  • Our March Kayak trip around the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, North East England in great conditions requiring active kayaking skills.
A tiny weather window in the eye of a Low Pressure area over the UK required an early start to ensure we were off the sea before the forecasted strong winds and heavy rain hit our coast.

@@seangrimmer7925 Hi Sean and thanks for your comments 😊 😂😂
The Farnes is a little bit of nature just off our local coastline with loads of beautiful wildlife and scenery, interesting and playful tide races which, as always, subject to opposing wind and swell conditions...so a great place to have some fun!!
It's never the same each visit, so again, always a great kayaking trip whether male or female 🤔😂😂

Goodness me Geoff, I got sea sick just watching it😮. “Active conditions”, I think my description would be a little more colourful than that. Clearly I am a million miles away from being a competent sea kayaker and as my old school teacher used to say, “must try harder”. Great video and thanks for sharing. 👌

Ha, ha, so pleased you enjoyed this one! Thanks Alex. They were great conditions requiring active paddling but I never forget the sea is the master and no matter how cocky we all get, it will slap us down just as a reminder 🥺😯🙄 ....respect!!
This last video gave me an idea on an 'Active Paddling' compilation video. So I'm currently pulling together a few clips from several St Abbs trips, highlighting plenty of juicy bits...I think you'll enjoy it once it's done 😂😂👍

Sorry, I forgot to answer, over the past several years I've been using the GoPro Hero 10 black attached to a mouth mount in my teeth but also flown many DJI drones over the years so for the past year I've been using the DJI Action 4 which I feel has the edge on GoPro's H 10 in quite a number of ways inc wider standard field of view with Horizon Balancing....still with the mouth mount and excellent for my application. Hope this helps...any questions you may have, please ask 👍

Another great video, Geoff. That looked a lot of fun. One thing I found when things got sloppy was my very tippy kayak, with a very round profile to the hull, was just so stable allowing the swell and chop to just pass by even from the side.
I would probably have taken a bit of a detour to the northwest to visit my grandparents home town of Carnoustie, and maybe a side trip for an 'Arboath Smokie'. My parents loved the smokies when they visited. Would be about a conservative 20 hour paddle there which would be doable.

Thanks Gadget, yes a great day and a lovely interesting location which always produces brilliant conditions 😀
I find staying loose at the waist helps the boat moves around underneath with conditions while the body remains upright.
Sounds like a bit of a trek that one requiring settled conditions 🤔 😀
I've got friends in Dundee they paddle Arbroath fairly often, apparently loads of great deep sea caves in the area 👍

@@geoffburke And I can understand the loss of a hat. I lost mine, from the mid 90's, last year while out in the yak. Well I fell out of the yak on launch, with my newest to me yak which has very little rocker and wasn't suitable for launching from a steep ramp. Yes it was mid winter and I was in my 'uniform' of singlet and shorts with my trusty cap.

@@geoffburke Got out fairly quickly and moved to a better location for a paddle. Paddling soon warmed me up. My clothing is so thin it doesn't hold water. We're on the east coast of the mainland (South Island) and the current brings cold water up from the south, where you are on the tail of the Gulf Stream bringing warm water also from the south. This, along with the fact that during our summer/your winter the earth is closer to the sun and during our winter/your summer the earth is further from the sun, we have fairly similar climates despite us being so much closer to the equator than you.
I'm used to the water. My mother was a surf life saver way back in the day (~40's?) but wasn't allowed to rescue people because she was a she, despite her being an exceptionally strong swimmer. She took on the men's races and won. She had us swimming 200m at 5 years old.
