Alice went to Germany and met her cousin Kaiser Wilhelm II, who was twenty years her senior. She found him arrogant and pompous. She and her mother reluctantly lived in Germany for Charlie's education. They were surrounded by sycophants (usurpers). The only compliment she could give Germany is that all Germans were very stipt and all their military movements were done very beautifully. 7. Alice thinks her cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm, was very envious of Britain for its music and culture. She says that despite everything, he adored and loved his grandmother, Queen Victoria. 8. During the funeral, Alice was waiting with other family members at Windsor Station. The horses wouldn't start because of the cold. And so, the soldiers went first to save time. Alice thinks it's the origin of that tradition and that it looks beautiful. 9. She said Queen Victoria was a dear old thing, who was fun and nearly died of laughter.

She told me stories of incredible struggles, that she lived through to find some humour in, at times. Her stories were rich with wisdom and a charm that you just wish was still around.
Totally agree with you. The old are our living history, not just Royal ladies like Princess Alice. I am always surprised when some people don't know anything about their family past their parents or grandparents. Our past is what has made our present.

She told me she got sick and tired of wearing those damn corsets and high necked long dresses. She loved those pant suits in old age. She told me that when she was young she could have never worn pants back in the day. She also wore makeup as well and then she started traveling and loved television.

a beautiful child, she was the daughter of the Queen's youngest son, Prince Leopold, who was an incredibe person in his own right and died much too young of the hemophilia he had inherited from his mother. the Princess Alice was a remarkable lady, her aunt, the Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse, who died long before Alice's birth, is my favorite in royal history, also died tragically young.
I would have loved to have heard her also talk about her cousins the last Empress of Russia Alexandra and Alexandra's sister Elisabeth. Would be interesting to have known what she thought of them and how she and the rest of the family felt when both (and Alexandra's husband and children) were brutally murdered.
Princess Alice The Countess of Athlone. She was a living link to a bygone age. I could have listened to her talk for hours and hours. I remember when it was shown originally the interviewer asking if she could remember Queen Victoria saying "we are not amused" which she comments on right at the end of this clip. Perhaps it was just something someone thought she ought to have said. She does comment on her humour as well & it is well documented that the Queen had got a good sense of humour. Princess Alice must have had a wonderful life and met all sorts of famous people.

When we lose a person in their 90's and above we are losing a great deal of our own personal history. That generation lived history. Nowadays, unfortunately, the younger generation is not being taught history.

Perhaps I am an anomaly but at 19 I have spent the last three years trying to record oral histories of the old people in my life. I have an acute awareness that they will not be here forever. I have two-hour recordings of a Holocaust survivor I was able to interview, and my great-grandfather, who was born in 1916 and died in November. I’ve also conducted written interviews with a few last remaining post-Edwardians who I believe have since passed. I think there is such enormous value in history, and being young, I want to record it as I wish my grandparents had done of their own Victorian grandparents.
This is so fascinating! Thank you for uploading and sharing history and interviews from those who have lived during such changing and interesting times. One could tell she was a fun lady to be around, that twinkle in her eye.
In about 1960 I went to the theatre and before the play started the manager came on the stage and told us that Princess Alice would be attending, and when she came in they would play God Save The Queen and we should stand and remain standing until she sat down. Neither I nor the young lady I was with had any idea who Princess Alice was! Looked her up later ( no internet then!) She was a little white haired lady and looked very sweet..

He was very much in the public view until his illness became uncontrolable. He said & did whatever came to his mind & often embarrassed the family. And his seizures took a big tole on him & his family entering WWI.
Seeing this reminds me of the moment in the original film of "The Ladykillers" when Katie Johnson as "Mrs. Lopsided" recalls her birthday party ending when the death of Queen Victoria was announced.

When Princess Alice was 18, very beautiful, at her first ball and wearing a low decollete, she recalled that Queen Victoria walked up to her rather perturbed, tapped her in the front of her frock with her fan, and hissed, rather shocked, "Dear child, wear a rose! - there! (indicating the low cut front of the ballgown) - there, my dear...for the sake of the footmen!" (who would walk behind her chair to serve the princess and would have a perfect view of the royal bosom...)

