  • How to DOCK START a SURF FOIL / HYDROFOIL using the BEST TECHNIQUE I have tried! I talk through the best method I have used to DOCK START a foil and break down the technique into 5 steps. A range of videos in slow motion and in real time have also been used to help highlight this technique.
    In my time dock starting, I have used a few different techniques, however this is definitely the most reliable method which has helped me to land on the board with my feet in the correct position. Hopefully, this will help out with the learning process and encourage other people to get into this epic area of foiling!
    This method has worked amazingly in the flat water as well as the surf and has launched me into mini shore runners.
    My set up details:
    Axis PNG 910/1150
    Axis Short Fuse
    380 Rear Stab
    75cm (19mm mast)
    I am 5’9 and weigh 75kg.

    Hey man. Just called in to say thanks for your validation of this technique. I was using this technique but with a long run up. I had doubts after one of my sessions where I felt no progress was being made and most vids I'd watched up until that point had the 'throw and jump' or 'push and jump' method. After coming across your vid it reaffirmed that yes, I was doing it different but not necessarily wrong. I'm at your 2 step launch now (down from 10 steps) and loving dock starting life. Thanks heaps.

    One nice thing with this technique is that it keeps you in a compact position and keeps your hands in front of you. My biggest problem has been having my arms all over the place once I land on the board. My best efforts have been when I can land in a "Super G" tuck position on the board, then initiate the pump from a predictable position.
    I may have to do some yoga to get that leap/replace move. I feel my outcome will be hooking my toes on the rail and failing spectacularly.

    I was doing something similar but not the pushing down of the board.Most of my fails are controlled dives into the drink,this might help a lot.
    BTW i made a contraption very similar to yours , will put it to use because the docks here are a bit high.
    Thx!.

    Thanks for all the brilliant & inspiring videos! So great to follow your journey. I'm just starting out & wondering what you'd recommend as a first foil for dock starts (& hopefully in the future light winging & riding tiny swell). I'm looking at the png 1150, 1300, 1310 or the art pro 1401. I'm 83kg, 47yrs old and not super fit. Any guidance would be massively appreciated. Thanks again for the awesome videos and inspiration!

      Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it 👍 and great that you are looking to get into the dock starts! I've only been on the 1150 PNG which is an awesome wing. It is easy to use and has a really low stall speed which is great for dock starts. Although I've not tried the other wings, the 1310 is the bigger version of the 1150 so it should in theory have an even lower stall speed. I know through friends that the 1300 and 1401 are higher aspect compared to the 1150 and 1310. They are also meant to be great wings but they would probably be tricky to start off with if you are learning. I hope this helps and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions!

    Do you have plans for this portable dock ?

  • @sweshunbeats
    @sweshunbeats 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    How do you keep the foil from hitting the front corner leg of your platform ? It looks like you’ve angled your board away slightly from the dock so I guess you’re jumping forwards and slightly to the right as you take off ? I’m using the Sabfoil Leviathan 1350 which is super wide and I’m pretty short (5’6) so not sure my geometry works for this kind of platform 😂 . Do you think there’s a theoretical foil width limit for a given person’s arm span ?

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I am very sorry for the delay. Thanks for the comment on this and have you managed to give a similar platform a try? Yes so that's exactly right, on take off I slightly angle the board out so that it does not hit the end/leg of the ladder. In the video I was on the Axis 1150 PNG (wingspan of 1150mm) but I have used the SPG glide 220 which has a wingspan of around 1200mm. The glide 220 works fine but I find I have to angle the board away even more to stop it hitting which would be the case with your Leviathan 1350. Sorry I am not sure about a foil width limit but a more I think a slightly more explosive take off would be needed with a wider span foil to compensate for the extra angle the board it from the platform. I hope this helps and just let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks

    Awesome video , Do you think I could use a non high aspect foil , naish jet foil 2000

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. Yes absolutely, low aspect foils will be great to start on. That's how I learnt and then I moved to high aspect foils when I got the hang of it. Low aspect foils will be easier to learn with as well, as they won't require as much speed on take off to get the foil active. I hope this helps!

    Would a phantasm 926ptm foil and short fuse
    Work with a 78kg rider or is that foil to small ?

    • @iandavidv
      @iandavidv  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delay and thanks for the message. Although I've not used that foil, it should work. The only thing is it could be difficult to learn with. I would advise if you are learning then try to use a big foil as it will help with the take off as you will require less speed to activate it but a bigger foil will also give you more time from take off before starting your pump. I was using the Axis PNG1150 for a long time while learning which had an area of over 1700cm. I hope this helps 👍

    Have been trying this technique with the ladder dock start for dozens of times now, and I see little progress but nowhere near the goal... How many tries did it take you to do that first long run (eg 3+ pumps)? I feel my equipment is not optimal so it might even be possib for me. I'm using a 5'8" Gong lance board with 65cm ALU mast and a big 2100cm front wing. The whole package is quite heavy when I try to run up on the ladder and harder to keep a proper technique. The long board also doesn't help as it hits the water faster when dipping and the shorter mast doesn't help either. Do you think I should keep trying or do I need equipment more similar to yours?
    Thanks a lot in advance

      Thanks for your message and it's great to hear you are getting into the dock starts!
      Dock starting, really takes time and patience. I have another video coming out very soon on my progression over 6months when I first started which will hopefully give you an idea on how long it took me. To actually dock start it took me about 6 tough sessions with loads of falls before I could pump around to a basic level. However, when I tried this new technique it still took me about 2 more whole sessions before I really got to grips with it. It's annoying but it really does take time.
      You are definitely more than able to do it and succeed, however your board is the main issue which will make it very difficult. Your foil will be fine and the mast length will work well (I used to have a 65cm and it worked great) but the Gong Lance is a big board with lots of volume and therefore quite heavy. I use my old Gong kitefoil board which is 4'6" and 29L. It's not to say you can't do it on your board but it will make it challenging. A smaller and light board will make it far easier to initially get onto foil from the dock/ladder take off but it will also make the pumping easier.
      Thanks again for your message and I hope this helps. Feel free to add me on Instagram if you have any other questions and I'm more than happy to help 🤙👍

      @@iandavidv thanks a lot for you helpful reply, it will definitely help me progress further! I actually had one more session since my comment and made some tangible progress - was able to put in 1-2 good pumps! Your tip about pressing down on the board helped a lot.
      It's good to know that at least the foil will be good enough, I may acquire a small board just for dock start and use the gong lance for waves as intended (I have not been lucky on our Black sea coast yet).
      I dont have Instagram but if you have an email, we can keep in touch.
      Thanks again!

      Thanks for your message. I usually use the Axis PNG 1150 which has an actual area of 1778cm. But sometimes I dock start off the PNG 910 (actual area of 1267cm). The 1150 is way more efficient and easier for longer distances/durations.

      Thanks for your question 👍 I made another video on the ladder which is used as a portable dock. If you get a chance take a look at it and hopefully it helps. Here is the link for it: th-cam.com/video/eT1HxwnPP5g/w-d-xo.html
      The dimensions of the combination ladder when used as a platform are as follows:
      Width 36cm
      Length 179cm (platform and boards)
      Height 95cm
      I use the Axis Mast which is 75cm high, this works the best for the platform I find.
      Just let me know if you have any other questions 👍🤙
