She was also closely related to the Dutch Royal House of Orange Nassau. Her mother Princess Helena was a sister of Queen Emma. So Queen Wilhelmina was her first cousin. She visited her Dutch relatives often.

As a South African, I can confirm that Princess Alice was the only member of the Royal family who could speak Afrikaans.
You see, she was the wife of the Earl of Athlone. He was the Governor General of South Africa. This made her the First Lady of South Africa.

25 years ago I stayed at her former home Brantridge Park. We were lucky enough to to be given what had been their personal suite in the house. After that it became a top of the line equestrian facility. It is once again a hotel now.

Princess Alice came to my school when I was about ten. First Royal I had ever seen, Just an ordinary old lady with a posh accent who spoke to the only white child in my class. Still those were the days when we still used words like Native and Empire.

Great piece of work, good voiceover.
    However, It wasn’t
    Queen Wilhelmina
who went to Canada during WWII. That was her daughter, Juliana the Princess of Orange-Nassau and two daughters Beatrix and Irene.
Queen Wilhelmina worked closely together with the Dutch resistance from her Chester Sq residence in London. Together with her son-in-law Prince Bernhard of Lippe Biesterfeld.
A third daughter was born in Canada during the war, Margriet.
Fact-sheet Queen Wilhelmina was the first self made female Millionaire in the world. She abdicated 1947 in favour of her Daughter who’d now returned to the Netherlands.

It was so sad what happened to her brother. Because of her grandmother - Charles Edward became a Nazi.

Yup. Hitler's fave Prince. He was high up there chain of command and completely aware of the horrors of the Third Reich. He knew about the euthanized of a school/home for mentally and physically disabled children. 300 something children. He knew about it. Because it was in his Duchy (even tho he was no longer a Ruler of Said Duchy) Instead of being invited to his niece's Coronation in 1952
He had to watch it in a Cinema, and died penniless and alone.
