport Convention, Traffic, Kelly Willis, Faces and a host of other artists. He bought several CDs and left at my end of shift; I had family responsibilities needing attention. I watched the game on ESPN that night, hoping to see him in the stadium. He mentioned that his Dad was a US citizen and that he tried to attend the US team's matches when recording and touring allowed. I wished him all the best and godspeed. It appears family and his totality as a person have taken precedence over being a "rock star." Good on him!
thank you for posting this. White was by far the best drummer Oasis ever had, and Noel did a huge disservice to the band for sacking him over comments that were barely critical of the band's dynamic. Something about how he didn't like his drumming in DYKWIM? being overdubbed with a loop. That song is massive and White could do both massive as well as stuff like this, so why wouldn't he be upset over that? Plus the comments came around 2004, 7 years after BHN was released...NG messed up by letting him walk.
Alan's good but my vote for their best drummer has to go to Zak Starkey. Zak just has a great feel and a great groove to his playing but he could also really hammer it up when the band needed him to. I'll say this about Oasis though; they had some really good drummers.
Alan White is a genius, and drummers after he left couldn't nail the drum parts, he really brought Oasis together and made them capable of big shows in a way they couldn't before. Morning Glory is an example of a drum part that doesn't follow the song in a traditional way, he almost plays off beat.
thanks for posting this...NG never ever mentions the contribution of the drums for this track. Such a busy but smooth and laid back rhythm for the pace of the song. In my opinion it makes all the difference. Elevates the track from a slow acoustic ballad to a foot tapper..which, when added to the melancholy lyric and melody pushes it into a sound all of its own
Alan white's drumming is The only drumming I Can listen to without any music. His drumming is like phrases of melody. Noel really screwed up Oasis When he sacked him. He is The most talented musician Oasis' ever have had.
Noel never sacked Allan white he sacked Tony mccaroll. Allan white left cause he had tendonitis. Noel said that allan white was the most talented musician oasis ever had
Morning Glory and Be Here Now Would´t have been so great albuns without Alan. By far the best drummer Oasis had. His drimming in gigs is awsome. Top of the world.
Yes - you can see this in the Oasis documentaries at Rockfield Studios how the kit was arranged and mic’d. Update: A guy on TH-cam who does a lot of videos surround Oasis and the Britpop movement called James Hargreaves just did a video at Rockfield named "SOUND LIKE OASIS IN THE STUDIO: Morning Glory Mic Deep Dive @ Rockfield Studios With Nick Brine" with the engineer Nick Brine who helped along with Owen Morris to record WTSMG. He listed every microphone, cable, drum kit, etc. All the information is available there.
Some drummers have the ability to make a beautiful mess, and by that I mean original and unconventional colors, textures, and rhythms that breath the essential life and urgency into a song. This guy is one of those drummers.
Thanks for uploading this, it's really excellent drumming. If you listen closely you can hear the ghost track of the bass through the headphones I presume he was wearing =)

I could always tell ALan had a lot to offer Oasis in his drumming but a lot of it fell off after Mornign Glory where I think Noel directed him to play even simpler to not get in the way of his songs. Alan was clearly a good drummer when I heard his contributions on the Morning GLory album but his playing got so much more standard just keeping a standard beat... it must have drove him nuts
@@twistedcliffster9038 As much as I loved Alan's playing, DM was where I learnt to play because Tony's drumming was perfect for that simple rock 'n' roll.

OMG I am a huge Oasis fan but always felt Wonderwall was a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong - I love the song, it was just a bit too popular. I was soooo wrong - I am ashamed that I have never appreciated the drum groove. I feel like I've wasted so many years!
The sad thing is that if Oasis ever get back together, 9/10 it'll be fucking Chris Sharrock filling in on the drums. Luckiest guy in rock. Doesn't record a single album with Oasis, but he gets to claim he was in the band and then join them on their side projects. Wasn't he Robbie Williams's drummer? How was he allowed in Oasis?

vincentmack I always said that. Best drum line I ever heard! Look at these variations! Guy came with everything in the band!
vincentmack37 and yet he made it sound so easy
And the best played instrument on this track by far as well.
You should check out some of Reni's drumming from the Stone Roses, the guy was an absolute genius.

Top drumming proper groove going on!
Underrated drummer
the variety of phrases is amazing..
He had excellent control and dynamics. Very classy. The fills are never obvious. Sometimes they sound like Motown, sometimes is John Bonham.
one of my favorite groove and huge thank you for uploading this as I could not ask for more
I want more Alan White,
Someone make a compilation vid of Alan White's best bits from the gigs and the records!?
Tony McCarroll could not have done this
Chris C completely agree. Although McCarroll had a style which really suited Definitely Maybe.
Chris C I very much doubt it. Tony wasn’t a creative drummer. He would never have thought to use hot rods instead of sticks.
Not even worth saying it because it’s so obvious
Nice post, always loved his style.
Alan White by far the best oasis drummer in my opinion, My biggest drumming inspiration and his brother of course. Alan is a very underrated drummer.
I've always loved his playing. Great groove on this one.

Alan is a great drummer - Champagne supernova live at Earls court 1995 really is something else.
Amazing version, I would say that was their best version.
King of fills he is great.
He was much more noticeable as a drummer
wonderfull! I always loved the drum part of Wonderwall, great groove
Today is gonna be the day

By now you should've somehow
Realized what you're not to do

any chance of posting same for DLBIA? Awesome drumming on that track and Champagne Supernova as well.
Oasis without Alan White is BULLSHIT
Both brothers playing the same kind of very educated style of drumming. Absolute classic and timeless. I mean it‘s quality.
Well they were classically trained so yes, they were educated.
Most underrated drummer of all time, someone had to say it. Noel did the right thing getting rid of Tony.
Never realised the variety of fills in this song and how the ending bit is in a different time signature to the rest of the song
The time signature doesn't change, it's still 4/4 :) but he moves the snare accents which changes the feeling of the rhythm
Its sounds beatiful, underrated drummer absolutly
Bravo, isolating the drums for this track is brilliant! (How'd you do it!)
Probably ripped from a Rock Band game.
@@rockstopsthetraffic It was, yep.
Hi. Can I use your track for my bass cover? It will be drum and bass only. 😀
