you dont have to but if you want to get the best out of your truck and the parts you put on it.. the good thing is you can build it one part at a time thats the fun part you will learn your truck and how everything work
I did it this way because its alot harder to take the turbo off and don't get mad because other people find different ways to do things that work also theres more to taking the turbo off then what you said you should know that turbo shop man.. Make a video and show everyone your way so that people will know the other way things are done
First off there was no destroying or damaging of any kind the truck runs great and i have talked to other Diesel techs and this was one of many ways to take the compressor wheel off.. i just did it this way..
one more thing if you looked at the two compressor wheels you would of seen that they have the same number of fins just the new one was a new design and it is an upgrade.. I do agree with you on if turbo is broke take it off but mine was not broke... Ether way you do it you still have to put a socket on the compressor wheel to remove it so if your going to damage it you can do it ether way and theres no denying that
@kingram4695 I dont know if it will damage it but it could if you dont keep it leavel with the shaft. all the info i have found use the air gun but as long as you dont go crazy with it you should be fine i did mine and have had no problems....there are other ways like take the whole turbo off but even then you have to use sockets on it anyways so do whaT MAKES YOU feel safe its your turbo. Thanks for the comment..
far as i know yes but to be on the safe side check clearances as your putting it together and then after its all done before start up...Also do so research if its good to do both ( wheel & housing ) or one or the other..
I did the something to my truck and I love it, I tow a trailer most of the time and I lust love the sound of it, by the way I got the same spool from xdp
i was thinking of doing this upgrade and i heard that if you use an air gun on the on the wheel it will damage the shaft it goes on do you know if this is true? thank you
I looked on the web site where i got the x-wheel from and they didnt have a listing for your year truck so i think the turbos are diff from my 2001 to your 97
One last thing, how is going from a 9 fin compressor wheel to a 5 an upgrade???? the old 94-95 strokes used 5s and Garrett always adds fins to get more boost?? This is only an "upgrade" if your compressor wheel is damaged. And again, if your turbo is broke, take it out and fix it properly.

Your truck already has it from the factory.

big difference in power that can be felt?
Never ever use a half inch gun to remove or especially install a compressor housing nut! I think the torque for that shaft is like 11ft pounds.

great video man I want to make my turbo louder on my 2001 7.3 it is all stock just cut off muffler that's all
The 94.5 to 99.5 powerstrokes have whicked wheels already its a late 99 to 03 thing to fix the compressor surge problem
turn up the waste gate a 1/4 turn 3 times and wicked wheel
did you notice much of a difference?
hows the truck going with the turbo so far?
You like that K&N? I have an AFE Stage 2 on my 02....talk about waking up a monster!!
do you know if that wheel will work for older 7.3's? i have a 97 F350 powerstroke.
can u use a upgraded wheel with a aftermarket turbo housing ?
what exhaust are you runnin dude?

@jordanritch alittle smoother
no i didn't like it....it was on the truck when i bought it but i took it off real fast and put the AFE stage 2 kit and yes it woke it up alot
magnaflow turbo back 4inch
Omg .. better hope you didn't put any stress cracks in your shaft from using that impact...! Rule number one, no impact on turbo shafts..!
