      I met an old soldier on my last trip to England, and he said she had the most amazing eyes. I thought he was talking about Diana, but he corrected me. Apparently Princess Margaret’s eye color rivaled that of Elizabeth Taylor’s.

      Not all dead. Some who were children or teenagers at the time will be in their late 80s or 90s. The Queen herself famously went out in that crowd and she only died recently!

      That’s just how that generation spoke, and that applies to every language. People used to have a much larger vocabulary than the current generations. Whenever I’m with my grandmother I’m reminded of words that have fallen into disuse, like the word “disuse” lol I’m Portuguese and we have the same word, spelled “desuso”. Having said that though, vicarious is not exactly the fanciest word; there’s that expression “to live vicariously through someone”. Anyone that is not a simpleton knows that saying and can determine the meaning of the word “vicarious” through the adverb and its context in that saying. I’m not even a native English speaker and I know it, so it’s hardly upper English.

    • @wrathford
      @wrathford 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@heucatia Hi, native English speaker here (also with degrees in English). I grew up in the UK and have mingled across different social groups all my life due to how I was raised. 'Vicarious' isn't a word that is normally used by everyday working class lay people - unfortunately there are a lot more 'simpletons' in the anglophone world than you think! Especially these days when more people prefer to pick up a phone than to read a book.

Even before the queen got the throne, I can tell the difference. They were beautiful, especially when they were young! And had class, I guess they should have. They were royalty. I do hear her voice sounding similar to the Queen's on this interview. But I can still tell the difference!

    Margaret had a lovely warmth and sparkle about her. You can really sense that the "grooming" invested into her was much lower than would have been for Elizabeth, being the heiress. Princess Margaret got a raw deal from the press. Labelled a rebel and a party fiend. It always appeared to me, the partying was a substitute for her loneliness. Had she been able to marry Townsend. Who knows what might have happened. He was there when her sister married and her father died. He was that stability. So sad that she died relatively young

      For someone who report ably smoked 60 Cigis a day and was a heavy daily drinker for decades making it to your early 70’s is really not that young. Comparably so to her sister and mother a bit younger but understandably so having lived a much harder life.

    Margaret wasn't just beautiful. She was intelligent, modernized and capable. A wonderful pianist, sensitive and caring mother. Always loyal to her sister and to the crown no matter what. Unfortunately she was bullied hard by the press, misunderstood and misrepresented.

    I thought aww it’s princess Margaret, then when she spoke I thought oh wait no it’s The Queen. They sound exactly the same. They are both together now. 😢

      It's fascinating to me that so many people think Margaret Rose and Elizabeth spoke identically. To my ear they sound completely dissimilar from one another.

      @@jasonhurd4379 it’s just the intonation and Margaret is a bit heavier and deeply settled, the queen was more crispy and sharper