In the first video shot of her in 1896, the man in the hat with the beard walking beside her carriage is czar Nicholas the 2nd of Russia, and the woman on the other side is his wife (Alexandra of Hesse and by Rhine) who was Victoria’s granddaughter.
I remember hearing a comment on tv that princess alice liked to "nip" out of kensington palace to go shopping or walkabout without realising that she was followed by a bodyguard. Such an adorable lady.

a beautiful child, she was the daughter of the Queen's youngest son, Prince Leopold, who was an incredibe person in his own right and died much too young of the hemophilia he had inherited from his mother. the Princess Alice was a remarkable lady, her aunt, the Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse, who died long before Alice's birth, is my favorite in royal history, also died tragically young.

I would have loved to have heard her also talk about her cousins the last Empress of Russia Alexandra and Alexandra's sister Elisabeth. Would be interesting to have known what she thought of them and how she and the rest of the family felt when both (and Alexandra's husband and children) were brutally murdered.

Princess Alice The Countess of Athlone. She was a living link to a bygone age. I could have listened to her talk for hours and hours. I remember when it was shown originally the interviewer asking if she could remember Queen Victoria saying "we are not amused" which she comments on right at the end of this clip. Perhaps it was just something someone thought she ought to have said. She does comment on her humour as well & it is well documented that the Queen had got a good sense of humour. Princess Alice must have had a wonderful life and met all sorts of famous people.

What a gorgeous lady she was. At the time of her death, in 1981, at the age of 97, she was the oldest surviving member of the British Royal Family of all time. She seemed like such a lovely woman - so fascinating to hear her talking about her life, and particularly about her grandmother!

When we lose a person in their 90's and above we are losing a great deal of our own personal history. That generation lived history. Nowadays, unfortunately, the younger generation is not being taught history.
It is sad to think the more society is changing the less they care to hear about the past. A good percentage of teenagers now days would rather spend all day on tik tok or xbox or facebook rather than sit and listen to old people share their stories and wisdom

I lost my mom's mom grandmother kiki at age 99 she had the same attitude as Alice does in this interview my poor grandmother kiki mom's mom only knew how to speak Greek

Perhaps I am an anomaly but at 19 I have spent the last three years trying to record oral histories of the old people in my life. I have an acute awareness that they will not be here forever. I have two-hour recordings of a Holocaust survivor I was able to interview, and my great-grandfather, who was born in 1916 and died in November. I’ve also conducted written interviews with a few last remaining post-Edwardians who I believe have since passed. I think there is such enormous value in history, and being young, I want to record it as I wish my grandparents had done of their own Victorian grandparents.

In about 1960 I went to the theatre and before the play started the manager came on the stage and told us that Princess Alice would be attending, and when she came in they would play God Save The Queen and we should stand and remain standing until she sat down. Neither I nor the young lady I was with had any idea who Princess Alice was! Looked her up later ( no internet then!) She was a little white haired lady and looked very sweet..

I did indirectly hear something about a 'royals' travels when I was a child. Someone our family knew that was traveling through England sometime in the early 1900's claimed to have 'spotted' mention of, someone in the royal family who took infrequent "anonymous trips to an island Commonwealth". We never knew which royal it was.

He was very much in the public view until his illness became uncontrolable. He said & did whatever came to his mind & often embarrassed the family. And his seizures took a big tole on him & his family entering WWI.

When Princess Alice was 18, very beautiful, at her first ball and wearing a low decollete, she recalled that Queen Victoria walked up to her rather perturbed, tapped her in the front of her frock with her fan, and hissed, rather shocked, "Dear child, wear a rose! - there! (indicating the low cut front of the ballgown) - there, my dear...for the sake of the footmen!" (who would walk behind her chair to serve the princess and would have a perfect view of the royal bosom...)

Interesting to see the Original facade to Buckingham Palace; the one we know today is the result of a remodelling put in hand by Edward VII, the original facade was criticised as 'shop architecture'.

In the first video shot of her in 1896, the man in the hat with the beard walking beside her carriage is czar Nicholas the 2nd of Russia, and the woman on the other side is his wife (Alexandra of Hesse and by Rhine) who was Victoria’s granddaughter.
I remember hearing a comment on tv that princess alice liked to "nip" out of kensington palace to go shopping or walkabout without realising that she was followed by a bodyguard. Such an adorable lady.

I imagine Queen Mary also had a lot of similiar memories of Queen Victoria, that were only shared in private with HM Queen Elizabeth II. And we'll never know what was said.
