Hi there ! Thank you so much for sharing these videos.. I find my memory & speech sometimes are hard for me to piece together.. I haven’t had an injury to the head or stroke.. I sure hope it’s not something serious, but I feel like I need to get diagnosed. I want to become an affluent speaker & be able to recall things without having to write them down, is that possible? I believe what I have is mild/moderate, but it makes me feel a bit flushed when I have to communicate.
@@nerat123 right ! Like it’s really annoying when people are speaking so eloquently, but you somehow can’t grasp everything they’re saying and can’t add to their conversation (if it’s too complex)
@@tima1443 Utah is gorgeous. I would love to go riding there. May I recommend a book for you to read regarding our deficiencies?XD It should help tons. Im actually getting back into it now after having relapsed into my old bad habits.
I’m 56 years old and like many others, have encountered blows to the head at various points in the their lives. My memory has been questionable at times, so what would be my recourse to establish what may be causing this?
Well usually I have a general long term goal for a client and several short term goals reflecting my expectation for the client. Each short term goal represents hopefully about a week's progress. If someone reaches a short term goal, we will "upgrade" it to make it more challenging. Or, we will decide to work on something else. Basically, I take data during every session and keep track that way. A short term goal could look like "Pt will demonstrate 90% accuracy recalling 5 new items with 5 minute delay when given 25% verbal and visual cueing. " Does that make sense? Thanks for the question.
Eugene Speech-Language Therapy LLC Thanks so much for replying. I'm a new grad and you are the type of clinician I aspire to be. What would be the long term goal for that short term goal you mentioned? You said that each of your short term goals last ~a week (dependent on the clients performance), so as each short term goal is reached, this indicates the client is closer to reaching the long term overarching goal...am I understanding you correctly? Do you use the data from the short term goals to justify changing long term goals or do you get the client to perform one task that best represents reaching the long term goal? Thanks again.
Hello, The long term goal for the example I gave you will vary depending on the client. As I mentioned, my LT goals are broad, indicating an overarching expectation for my client. For instance, it could be a goal for being more independent in the home or recalling functional information using strategies with a certain percentage. Yes, as each ST goal is reached, they are closer to the LT goal. If I ever change a LT goal, which is very rare, it will change based on the ST goals. I do change ST goals, however, in case the expectations were too high. I am not sure if I understand your question, but I hope that helps.

Thank you for this video! What standardized memory assessments do you recommend?
Hello Lizzy,
I mostly use assessments that have memory subtests like the RIPA and SCATBI, however, the Rivermead is good, as well as RBANS.

My young son had a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The only thing he is still struggling with is memory. How can I help him?
did you learn this in school?

Do you have any recommendations for memorizing routes (other than method of loci)?
Thanks for your videos! They're extremely helpful. When you set speech goals for a patient, when do you move on to new goals or more difficult goals?
