Because I watch your program, I am still learning. I thought I knew more than I do. That is the nice part of your videos. It is also good to see my good buddy. I hope that you. Are learning where you are and having a good time. I look forward to your return. Thank you as always.
Good information Brett, bit surprised the PLB doesn’t figure more highly. My daily paddle in semi open ocean I have very minimal gear but I do have a mobile phone and PLB. If I have a heart attack or other medical episode those two things really are only things that will save me I think. Most other issues can be solved ok without a lot of stuff. Depends on your type of paddling, risk minimisation blah blah, but that ability to raise the alarm in worst circumstances seems to me to be no 1
In “semi-open ocean” that makes sense. Most people aren’t paddling like that (I have one when I am paddling at the coast or if I am solo for more than a few hours) also keep in mind we live in a world where people don’t wear PFD’s! (Which drives me crazy) sot he thought of spending $350 on something they will always carry and never use is a hard sell.. But I agree with you.
I have been watching your videos now that I did a crazy thing that includes kayaking a lot of miles on the Missouri River! I am loving your videos! The presentation, real life, how you teach things, and your top 10 list plus the couple bonus items...priceless! Along with the suggestions in the comments. Thank you!
Hi and thanks for sharing. Thank you for the A and B lists. For this moment, I will go after list A of 10 essentials. As always, very informative and helpful. Well done.🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶
This idea that caloric deficit can lead to errors in judgment and decision-making deserves its own episode. If you have real stories (you've actually seen for yourself), I'd like to hear them. Would like to learn more about it. Likely a very overlooked safety topic.
I have a few from people I have worked with, but am probably not comfortable sharing them. Let me look into it, maybe I can make something happen. It would be a good video though.
Pretty thorough list. I have light skin so I've pretty much given up on sunscreen and moved to completely covering with UV fabric including full face cover hats. It's a little hotter but at least I don't have to slather myself with sunscreen and have to remember to reapply it all the time. UV levels have been insane here lately. A decent waterproof power bank is also a good addition with everything including radios becoming USB rechargeable.
Yeah, I have a good power bank that is water resistant, but my VHF isn’t USB rechargeable… another reason it should be upgraded. Thanks for stopping by.
More 'B-level' items to consider - bug repellent; helmet (for rocky shores); raincoat/paddle jacket that can be put on over the pfd (and everything else) while on the water when a storm or conditions kick up. The trash bag could be used for this but may be undesirably baggy/noisy in windy conditions and won't protect one's arms.
This video is so on point, I will probably watch multiple times. Thank you for sharing. Did I miss a link to your list? The A/B categories are just fantastic and I’ve been thinking about this for the last couple of weeks as my kayaking club is gearing up for a multi day trip down the Current river. Thanks again. Time to search your blog and rewatch. See ya on the water…
I don’t have an actual list, but if you head over to my blog you can see it there - I did make some changes. www.paddlingotaku.com/2012/02/10-essentials-for-sea-kayaking.html?q=Ten+essentials
